Tilson" Subject: Alloy: News of Trevor Blagg Dear Alloy, I've been worried recently about the silence from Trevor Blagg, but am happy to report that he is well. He and his wife, Tine, are in the throes of relocation, and so have not had regular email access for nearly a month. Trev will be back with us in mid-June if all goes well. Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 02:45:09 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Lyric question. Dear Alloy, In my quest to provide lyrics for Russ' TMDR pages I've come across the following question. While listening to The Flat Earth I was unable to resolve whether the back-up voice is singing "Home, Baby" or "Home, Maybe". ^^^^ ^^^^^ Now, I know that this sounds like a silly question coming from me of all people - seeing as how I covered that tune on The Flattery Earth, but I've always heard it as "Maybe". Nevertheless, I sang it as "Baby" because that's what Mary said it was , and that seems to fit the other backing vocals better. So, the question: Is it "Baby" or "Maybe"? Inquisitorially, Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 15:22:37 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: a little something I didn't know before! While aimlessly browsing the internet on my lunchbreak, I ended up somehow linking through to the Entertainment Weekly site... and out of curiosity put "Thomas Dolby" into the search box. It came up with something I didn't know before... http://cgi.pathfinder.com/ew/archive/1,1798,1|19375|17|thomas_dolby,00.html?na me1=thomas+dolby&lastresult=6&query=thomas+dolby+%3CIN%3E+MAJOR+%3COR%3E+thoma s+dolby+%3CAND%3E+%5FSTYLE%3D%2Fexport%2Fverity%2Fcollections%2Fewlib%2Fstyle% 2Fstyle%2Eddd&major_ref=OFF&mtype=0&list_size=25&direction= for a brief review of The People vs Larry Flint. I've long noticed Mr Newman's scores in films I've seen & admired them very much - I always pay particular attention to film scores & his always stand out. The funny thing is, whenever I see the name Thomas Newman on a film, I've always said to Dave (my constant filmgoing companion) that it should say Thomas Dolby instead. It's true, ask Dave! Why did I say this?? Gasppp... the strangeness, the strangeness of it all!! I've counted (in addition to Larry Flint) Men Don't Leave, Little Women, The Shawshank Redemption, The Player, Unstrung Heroes, Up Close & Personal, Oscar and Lucinda... erm.. did everybody already know this but me? :) If this was meant to be a trade secret & I've just blown the lid off it, I certainly do apologise, but the thought is just so stunning. Have I really just found news of my deepest heart's desire... an extensive library of Thomas' incomparable film score work... that which I've been yearning for all these years? Robin T weeping with gratitude and with mind reeling at the very possibility while hyperventillating into a paper bag ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 13:07:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Elaine Linstruth Subject: Re: Alloy: a little something I didn't know before! "This orchestral score by Thomas Newman (formerly Thomas Dolby) becomes progressively more abstract and brooding....." but IMDb says Thomas Newman is DOB 10/20/55 and married to someone named Ann Marie, graduated from Yale. But the biographical information is mostly cryptic and sparse. So, either we're confused or Steven Mirkin from EW is a really bad reporter. What's the (I) for, after someone's name at IMDb? - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) On Wed, 2 Jun 1999 RThurF@aol.com wrote: > > > http://cgi.pathfinder.com/ew/archive/1,1798,1|19375|17|thomas_dolby,00.html?na > me1=thomas+dolby&lastresult=6&query=thomas+dolby+%3CIN%3E+MAJOR+%3COR%3E+thoma > s+dolby+%3CAND%3E+%5FSTYLE%3D%2Fexport%2Fverity%2Fcollections%2Fewlib%2Fstyle% > 2Fstyle%2Eddd&major_ref=OFF&mtype=0&list_size=25&direction= > > I've long noticed Mr Newman's scores in films I've seen & admired them > very much - I always pay particular attention to film scores & his > always stand out. I suggest that listening to these scores will bear out our conjecture - or not. To my ear, Thomas has an unmistakable style. Elaine asked: > What's the (I) for, after someone's name at IMDb? This indicates there is more than one "Thomas Newman" in the IMDb, and that this is the first one they listed. Great work, Robin! Let's hope it pans out! The sheer number of these suggests this is not our man, as our Thomas has been quite busy with other projects during this time-frame, or so we are led to believe. ;-) Or, he really *is* a time traveller . . .
