While I was there I decided to order some CDs I have been looking for for the longest. The group called IF. They were an obscure British Jazz-Rock band I used to listen to back in the early and mid '70's. I am attempting to collect all their releases as they become available. They are hard to get here in the US. I was quite suprise to see it on GMN roster. It is listed as an import. Anyone knows of another Import outfit I can buy British releases? electrix >Hi Everyone > >At risk of exposing my lack of Dolby knowledge, does anyone want to read my >Flat Earth Review at http://www.gmn.com/shop/buyallmusic.asp (click the Read >GMN Review link) and see how much I got wrong?? A short dropout is annoying but bearable. It does get in the way of enjoying the music though. There are a lot of short dropouts right at the start of Europa, whereas other tracks make it all the way through without much disturbance - Jungle line springs to mind. Then there is New Toy (which I've finally got "in to" at last) which suffers from dullness on the left for at least 10 seconds or more. I'm not sure it's the fault of my particular video cassette - I don't think the FM carrier system used for HiFi VHS sound could ever give that effect. Then again I'm quite happy to be proved wrong if it means I've learnt something. So Craig, I'd be most grateful to find out whether the LD version is super-duper quality all through each track, or similarly afflicted. Thanks! If I don't write again before the date (or anyone is going away from a 'net connection for a vacation), may I wish you all an enjoyable Christmas... and I hope 2000 is a good year for us all! Hmmmmm....before there was Thomas Dolby there was Jan Hammer "The First Seven Days." How quaint that they would both do a project under Miramar. Whoever made the Mind's Eye series possible certainly had a tasteful and future vision. (Ooops, There I go again, finding the patterns in my selective taste!) Can anyone tell the story of how Gate's to the Mind's Eye came about? For those of you who don't celebrate Christmas, please forgive the religious overtones, and have yourself a wonderful holiday season! The Northern Star was a compass light In a land afar, on a silent night To a manger still, but for new life Born of a shepherd's virgin wife. He came with promise, filled with love, And gave that we might rise above. So through His name, I pray for you A blessed Christmas, and New Year, too! Much love to all this holiday season. Also, in light of my usual casual writing style, please forgive the serious overtones of this missive, I'll be returning to bedlam in just a few moments. One other note, a special prayer for Mary Brown. My thoughts and wishes are with you and yours. And now, one of my own! First and foremost, my deepest thanks to *everyone* on the list for contributing so much of yourselves to this group. From those most talkative members to those who mostly 'lurk', you are all integral to the amazingly diverse, vibrant and endlessly fascinating community of Alloy. I'd like to sincerely thank each and every one of you for making Alloy (quite possibly) the most unique list on the web... a refuge for intelligent, energetic dialogue on just about every subject under the sun, particularly, the work of the very brilliant Mr Thomas Dolby Robertson. All of you have made Alloy a success and a joy for me to manage. For your kindness, support, and dedication over this past year, through thick and thin, I'll always be grateful to you! A special thanks to Mr Robertson himself for being so consistently generous to his fans! For years he has taken on the very active roles of either CEO or Chief Beatnik of his own fast-growing company Beatnik, Incorporated, and of working as a vital artist who develops his own projects as time allows, all the while remaining a beautifully devoted husband and father; yet he still takes the time and care to communicate with his fans whenever possible. I'm sure I speak for everyone at Alloy when I express my deepest thanks to Thomas for being so sweet to us! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season.
