Hand-to-forehead, wandering the moors kind of stuff... hm, perhaps I'll need another 'consultation'... :) Meanwhile, I have some excellent personal news - I've just made it through a three-hour job interview for the position I'm after, of preservation bookbinding assistant, and I think it went exceedingly well! Believe it or not, even though I was interviewed by a few different people, sat in five different offices and was reviewed by two separate panels, it was by far the most *fun* interview I've ever been on. Everyone there was so warm and personable and seemed really interested in hearing what I had to say about my qualifications... I felt very much at home. One of the people I spoke with told me about a time she got to handle a book from the 1500's which is part of the university's collections. I've handled violins and other instruments similar in age, and that almost unreal sense of holding an object which was made and used so long ago is difficult to explain - except that it's a tremendous privilege to be a part of that succession of people over the centuries who have kept that instrument, or book, alive. I won't hear for another two weeks (as a state funded position, everyone's comments on me have to be compiled, reviewed, and filed with a committee for approval before a final decision is reached) I'll be very anxious until then, and it will be hard to type with *all* of my fingers crossed. And now for a movie review, especially for those of you who love scary movies. A friend of mine has had the chance to see a sneak preview of a new film called 'The Blair Witch Project'. Now bear in mind, my friend is not someone who is easily frightened by scary films - she's seen them all. According to her, this is by far the scariest, most chilling movie she has *ever* seen in her entire life, and she's slept with the lights on ever since! The unique thing about this film is that nothing frightening is actually shown... you merely the reactions of the people 'interviewed' in the film (it's done as a documentary of the last footage made by film students investigating a supernatural-related incident) Their fear, as well as the sound effects in the picture, is what makes it so singularly frightening according to her. If you're a scary movie buff, clearly you must run to the theater as soon as this film is released, as will I. But based on my friend's assessment, I know I'm going to regret this!!! pirouetting into ghost story terror (and sorry for being so OT!) He had quite the same reaction to the film-very chilling but difficult to explain since it is not a "movie" per se but a real time documentary of the disappearance of the crew from their own footage found a year later with their remaining belongings. He has a copy which he said he would pass along to me so anyone who's curious about the film can either catch it at their local art house or wait and pass around my copy. Getting spooked just talking about it-let's get back to Dolby! I am just *DYING* to see this movie. I adore scary movies, and this one has the added benefit of being set here in Maryland - the main characters - the missing film students - are supposed to be students from Montgomery College, just 5 miles north of my apartment. In fact, I drove past the college this evening and thought about this movie. Dang it, why can't I ever luck into one of these sneak preview things?!?! It's still in the 90's here at almost 1 a.m., and my air conditioner broke yesterday - no one can get here until 2 p.m. tomorrow. The temperature in the living room (coolest place in the apartment) is hovering at 88, and I know I'll get no sleep tonight. I'm cooking from the inside... Someone just wrote to me today, offering me a press kit for TGAOW - for free - what a wonderful person!!! Off to soak my tootsies in ice water... Cheers, Melissa - -- Melissa R.
