I read the Illuminati (?) trilogy many years ago. That's why, I guess, fnord seemed somewhat familiarly beguiling. Jon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 10:46:21 +0300 From: jonathan.chiddick@nokia.com Subject: Alloy: where to start? Morning all, I'm glad to see that slightly cryptic question was received in the desired fashion. It would have been really embarrassing if anyone had thought that I was interested in the other kind of 2-dimensional topography wouldn't it. ;-> > So, Jon - Tell us about yourself, your first Dolby > experience, favorite... > What questions you have - you must have questions right?... > > Robin will be in shortly with a comfy chair for you next to > the fireplace. Well considering I am in Finland and we had our first frozen morning of the year in Helsinki today that sounds very inviting. It all started when I saw 'She blinded me with science' on TV when I was about 14. I was instantly intrigued and subconsciously hooked. I went out and bought everything that I could get my hands on - or afford - and I'm still doing it. I bought my first CD player when I was about 16 and was so (naively) committed to the new format that I took my quite extensive record collection to a local second hand record shop and sold the lot to start replacing them with CD's. That was around the time that I was still convinced that the earth was a globe... It was a bad day in my life. I got very little for them really. All those beloved 7" and 12" singles are fetching good money these days and I miss them... quite apart from the fact that a lot of them are not and never will be available on CD. TMDR played a gig at the University of East Anglia in '83 (that's in Norwich (UK) where I grew up) and unfortunately I missed it as I was on holiday in Canada at the time. I have never really got over that. It was one of those once in a lifetime experiences that once missed are gone forever. Let's face facts. Thomas has said several times that touring is not something he is interested in doing now and so I don't expect that I will ever get the chance to experience something like 'I scare myself' or 'Hot sauce' in a live environment - and that is a great shame. I would drop everything and go anywhere if that chance ever came up again. Anywhere. Anyway, I have now decided that in respect of antiquated notions I am going to collect every release on every format that he has ever pleased us with. That's 28 versions of TGAOW alone if you include the 8-track which I think I might pass on...) only 27 to go... maybe I'll skip the cassettes as well... I have nothing to play them on! I like TMDR's music a lot. It's different. It has character. It is fun and it is moving. Occasionally but thankfully regularly it really kicks ass! I have a rather vast CD collection but there is a certain section that gets a tad more attention than the rest. It's on a different level. I'm not a sycophantic nut or anything. I like a LOT of other things musical too but the music of TMDR is something that I would not like to have to do without. Quite apart from all that he also doesn't seem to have that unattractive rock-star 'look at me I'm important' kind of aura. I had a personal reply to a mail a couple of years ago and he seemed to be a really nice 'normal' kind of bloke. As far as bats go, I have been considering putting up a bathouse here in my London backyard (Ontario of course) as we see them everynight in the summer around dusk and they are lovely creatures. I have actually held a north american brown bat in my hands. These are bats that are not mucd bigger than a gerbil and have a wingspan about 5 times the length of their body! Beautiful little Things. I think Bats are my favorite animal and now they have gone and made a cheesy horro flick that is going to inject a new sense of paranoia into an already Bat-Fearing society! I hate that! I'll bet Thomas Dolby likes bats (does this remark keep this conversation thread on topic? :: I know what you mean... when there's more chance of a housecat having rabies than there is of a bat having it... the paranoia about bats is really sad. I love bats too! We have a 'bat cave' (that's what our loading dock is secretly known as!) in the library where I work. Pretty little brown bats like to roost in there, it's perfect for them. But they often end up accidentally coming into the building and flying around looking for a way back out. I actually encountered one flying by in the hallway right outside my department a couple of weeks ago, & went after it trying to keep an eye on it til the animal control specialists could get there. It was reeeeaaaly cute. Alas it finally took to the three-storey-high rafters in the lobby, where it could possibly go hungry, and would have to find its own way out! Since that day, I have been thinking of how I could possibly go about building little shelters near those rafters for the ones that do get in, so the bats will be safe and possibly have water to drink inside the shelter (design pending!), and be easy for the control people to find & re-release. There's an indoor walkway up there, and I could put the shelters along the outside wall of it. I wonder if I could get approval for it from the rest of the library staff? ha ha ha. Maybe if I propose it to the University president, as a safety measure! ...oh and yes, how right you are Ian, Thomas Dolby must *adore* bats... :) Robin T (back on topic now I swear!) ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V4 #289 ***************************
