Hello everyone, hope you're all well. Me, I turned 32 on Sunday (bah!) and had a disastrous meal out with the family. Hehe, they hadn't made the table large enough, the staff were downright miserable all evening, it took an hour and a half for the food to arrive, four young children were getting fractious, and to cap it all I broke a tooth. Never mind :) I could bore you further with medical ailments, but I won't. I'll just wait for the blood test results, hehe. But anyway... HELP!!! PLEASE!!! Back in the early 1980's I was doing a test recording from a French radio station, in mono. As the Spandau Ballet song ended, some unknown track started that caught my attention right away - I left the tape rolling and got a fair capture of it. It is a pleasant load of synth-ery, with a bass line that's got me hooked, and nice extra twiddly effects. I've never heard it anywhere since, so I'd REALLY love to know who's responsible for it - so that I can try and track down a real copy of it. I've a feeling it might sound quite wonderful in stereo... Back in those days I thought it might be the work of Thomas Dolby (all I had then was a scratchy copy of The Golden Age of Wireless, and I didn't know his singing voice as well as I do now). This has been a mystery to me for approaching 20 years now, so I'd be more than a tad grateful for any clues... Here is my attempt at deciphering the words : Change of mind, just looked around (?) Takes me back - to where we met A ?? ??removed?? - a promise kept Assorted lies, I don't believe ??? ??? -- to be ??? --- (to chorus...) Words in your eyes, they say in your eyes "Go away, go away" (sounds like!) To be by your side, I'd travel all night "Go away, go away" (oh, this can't be right!) ??? ??? to let me down And when you leave I can never make my mind up You're on the move - ??? move too far ??? ??? life - it's only me, I'm not deceived at all Chorus "too far for me" (hehe???) to be the same I'll try again, I'm here alone I shan't forget I feel this way And all the time you can dance until we meet again Chorus ends. - just over 4 minutes - ----------------- If this appeal fails, I'll just have to make a web-page out of this, stick it on my site and hope for the best. Maybe one day someone with the answer will see it and put me out of my misery :) I thank you. +Andy+ - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Get your free email from AltaVista at http://altavista.iname.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 10:58:57 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Mystery song, half-OT (!) Never mind :) :: Gosh Andy, that beats my birthday by a mile (and I thought mine was bizarre - always is - but especially this year)! How did you break that tooth - was there some foreign object in the food? Ouch! I want to read your mystery lyrics more closely in case I can help you out. I know what it's like having a long-term mystery such as this. When I was a child I heard this amazing thing as background music on TV and they never said what it was.. it took me about 15 years to finally hear it again, and have it named to me (Rachmaninov's variation on a theme by Paganini) Now I just have to find who did that particular version I heard - which was very unusual. It was like a jazz version (???) For the curious, a summary of my birthday: My mom was still in the hospital then and felt bad she couldn't have made me a cake for my birthday, so as a surprise I spent the morning looking alll over town for a good diabetic dessert cookbook (not the kind that calls for artificial sweeteners, but uses the real stuff in moderation) so that I could make something we could share. I did find an excellent one & ran home to make a chocolate cake before visiting hours were over. While we were visiting her that evening - and BTW she loved the cake! - all the power went out in my mom's wing of the hospital - some construction going on (on Sunday night??). The backup generators still allowed for the beds to adjust & emergency equipment to work, but the air stopped circulating, and her windows couldn't be opened because on that level they had 'suicide windows' (apparently a lot of suicide cases come through physical rehab & they have to have it this way) Since both her legs were essentially paralyzed from having had surgery, this all made her feel understandably worried that something was wrong in the hospital & we stuck around to find out what was going on. We were assured by the staff, after a few hours, that the problem would be fixed in a very short time. Meanwhile we'd gotten a fan brought into the room so that the air would at least be moving, and that made my mom feel much better. By then it was nearly 11pm. Dave then took me out for a bite to eat. We ate at a nice all-night restaurant. And later, all night long, I kept having horrendous nightmare after nightmare where I'd think I'd woken up, but I was still in the dream, and it was all really vivid and horrible, with me being scared by something and asking Dave for help, and him doing something freakishly monstrous and unearthly in response. Over and over again. It was just like one of those Hollywood horror flicks!! At one point in these dreams I came out to use the computer and it startled me by actually speaking in a loud, English voice. (whereupon I tried to make it stop by getting a half pint of cream from the fridge & dumping it all over the computer :) At another point, I thought there was a wild animal in the bedroom with us. By the next morning, I'd really thought the food must had gone bad without anyone's knowing & had developed some kind of natural toxin in it (it was shrimp) or that I was weirdly allergic to one of the herbs, or that someone had just gone & dumped a whole ton of PCP into the melted butter. I've never had anything like that happen to me before in my life! I finally snapped out of it at around 5:30 am & Dave comforted me by making me a big cup of nice hot tea, and reassured me very sweetly that I probably hadn't been accidentally poisoned. Poor Dave! Anyway... I hope your tooth is repaired & you're feeling better :) And most of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDY!! Best of luck with your musical quest... Any other good listen-first sites? So far I've purchased 3 Eno CD's in hopes that I'd get lucky.. (I tried Andy's query at lyrics.ch, which is back up now after all the legalities.. but the site sucks eggs now that it's been revamped.) - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V4 #183 ***************************
