This reminds me of a Brand X gig I went to in March 97. (Apologies in advance. This is a longish Slarvi Saga (tm)) I was lucky to hear about it at all as there was only a tiny ad in the local press about it,and I was amazed because I thought they'd called it a day several years earlier. And when I tried to book tickets in advance, the ticket office had never heard of them. I was begining to think I dreamt the whole thing. Then there was another ad in the paper, with a revised date. When I rang the venue again to try to book, they said there were no advanced bookings, just turn up on the night. There were supposed to be four of us going, but one was struck down with a virus so neither he nor his girlfirend could go. So it was just the two of us,me and an old school friend. My son Paul drove us in to town, and delighted in telling us how his college friends were amazed to hear that his dad was going to Jilly's Rockworld (a.k.a. just Rockworld) for a gig. It's mainly a students' hangout. These children today know NOTHING. Rockworld is in the city centre. I'd never been there before, though I had been to the club above it a few years ago. It's is in the basement and it's dark down there. There are a few tables and chairs near the bar at the back, but no seating near the 'stage,' a platform raised about a foot above the main floor, with a drum platform at the back about another foot higher. The ceiling was obscured by some material which I eventually realised was a parachute. At full capacity it can probably only take 200-300 people, but there can't have been more than around 50 there that night. We got there at 9 pm and there were only about 5 people there. Some of the bass player's (Percy Jones) solo tracks were playing on the PA until the band came on at just after 10 (there was no support band). More people had drifted in and a few were sitting on the floor near the stage. A few brought chairs from the tables, some sat on the floor and the rest of us stood. An interesting selection in the audience, from new age hippies, a couple of bikers in leathers, some folk of a similar age to me and a few student types. A few people had been wandering around near the stage, some going behind it, and one chap was on stage tinkering with the keyboards. I thought he must be the KB tech, but he turned out to be the new KB player, whose name I didn't catch. Another chap wandering about looked like a tramp; bad woolly hat, scruffy jacket, poor quality track suit bottoms tucked into his socks and a pair of scruffy old sneakers on his feet. This turned out to be none other than John Goodsall, the lead guitarist but absolutely no one had recognised him. They were very superb throughout, though the acoustics of the venue didn't help the mix, and the audience was very appreciative and knowledgeable, which made up for the lack of numbers. I can't reconcile such consummate musicians having to play in such an inappropriate venue, or at least to so few people, but the low audience number might have been partly because of the Manchester Music Festival which started that night, but this gig wasn't part of it and therefore didn't get much media coverage. As a side issue, I bought their new CD while at the gig, and there was an e-mail address for their management company on the liner notes, so I mailed them to try to find out who the KB player and drummer were. Within 24 hours I got a reply from them, which I thought was nice of them. The drummer was Pierre Moerlen of Gong/Mike Oldfield fame and the KB player was a new guy called Kris Sjobring. Anyone heard of him? I Almost Forgot! Happy birthday, Crackers! Many happy returns of the day!!! And thank you for making me snort Diet Sprite up my nose. Isn't it absolutely amazing that the same people who did Fireball XL5 and Captain Scarlet went on to do stuff like U.F.O. and Space 1999, and, good heavens - most of them went on to do special effects for Big Uncle Flannel (aka George Lucas) in Star Wars??? Geniuses, all of 'em. I still *LOVE* Captain Scarlet. S.I.G.! Hee. But, really, Crackers, I hope you are having a marvelous birthday! To have the moon knocked out of its orbit on your 34th birthday is really exceptional. I hope you had a big celebration and lots of cake, too. xxx!
