Popping my head out from lurking mode for a moment.. I actually had the occasion to fly the Goodyear blimp.. a few years ago. I only regret that I didn't have the proper soundtrack going at the time. They base the blimp in south Florida for the winter and a friend of mine knew one of the pilots.. so he arranged for my son and I to go up for a flight that lasted about an hour. It was so cool. Just floating about on the breeze.. My son.. who was 10 at the time.. also got to man the controls.. One day I'll have to edit that videotape with some appropriate music.!! To all the Alloy folks.. sorry I've been absent from view lately. I've just finished a grueling commercial job in New York.. Italian client and an American director.. It was chaos from the word go... I'm still reeling a bit from the experience... I guess there was one thing that was kind of cool... We blocked Wall Street for the day.. brought in police cars and fire trucks and a crowd of 75 extras and put them in the middle of the street. They were all looking at a ledge on a building where eventually.. (Through the miracle of post production) a stunning woman wearing Italian lingerie will step out onto the ledge and then decide to jump.. Whew... am I glad that's over with! Now I get to catch up on the latest news.. so I'm wading through 181 pieces of Dolby related e-mail... enjoying it all. Back to lurk mode.. ciao for now.. I'm sure bats can live in any city type environment.. at least when the air quality is the question.. I was recently on a boating excursion in St. Vincent and we went up to a cave along the coast. Inside were thousands of bats... the stench that emanated from the cave was incredibly foul... so I think they can take the worst London can manage to dish out. So Robin... Do you wear clothes under your clothes? Mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 18:01:17 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: some interesting things... (possibly On-Topic?) I noticed something I thought was quite interesting today. One of the books I began repairing @ work was entitled "Essays Presented to C.G. Seligman" (copyright 1934 by KeganPaul, Trench, Trubner & Co, LTD of London) It occured to me that this is also the last name of Thomas' frequent collaborator since the beginning ot his career, musician Matthew Seligman, so I looked into the book to see who C.G. Seligman was. He was actually an anthropologist who - though he began as a specialist in medicine, pathology, native medicinal practices/surgery, came to specialize in Chinese ceramics and materials of ethno-psychological interest, as well as delving into the study of dreams. I wondered if this had any bearing on Matthew seligman and Thomas Dolby having met... could their fathers have been colleagues? (as is well known, Thomas' father was an archaeologist and a world-reknowned authority on classical Greek pottery) Then, to top it all off, I began checking the pages of this book as usual to see their general condition before commencing repair. I noticed that at one section, there were lots of drawings of chatelaines (these are sort of very early 'Swiss Army Knife'-type utensils of varying functions... and ranging in style from plain to extremely ornate. The chatelaine was worn on a person's garment, and could consist of any number of useful, tiny tools, such as for sewing or general grooming, all contained within a case.) These are of interest to me thanks to my love of gadgets/detailed craftmanship... especially the early chatelaines featured here... so I looked carefully at the drawings. As I kept turning the pages back to front, my eyes happened to land on the first paragraph of that section, which mentions a certain Mr Woolley, who discovered what's considered to be the first known chatelaine - this one of gold, and featuring tweezers, an ear-pick and what's thought to be a toothpick, together with their case - during an excavation in Ur. Could this Mr Woolley possibly be related to Bruce Woolley, another of Thomas' early collaborators..??? And the Mr Woolley mentioned in the same book as Mr Seligman would also have been an anthropologist/archaeologist. The coincidence, if that's all it is, is simply too weird!
