I'm so happy :) This will be a huge benefit to people like me who are the illiterati of the computer world, yet still want to try making art in cyberspace :)!! There's that web-based film project I want to try, which needs to involve sound. We've already gotten 'Premier', and can probably start filming this winter. It's going to be so cool when the time comes..! But for now, I want to purchase one of the little music libraries Beatnik offers & try installing it on my existing page... I have so many questions. I can't wait to revisit & do lots of reading at a more civil hour ( 1am right after seeing Blair Witch is no time to do research) Robin T suffering eyestrain from over an hour of bouncy camera images ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 20:53:09 +-100 From: Slarvibarglhee Subject: Alloy: Baffled, I am. (Totally OT) Why isn't life more simple than it is? Or rather, why isn't MS Messaging more simple than it is? I've just heard that 'The Department' will not pay for my e-mail account when it comes up for renewal, so I thought I'd set myself up with an account with one of the free ISPs. We've recently set up a couple of accounts with Freeserve for office use, so I thought I'd do one for myself as well. First I set up the account and then I tried to configure my e-mail software (Eudora) to work with the new account, but no matter how I set it up, it consistently refused to connect to my mail server. I could have opted for the full automatic setup, with Windows Explorer 5 and Outlook, but it needs about 60 mb to install, and I'm down to my last 50 mb on my aging PC. So, I just installed Windows Messaging as a temporary measure until a beefier PC is available for loan from the office (I thought I was installing Outlook, but it seems this bit of it is just the messaging) which is only supposed to need .6mb, or was it 6mb?? Either way, I could install it without running out of disk space. It installed without too much pain, but I am now experiencing operational difficulties. I set up all my mail aliases from my old address book, but this damn software consistently refuses to deliver anything I send with just an alias, whereas if I use the full address, it seems to deliver them quite happily. I've even set up a new profile for myself, thinking that maybe it didn't like the addresses because I hadn't created one, but it still merrily says "The following recipient(s) could not be reached: 'Slarv' on 02/08/99 19:54:01. No transport provider was available for delivery to this recipient.' unless I use the full address. ('Slarv' is the alias I've set up for myseld BTW.) So, if anyone out there on Alloy knows where I'm going wrong, I'd be only too pleased to hear from you .... assuming that this message gets to Alloy, of course. I'm not too crazy about I.E. 4.0 and above. The higher versions like to take over my computer. You can always set up an email account with hotmail. I have a free hotmail email address account. Just a suggestion. Also, Netscape 4.0 and above have their own email and messaging option. Netscape does not take over your machine and is a little easier to use in my opinion. I check my work email through Netscape messenger. It's been very reliable. It's a shame your work doesn't provide you with a free email account. Good luck!! I saw Blair Witch the first weekend it was out in limited release. Burkittsville is a scant 40 miles from me, and Montgomery College is 5 miles straight up the main drag from my apartment. Every time the fan in my living room catches the vertical blinds and makes them click together, I get goosebumps, and I start looking around for Bad Things in the Dark. I carried my plastic pitchfork (a Halloween leftover) around with me the first couple of nights after seeing it. Highly recommended, if you like the bejeezus scared out of you. I love to camp, but I'm sure as hell not going camping for a LONG TIME. I think there are "big screen movies" and "little screen movies." Good (and I emphasize "good") special effects movies are "big screen movies". Anything based upon the works of Jane Austen is a "little screen movie". What I think you probably lose on the small screen, unless you're watching in a pitch black living room with Dolby Surround Sound, is the intensity of your own reactions to the sounds in the woods. (Also the discomfort of having to walk out into a humid Maryland night and drive home... alone...) I won't say any more than that. Friday the 13th is coming up. Wanna bet that the woods around Burkittsville will be filled with freaks? There was one set of scenes that completely creeped me out on a very primal level.... the whole project is fascinating from beginning to end. The film itself is the sort of thing that doesn't necessarily scare you while you're watching it in the theater... but it sinks in more & more as you go about your evening afterward. I'd love to talk to you about the end of the film, Michael.. that's the set of scenes that got me the most. This isn't the kind of movie I think people would like if they're expecting it to be a real shock fest, or to have something in it that's obviously scary... it's more the equivalent of ambient music in the ways in which it plays on ones most basic fears. I do think the SciFi Channel special "The Curse of the Blair Witch" (comprised of scened & information which was edited from the movie) really sets the mood. After I saw this special, I was just dying to get to the theater to see the rest of the Blair Witch footage. It was extremely creepy! Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Aug 1999 00:44:09 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: (please read) server downtime Jeff has informed us that there will be a brief period of down time on Alloy's server this weekend as he relocates to Northern Virginia. He plans to turn smoe.org off Saturday morning - August 7 - and have it back on line Sunday afternoon August 8. If there are any unanticipated technical problems, the downtime may extend into Monday August 9. No mail will be lost during the move, as everything will be held at Jeff's ISP's backup mail host. When smoe.org is back on-line, mail will be processed normally once more, though the backlog will have to be gotten through & mail sent over the weekend may be delayed a little. In short, what it amounts to is a (very) temporary silencing of the list over the weekend. You can still send posts to Alloy over that period of time, but remember that posts and digests won't appear in anyone's email box for another day or so afterward. If anyone should have any concerns about any of this please write to me & I'll do my best to help you. Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V4 #212 ***************************
