Man what a job that was, year's worth of Dr. Pepper bottles that were tossed under a shelf unit behind my desk (out of sight, out of mind) are going to be in the Blue Box this week. Found all sorts of neat things that I'd forgotten I lost (Neato! My Dungeons and Dragons dice!). I can finally get at my music gear. I can finally get at my Atari games. I can finally see what colour the floor really is. Of course I don't know how long it will be until the geekroom once again falls into a state of advanced chaos. It's nice to have all this clear open space again. Got the creative juices flowing last night and I composed a wee two minute song for my friends on the pokemon hentai newsgroup (a place were hentaisha meet to twist Pokemon into something strange and perverted. Hey, you can never have too many pictures of Pikachu being buggered by Charizard). Anyone got any tips on compressing audiofiles really, really small? My two minute song started out as a 16-bit 44.1Khz mono .WAV at about 8.6meg. I then converted it to an 8-bit .WAV and this halved it's size to 4.3meg. I was then able to further reduce the file as an MP3 at 64Kps to about 800K which is pretty much the magic number for what I'm able to attach to my E-mail. The reduced and compressed file doesn't sound that bad really, heck it's coming off an analogue source anyways. I'd be interested to know how to reduce these puppies even further without too much of a loss of sound quality (I suppose the only card I have left now is to play with the sample frequency. No doubt there's a bit of room left to drop it without hurting the sound too much). For those out there that were wondering about the song content. It was just a short collection of pokemon sexual euphamisms titled "I Wanna Slowpoke Your Cloyster". Yeah, don't look for any deep meanings here. But on a side note, it was really fun to try and write an interesting song that's less than 2 minutes in length. It was almost like a composition exercise. I think I'm going to practice short song writing some more. And speaking of short songs... did anyone catch the B-52s on last week's Simpsons? I nearly wet myself laughing and thought "I gotta check the credits to see if that's really the B-52s". Yepper, sure was. And if anyone here would like to hear my perverted Pokemon song (you just know N-sync is never going to do THIS one on Pikachu's Jukebox) and your system can handle a 800K email, drop me a line and I'll send it too you. Just keep in mind that it's no masterpiece, just a light bit of fun. I wish someone will inventive a audio compression apps. Although I understand the mp3 dudes are working on mp3 compression...vaporware talk of course. When you find out let us know. Perhaps someone might be interested in donating an FTP upload/download space for ambitious musicians in our lot to post mp3 or artistic materials to share... any takers? I would.. but I am still not ready for prime time.... electrix ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 21:44:29 -0800 From: "electrix" Subject: Alloy: 12X12 Original Remixes:Thomas Dolby Aaahhhh!!!!(sigh) As I am sitting here typing away I am listening to my long awaited copy of the 12" Remixes of TDR's hits. I long ago trashed my LP turntable unable to play my vinyls. The graciousness of EMI to release it as an Import nonetheless in my libido little hands. I was in the record store lookin' for Bjork imports (I have been rather obsessed by her music lately) and as happenstance I ran right smack the D section to find this long awaited jewel! So I opted for the expensive 12" TDR disc instead. My fave "One of Our Submarine" just took me back to the days of wine and roses with my lover. I must have wore her down playing that 12" release when I bought it... here it plays back in full spectrum glory taking me down memory lane. An extra track I never heard before "Get Out of Mix" jamming to the well known "White Funk" trademark of TDR has me boppin' and rockin'. Similarly, some other ditties I never heard befo', like "Dissidents: The Search For Truth (Part 1)" 7 minutes 17 seconds of eargasm. Hell, it leaves me wanting to hear Part 2! The CD is worth every penny... (electrix kicking back grinning). electrix ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V4 #303 ***************************
