(Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the immediate availability of the Java(TM) Media Framework 2.0 Application Programming Interface (API) specification and reference implementation. Developed by Sun and IBM, Java Media Framework 2.0 (JMF) technology is the unified architecture for the playback, synchronization, capture, and transmission and transcode of media -- including streaming audio and video -- across most major operating systems. An API is the interface through which a software program accesses an operating system, and is an essential layer for ensuring code portability. To better help developers to effectively evaluate new and upgraded technologies, Sun provides reference implementations of all core technologies and optional packages as a guideline for implementation and testing. The JMF 2.0 API extends the Java platform by offering advanced media processing capabilities, including media capture, compression, and transmission and support for important media types and codecs like MP3, Flash, Real-time Transport Protocol and Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTP/RTSP), IBM's HotMedia, and Beatnik's Rich Media Format (RMF). JMF 2.0 technology also supports popular media types such as QuickTime, Microsoft's AVI format, and MPEG-1. In addition, the JMF 2.0 API includes an open media architecture that allows developers to access and manipulate various components of the media playback and capture process, such as effects, tracks, and renders, or to utilize their own custom plug-in components. The JMF 2.0 API was developed jointly between Sun and IBM. "With the release of JMF 2.0 technology, enterprises are now able to take full advantage of the Java platform's portability when designing media-rich enterprise applications, such as remote sales training or customer service applications that can include both streaming audio and video components," said Jon Kannegaard, general manager and vice president, Software Products and Platforms, Sun Microsystems. "JMF 2.0 provides a comprehensive set of capabilities for developers of Java-based enterprise applications using rich media," said Bill Pence, Director of Media Content Solutions, IBM. "Support for HotMedia will allow developers to create e-business applications for the Web and for the enterprise, like education and training." "The release of Java Media Framework 2.0 will enable the Beatnik RMF developer community to build interactive audio applications that are compatible with a graphically rich, high-performance media solution that can run on any Java platform-enabled environment," said Beatnik founder Thomas Dolby Robertson. "We look forward to taking advantage of JMF 2.0's support for RMF along with Flash, MP3, and other popular technologies. Our customer base is growing exponentially, and we anticipate that JMF 2.0 will expand this base. We're quite pleased that the Java industry can deliver such a flexible technology to suit this growing community." About Java Media Framework 2.0 Technology JMF 2.0 technology can be used for both Java applications and applets and will run in Java-enabled browsers such as Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. JMF 2.0 can be pre-installed on the client system or dynamically downloaded for use in Java applets and applications, giving developers the ability to create unique media solutions to match their particular needs. Client-side use of Java, including both applications and applets, makes up a critical part of enterprise intranet and business-to-business applications, where complex functionality on the client can greatly enhance the user's experience. JMF 2.0 technology will ship in four different versions that are tailored to meet developers' needs. In addition to the standard JMF 2.0 option, developers can choose among optimized powerpacks for the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment, Windows, and Web servers. JMF 2.0 is part of the Java Media family, which also includes the Java 3D(TM), Java 2D(TM), Java Sound and Java Advanced Imaging APIs. With the Java Media APIs, software developers can quickly and easily add media-rich features, such as streaming video, 3D graphics and imaging processing, to their Internet ready applications and applets. By leveraging the inherent strengths of the Java platform, the Java Media APIs extend the "Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM)" capabilities to graphics, imaging and digital media applications, thereby dramatically reducing development time and costs. JMF 2.0 will be highlighted at the upcoming Java Business(SM) conference in New York City, December 7-9, (www.javabusinessconference.com) in Sun's booth, # 612. The demos will showcase the robust functionality of JMF 2.0 and the Java Sound API by demonstrating the JMF client with video-on-demand streaming from a Entera ELSA RTSP/RTP server serving from QuickTime files, JMF functionality with a pure Java browser and the Java Sound playback functionality and MIDI support. JMF 2.0 technology is available as an optional package to the Java 2 platform. Hey, I'm still waiting for Our Fearless Leader to announce that smoky little club date somewhere - that would take care of my Alloy holiday wish list right there! I'm quite new to this mailing group, so I don't really know what discussions have gone on in the past. But I was wondering - have you already hashed over the band "Mulu?" They took their name from the Thomas Dolby song "Mulu the Rainforest", so it seems like a worthy topic for this group (they're pretty good too, as it happens). Just curious what people think of them. I've always wanted to do a calendar featuring Alloy members, but I never thought anyone would be too interested in participating. But just think... "The Men and Women of Alloy 2001 Calendar" could become a trend setter for other mailing lists! Of course, the calendar would have all of our birthdays on it, etc... it could be REALLY COOL. Think about it! :) I've just gotten home from my second job, a holiday retail position in a bookstore where I have to advise parents about Pokemon & try to convince our customers to join our Preferred Reader program for additional discounts (it's really the best deal of any bookstore anywhere... but when I try to promote it to the customer I get stage-fright & can't remember all the benefits!) These days I'm surrounded by books everywhere I go it seems, not violins and cellos anymore.. it's weird, but I do enjoy it.
