I was just surfing and came across a site called CD Universe which is an online CD store. As usuall, I did my search for Thomas Dolby as was suprised to find a listing for a CD being released on August 10th under the imports section called 12 by 12. Anyone hear of this? Is this the suprise that Thomas mentioned earlier? I wonder what it has on it? There was no track listing. Here's the link to the site I found this on: http://cdu2.cduniverse.com/ Keith Stansell, Denver _________________________ http://www.keith.stansell.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 02:45:00 -0700 From: Robyn Moore Subject: Re: Alloy: 12 Plus 12 ? Finally tracked it down on a British CD store site - www.101cd.com. The following is what I found there. THOMAS DOLBY - 12 X 12 Format: CD album Catalogue number: 5211942 UPC number: 0724352119424001 Release date: 8/2/99 Price: £8.37 - click here to buy Notes: 12" mixes compilation Track Listing 1 Europa and the pirate twins 2 Windpower 3 Flying North 4 She blinded me with science 5 One of our submarines 6 Get out of the mix 7 Hyperactive 8 Dissidents (the search for the truth part 1) 9 May the cube be with you 10 Airhead 11 Hot sauce 12 My brain is like a sieve (I had to adjust the cut/paste a bit, so I hope it translates well in posting. My apologies if it didn't.) Oddly enough, a week ago, I bought a 2-record set from 1985 called "12X12 Mega Mixes", which has an interesting mix of Dissidents - both parts 1 and 2, with most of the vocal track stripped out of it. Whoever was cataloguing records for resale dropped it into the Dolby bin (as opposed to listing it with any of the other 11 artists), so I grabbed it along with the 12 inch 45 of Science/Jungle Line, the promotional 12 inch version of Science(club and radio)/Submarines and Lene Lovich's "New Toy" single on 45. I also got a pile of used Dr Who videos, and the clerk gave me the 20% off price even though the sale didn't officially start until the next day, so I had an incredibly good day at the record store. :) I also recently picked up a copy of the new Hyperactive import, which has some interesting track choices on it. It's also a picture CD, with the same picture that shows up on the title insert printed on the CD itself, only all in red. The picture looks to be about TFE vintage, with Thomas sitting on a rock shelf, looking back toward the camera, wearing granny-style photo-grey (I assume) glasses, a dark casual outfit, and a felt top hat, with shoulder-length hair. It's shot into the sun, so it's artistically overexposed, with his face mostly shadowed. (I know how Robin likes to hear about pictures of Thomas, so I thought I'd brighten her day by describing this one. ::grin::) At any rate, I'll stop rattling on, and I hope that assuages your curiosity. :) Robyn M @ Robyn Moore @ http://www.alveus.com/kbrm/robyn.html @ You knew the job was dangerous when you took it. - S.C. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 10:14:56 -0700 From: Robyn Moore Subject: Alloy: Rampant Hyperactivity Interestingly enough, upon investigation, there seems to be more than one recent new import CD named 'Hyperactive', at least according to the aforementioned www.101cd.com site. One of them doesn't have a playlist on site, but the catalogue number matches the one I have. The playlist for this one is: Dissidents, Hyperactive!, She Blinded Me With Science, White City, Radio Silence, Airwaves, Windpower, One Of Our Submarines, Weightless, Screen Kiss, Mulu The Rain Forest, The Flat Earth, Dissidents(The Search For Truth Pt.2), Get Out Of My Mix/Dolby's Cube. (The version of Airwaves on this is the long one with the radio noises, which I believe is from the "Blinded By Science" mini-LP.) The other CD is listed as 'Hyperactive!', and the playlist is as follows: Hyperactive, She Blinded Me With Science, I Scare Myself, Key To Her Ferrari, Flat Earth, Mulu The Rain Forest, Europa And The Pirate Twins, Ability To Swing, Radio Silence, Cloudburst At Shingle Street, Windpower, White City, Airhead, Hot Sauce, May The Cube Be With You. The respective catalogue numbers are DC854392 for the former and 4994202 for the latter. Also, in regards again to the 12X12 CD, I found it (sans playlist) on the Tower site, on sale for $12.99 even though it's a special order disc. It was tricky to find, though. I had to plug 'Thomas Dolby' into the search engine, and then when the list came up, click on his name again in one of the CD listings, which took me to a new list which 12X12 was on. I don't know why it doesn't come up on the original search, but it doesn't. But if you're inclined toward online ordering, it does seem to be cheaper there than elsewhere. However, it also says that it came available 7/13 for special order, even though everywhere else I looked said early August, so go figure. Okay, now I'm starting to ramble, so I'm really going to go to sleep. Honest. I mean it. Really. You can believe me. Thanks Robyn for the CD info. Now, for a bit off-topic report, but of interest to at least three people I know on this list. Last night I saw They Might Be Giants at the AT&T LODO Music Festival here in Denver. They have a great live show! After the show, John Flansburg signed autographs at the Media Play booth. Very nice guy. I got a T-shirt and CD autographed. Now the news. TMBG's have a new "Album" coming out Tuesday, but only available online in the form of MP3's. Apparently they are currently "between record companies" and Emusic.com paid them quite well to release an album this way. They played some of the new songs and they were well received by the audience. The new album is called "Long Tall Weekend" and will be available at this link: http://www.emusic.com/06b1a62c5a62d36a/promo/tmbg/index.html I'm sorry, this sounds like a sales pitch, but I just thought there would be some people here interested. During our Flattery Earth CD Release party, Beth Meyer and Dennis Alexander erupted into spontaneous singing of "Turn Around" by TMBG.
