Tilson" Subject: Alloy: a clarification Oh, Jeez. Whoa! Hold everything! You have mistaken the intent of my words. Grant me a moment, and your patience, that I might attempt to shed some light on this misunderstanding. The short version is: I wasn't addressing you, and the two sentences to which I imagine you are reacting (quoted below) are about *my* shortcomings as a member of this group and have absolutely nothing to do with the way Alloy is run, you, or any other person besides myself. If that doesn't cover it for you, then read on. But first I'd like to caution my reader: The balance of this message could become a bit tedious. If you've heard enough already, I beg you skip to your next message. ********************************************************************* Now for the long version. In discussion of the recent Alloy get-together in St. Louis, E(lipse countered a well-deserved compliment I previously paid her with: > *smile* Of course, we all know that the real danger was from > /\/\iles brandishing his wit around... Europa was safe, as her > own is at least as sharp and she seems to know how to use it when > she needs to, but the rest of us were taken by surprise... I replied: > Well, so much for expecting that folks might get a sense of who I > am through my emails alone. I guess I'll post a bio, as oft > requested and summarily ignored, one day soon. Which means: (Sentence 1) I am disappointed that *I* have failed to communicate a comprehensive image of myself through my everyday contacts with Alloy. This has long been a goal of mine within the group; my "Plan A" in lieu of a potentially tedious introductory biography. Here, in sentence 1, I'm acknowledging my failure to reach that goal. (Perhaps I should have added a winky-smiley emoticon at this point (end of sentence 1), but since I was speaking directly to E(lipse and alluding to something we had previously discussed, biographies and the need for them, I didn't feel it was necessary.) Then (in Sentence 2) I reluctantly relent of Plan A saying, "I guess I'll post a bio", guiltily followed with "as oft requested" (by many folks on the list in all those waves of `intros' that have come and gone over the 2-1/4 years I've been on this list), followed in all candor with "and summarily ignored" (by ME! Not you, or anyone else. I've never posted a bio or intro or resume or anything like it to the list. Instead I've systematically ignored every request that we do so in the past, wishing instead that Alloy get to know me by word and deed (See sentence 1)), ending with "one day soon." and this, I refuse to explain . . . OK? /\/\iles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 00:15:05 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: a clarification In a message dated 7/30/99 9:59:33 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Stephen_Tilson@compuserve.com writes: :: You have mistaken the intent of my words. My request for bio's for my page was greeted with contempt from certain factions at the time I made it, which led me to misunderstand your statement. Given our past conflicts & the fact that you are aware of how hard I have worked to keep this list whole over the years, you can surely see why a flippant (misunderstood) comment/criticism from you about my maintenance of Alloy would've pissed me off. But I have to say, speaking my mind about such things from now on will be a lot better than biting my tongue. As regards peace, this list has provided a useful bit of education for me. One person cannot make everything right for everyone & is foolish to try. All that's left is for us to frame them (we'll be pinching pennies - it's expensive & we're broke) and drive them down to the gallery. The show will run August 23 til November 8. The opening reception will be on Friday August 27th from 6-8pm.. though we won't be able to afford to go to it :) LOL!! the silly life artists must lead!
