Thanks for the update on Joe Jackson.! It brought back memories of seeing Joe perform with his bass player and drummer in a small club in Seattle. It was an amazing show and I was leaning on the edge of the stage, mesmerized by his presence and originality the entire night. He was a favorite of mine from the first album. Fortunately in Seattle, where I grew up and was still living at the time, there was a great "new music" station (KZAM.. yes it was only AM at first) in the early 80s that played all the cool new songs coming out.. Jackson, The Police, Nik Kershaw, even The Knack at the time seemed more fun than the dinosaur corporate sounds of Foreigner and Styx. It was a great time musically in the city.. there was a minor revolution in the local scene that mimicked what was happening on the larger scale. I was so pleased with the new musical trends.. since my bands had always played the 60s pop (Beatles, Stones, Who, etc..) and mixed it in with the "new" music while starting to write and play original stuff as well. We were relegated to the out of town gigs because the main Seattle venues were all being filled with bands playing songs by Kansas and Heart.. (Local band made good) Finally.. the Seattle scene started to open up.. and we began opening for those heavier bands, mixing our own music with classic pop tunes and bringing in some new tunes as well from U2, Echo and the Bunnymen, Devo and the like. Eventually.. all those dinosaur guys cut their long hair off.. and before long they were reorganizing into bands that were opening for us. There was also a small explosion of small clubs that opened up in an area of downtown Seattle called Pioneer Square. Previously home to jazz and blues bands.. these club promoters picked up on the change of scene.. and suddenly Seattle had a vibrant collage of music every night in a dozen clubs within walking distance. It was a wonderful time.. (This was well before the grunge scene took over) I could go on and on... (obviously I have already rambled some here) but I just feel quite fortunate to have been playing music during that time period. It was a fleeting moment of musical renewal.. and I'm pleased to have been a minor part of it. I'm not really one to dwell on the past with misty eyes.. but it sure was fun! Too bad Joe can't make it to Miami this trip.. I'm here until the end of the year or just after.. at which time I'm hoping to get back to LA. Ciao for now..
