I spend years resigning myself to the fact that there was no point even hoping that music would ever go anywhere, and then suddenly I'm surrounded by promises of big gigs and contracts and so on. I even got a mail from Boz Boorer this morning saying that he'd think about guitarists for me (he knows everyone in London) and that we'll talk about it when I'm next there. Wouldn't it be cool if he wanted to do it himself! (Warning - I am now dreaming.) I have actually had loads of people (well, about 8) answer my ad in the paper, and a couple of them seem promising, so fingers crossed that I can keep the good ones interested. Honorary Alloyer Jos signed up immediately to play keyboards again, so then with JAMac's fiancee on drums, her brothers as backing singers, and of course, Crackers on accordion, we'll be ready to gig in weeks! the_copse Hi Tim! Lissu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 05:36:47 -0400 (EDT) From: andyjmail@cheerful.com Subject: Alloy: VARIOUS Hi all, 1) I was reading Slashdot(.org - News for Nerds) and in particular an item on the recovery of the Mercury Capsule from 3 miles down after 38 years. Look what I found : by Quarters on Wednesday July 21, @01:48PM EDT (#51) (User Info) There was/is speculation that he panicked. Instead of waiting for the helicopter to arrive he (supposedly) blew the hatch early and climbed out into the sea. Claustrophobia? Anxiety? Who knows. The bottom of the hatch sat very near the water line and in moderatey rough seas the capsule could take on water. Even a small amount of water would cause the capsule to become unbalanced and list over. If that happened (as it did) the capsule would flood and sink. The $$ loss was only overshadowed by the total loss of onboard telemetry. Basically the sinking totally negated the usefullness of the launch since they lost the capsule and all the data that was supposed to be gathered during the trip. "Albert Einsten nailed space-time, but the wild thing had him stumped." -Thomas Dolby 2) Lucky me... I managed to get my hands on someone's vinyl collection the other day, and they just happened to have Windpower 7" and Golden Age of Wireless... with the Wreck of the Fairchild. "Go on then, you can have them!" Whey hey! The album's in better condition than mine... and no second-hand record shop sticker on it. Yippee. The piccy on Windpower is of Thomas with some lovely old vintage electric equipment - you all know it I'm sure - I think this is the same panel that Thomas now keeps in his living room at his English seaside residence. See the playing.jpg pic on my Adam & Joe Show video captures page. (http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Lot/8142/music/adamnjoe/playing.jpg) I could do with some gear like that - not sure the wife would approve though, two speakers in the living room is too much! I've even shoved the VCR, satellite box and AV-amp in another room for appearances sake, all connected up and operated by a remote control extender device. Still, it keeps the cats and kiddies out of the VCR tape slot I suppose. Visitors just see the telly and two speakers and say "don't you have a video?" hehe. And babysitters don't get the chance to mess up my VCR timed recordings when I'm out :-) 3) Congratulations/sympathy to those experiencing job "issues". Yes, I hesitate to post items SOLELY concerned with personal issues (remember how I joined this list, hehe) BUT Lissu... which part of La Belle France? Anywhere near my neck of the woods? We'll be getting about a 95 per cent eclipse here in Jersey... close but no cigar. 4) Robin, the links all seem to work, it's getting better all the time... Having looked at the HTML I'm wondering how you're having trouble with the colo(u)rs. The colour of links is governed by the initial BODY tag : body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" text="#000000" link="#330099" vlink="#6699CC" alink="#0033FF", where link=color of links, vlink=color of Visited links, and alink=color of links being Accessed, I think - I don't worry too much about alink. I presume the general idea of HTML is to makes links obvious by using one particular color for them, and not using the color for anything that isn't a link, whereas you have some FONT trickery going on changing the color as you go. The blue also tends to look darker when using the B tag (for bold). Still, it looks better than my sad puny efforts, you've obviously got art in your soul, whereas I'm just an ar'soul :-) 5) I like the way you guys all seem to meet up from time to time, is there anyone else here who HASN'T met any other Alloy-ites? Probably the reverse of what traditional computer designers are used to (?) I keep running into trouble becaue I'm still missing a real grasp of what is actually going on with the program's little internal pathways & such. For instance, I wound up with those two completely different shades of #9900FF - dark blue and very pale lavender, independent of whether the font was bold or not - when I changed the link color under text color, thinking it was the link color... links are really meant to be adjusted in Page Properties as I finally learned when Dave got home (eep). I confused the poor program with my foolishness & for some reason, I ended up with blotchy links.
