Congratulations to both you and Teresa! I'll second that... I was "moved". Nice one! 2) Thanks to all who replied to my last "VARIOUS" 3) Robin.. photos.. I know the feeling. I tend to smile too early, and by the time they get around to actually taking the darn shot my grin is creaking under the strain of holding it. I end up looking like a post-traumatic stress sufferer or something. Argh!!! My pet hate is family photos when you have to all line up as if the firing squad is coming. Of course, the sun HAS to be directly behind the "photographer" so we all end up squinting. That's just the way it's done - you can't argue. The "photographer" then proceeds to walk back several miles just to make sure everyone's feet are included - a vital thing I'm sure. Indoor shots are usually made more entertaining by the use of anti-"red-eye" pre-flash - which they think is the real flash. Off goes the first flash, they move the camera away and then off goes the real one - another great shot of the floor. 4) Update on "How to waste a lot of money", or "My new PC"... I was just about ready to take it home on Friday, after only six months of faffing about trying to get it to work, and installing loads of software. The last stage was to remove the network card and Windows login (it had been connected to the office network to allow copying loads of stuff). I sliced my thumb open on some component that felt it really should have been a razor blade, but then didn't own up to it. I still don't know how I managed that, which bit it was. Anyhow, I few re-boots later and suddenly I realised all was not well. The very same "MsgSrv32 not responding" problems again, EMU10K1.VXD "Blue Screens of Death" on shut-down, and slugish/frozen Command windows. Exactly what made me buy a new motherboard in the first place! How I didn't carry the thing over to the window and launch it into space I don't know. I'm not a violent chap but I can imagine how sweet it would be to visit Creative Labs (creators of the SBLive! PC slowdown card, and not forthcoming with support) and hit someone repeatedly until I'm dragged away. Actually, I chose the easier option and had a sulk for an hour or two. Maybe Linux is the answer to my prayers?!! 5) I did have a great weekend to make up for the "frust-rating" of Friday evening though. High 20's Celsius, involving beaches, BBQ's and the hilarity of introducing our 20-month old daughter Emily to the joys of splashing about in the sea. Fabulous. It must have been great, I heard myself saying "Damn, I must have been REALLY good in a previous life" - ha ha. Probably the beer talking. Mind you, it's easy to get carried away when mother-in-law serves up those awesome chocolate covered profiteroles (?spelling? I usually say profit-rolls). Yum. Darn, I'm hungry now, good job I work just 3 doors away from McDonalds - hehe I must have been a SAINT in a previous life :-) Have a good week, +Andy+ - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Get your free email from AltaVista at http://altavista.iname.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 10:43:18 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: Thomas Dolby @ NY conference August 9th and 10th Here's a news item featuring Thomas: Sonic Foundry(R) Announces Sponsorship of the Interactive Music Expo (IMX) The Nation's Largest, Premier Interactive Music Conference and Exposition To be Held August 9th & 10th at the Jacob Javits Center in New York MADISON, Wis., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonic Foundry (Amex: SFO), a leading developer and marketer of media authoring tools and digital audio software for Windows(R), announced today it is a sponsor of the Interactive Music Expo(IMX). To be held August 9th & 10th at the Jacob Javits Center in New York, this innovative new show is expected to be the nation's largest premier interactive music conference and exposition. IMX is the only major industry event that will provide musicians, as well as creators/producers of music, the opportunity to see, touch, play, and understand the technologies responsible for transforming their profession. By recognizing the importance and ever increasing presence of technology in all styles and genre of music, IMX will effectively serve the needs of the entire musical spectrum, including Rock, Rap, Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Metal, Classical, Country, Latin, and more. In addition to providing visitors with access to product displays at more than 120 exhibitor booths, IMX will also feature keynote addresses by recognized music industry experts. Scheduled to attend are Hilary B. Rosen, President & CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Thomas Dolby, and noted producer Phil Ramone. Along with its sponsorship of IMX, Sonic Foundry will also participate in the show as an exhibitor. Throughout the two-day event, the Company will provide demonstrations of its recently released Vegas Pro multitrack media editing system for Windows PCs. Sonic Foundry will also be showing its popular ACID(TM) loop-based music creation tool, as well as other digital audio software products. The IMX show is an ideal display forum for Sonic Foundry because its product line fully addresses the needs of traditional musicians and also features support for the latest Internet-related technologies, such as Microsoft Windows Media Technologies 4.0, RealNetworks RealSystem G2, and MP3. "Sonic Foundry is very proud to be a sponsor of this important new exposition in the world of interactive music," said Roy Elkins, Sonic Foundry's Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "One of our key objectives has always been to promote the synthesis of technology with traditional music, and the IMX show will provide us an excellent forum to demonstrate how our software products can be used effectively by both traditional and interactive musicians." All of the photos of me in that particular wedding I mentioned feature me with some preternatural death rictus because the photographer they hired insisted I grin (and I DO NOT naturally grin when I'm smiling!!) Why must one smile for a picture, anyway? People who just look comfortable, or who are thinking of something else besides the camera, are the most provocative subjects in any well-done photo. I also _really_ love those early portraits from around the turn of the last century, where the people are just waiting for the exposure time to run its course, all dressed up in their best clothes. The best one I've ever seen is of a family with a young baby... everyone else is standing very still, but the baby, who's being held on the mother's lap, is just a great big lacy blur above and below the mother's steady hands. It's really wonderful!! :) Speaking of photographs... the beautiful surroundings in this part of NY State are inspiring me to try my hand at photography again. After living elsewhere for so many years, I'm convinced this is one of the most beautiful areas of the world. If any of my pictures come out well, I'll put them on my page & you can see if you agree! She never knew who he was but she's known a number of his songs for years (Europa, being one she sang spontaneously one time without knowing it's author). She thinks his music is wonderful. She even had the Gate video (which she and her brother love) and never realized it was Thomas' music. >What a touching and wonderful story. Once again, congratulations on your upcoming wedding!! Actually it was a satin dress, with fancy embroidery on the front and sleves. It's also one of the most beautiful dresses I've seen! Funny thing is, it's not actually blue (or whatever color that is). It's actually a steel grey and seems to get changed by probably whatever film is used and whatever lights are around. She has other pictures of it where it appears green and even brown. >You're going to be so happy together :) Of course we'll be expecting even more pictures of the wedding ceremony... (and then some) In regards to Thomas; Iv'e found him to be one of those very few people who doesn't doubt his abilities. He decides he wants to do something and he just does it. He doesn't care what others say, he knows what he wants and he gets it, because he doesn't doubt himself. He knows he's not perfect but he doesn't let that hold him back from trying. He just does it. That's why I've found myself in such admiration for the man. I know that everyone can learn something from this kind of person. I've learned that anyone can be like Thomas, including myself. I grew up doubting myself and learning that I wasn't significant and that life was cruel. People like Thomas have helped me to see the truth of the matter. That's why I look at him, not as some demi-god to be worshipped, but rather to be admired and then copied (not what he does, but *how* and *why* he does it.) He is one of my many role models. Though he has obviously accomplished greater things than I have, I consider him my peer. Of course I don't look down on him, but I don't look up to him either. He simply got a head start on me. And don't say I'm being pompous or self-admiring, I'm just trying to be realistic and trying to tell everyone I meet that they can be the same. Everyone is given *time*, but everyone invests in time differently, some good, some bad. And no one can change how much time they get; everyone gets exactly the same amount. But everyone has in their control, only two things in life; their Effort and Attitude. If they invest their time, effort and attitude wisely, not sparringly, anyone can accomplish anything they set out to do, eventually. As long as their accomplishments have virtue and principle. These are the kinds of things I learn from people like Thomas Dolby and this is why I admire him. ___________ JAMac (Dennis S. (Folks, ya really can't believe everything you read on the Internet!) While Tilson (spelled with one "l") is a lovely name, it is not mine nor will it be if/when Stephen and I decide to wed. As did TMDR's accomplished wife, I will keep my moniker since I worked too damn hard to get my doctorate and afterwards to allow those publications under my name to be "lost" as they tend to do when one changes one's name. That's a sensitive subject for me (do you know what I mean, Dr. Bingley?) so I hope I haven't offended anyone. That said, the page is truly lovely and romantic!
