Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Vote on: A BDay suggestion... Dear /\lloy, I see that Lem's clever and persuasive proposal has been well seconded, so no need to add mine. (I have to say that was *very* well written, Lem, especially considering you've been globe-hopping across eight time-zones, not getting much sleep, and absorbed with company business all the while. It's like you're a professional writer or something . . .) Here is my thinking on the matter: Given the current plan for BDay3, I regretfully have to decline participation in any but the most cursory fashion. For me, the study, arrangement, and recording process is time and energy-consuming in the extreme. I just don't have the talent and training to achieve acceptable results in a short amount of time, or so it has been in the past. So, I am in favor of rescheduling the project - as I would like to contribute more than just a greeting. I really can't decide between a Millennial Issue or the 42nd birthday, but I am more in favor of the 42nd at this time, especially given the project's concept, and the need, as Lem twigged it, to "re-charge (my) creative batteries". Given all that's been written on this subject by ourselves, the nature of Alloy as a democracy, and the need for fairness and unity, it appears that we (those of us considering or already committed to the next tribute) should put the issue to vote. Parlimentarily speaking, invoking a proposal to vote on any issue requires someone to second it, but given that we've already had a majority of positive responses to Lem's suggestion I think it should be acceptable to proceed, if I may be so bold. Therefore - ********************************************************************** Shall it be resolved that we, the contributors of the next Alloy tribute, elect to delay the production and release of our currently proposed effort beyond the currently published deadlines? Yes, or No? If you voted Yes, then which date would you choose? If we are indeed to keep our current deadlines then the sooner we know the better. Whatever we do, let's do it as a group. Absolutely. I agree. But I thought it had become clear lots of people would probably miss this deadline that's coming up. If BDay III is indeed shifted to aim for October 2000, as seems to be a consensus among most of the contributors (?) then I think we need to set a firm deadline that gives Peter ample time to master the work. I don't in any way want to suggest that people who are raring to go should think that they've wasted their time. The suggestion of concentrating on another contribution is a good one. Especially given that I keep thinking I've picked the wrong track! Personally, I threw in October 2000 as a bit of a joke - it seems like an awfully long time from now. Leaving an ample buffer for Peter to do his stuff we'd be looking at handing in contributions this time next year. Too long a wait for Crackers by the sound of it. Then again, if we aim for a Millenium issue, then that will squeeze into the time available should we decide to pursue BDay IV. Maybe we need to think about what we each want to do and then take a vote or something. I listened again to the song Samson and Delila today from the video. It's going to be a lot of fun and challenge. As a sideline project strictly for fun, I'm thinking of revising the words for the song 'Airhead' so that it comes from a female's point of view. When I'm through revising, I'll share the words with ya all. Don't worry, if I were actually use this revision for anything I would get TMDR's express Okay on the matter. In fact, he might get a kick out of it after all. I agree with putting the Bday III date to Oct. 2000. It seems a long time, but for me time goes by very fast these days. The months can go by quicker then one may think. Pax Aye, Kate;-) PS. Has anyone thought of perhaps sending at least a birthday greeting to Dolby's wife Kathleen on her birthday??? If you can believe it, I read EVERY SINGLE POST that had been accumulating in my box since I went eastward on 4/21. I'm so proud. Btw the trip was great, if tiring, and I visited 5-count-em-5 US states. A first story for the baby book. It was indeed a notable trip.. 2900 miles each way, long airport delays in DFW, Mom works in a high school (so every day became some bomb threat or misbehaving kid or hysterical parent-teacher diatribe about inappropriate clothing..), the toddler's first beach experience and pony ride, lots of good foods I can't get in SoCal.. the list goes on and on! Anyway, glad to be back and how ya doin and Happy Spring all that. And my copy of The Flattery Earth was in my held mail!! I opened it and said to my husband, "come here, you gotta see this!" I was so impressed, it looks SO awesome. What a great job! And *then* I got to *listen* to it ;). I won't go through each track, as I agree completely with every fond and appreciative review that I've read here at Alloy. (Even from TMDR, what a treat for you guys!!) I am impressed and honored to have a copy and wish to thank each of you. To cast my vote in the Project3 query, I vote for October 2000. My reasons are threefold: 1) it's a birthday project, 2) oct-jan is only adding a bit of time, although that's not a major reason, and 3) the new "millenium" does not start until 1/1/2001. 1/1/2000 is the beginning of the last year of this millenium. Not to be too persnickety. Just pointing that out. :) Maybe, if that's the choice, "Y2K Edition" is a possible name. Makes me wish I could play an instrument. My musical abilities for the last decade are limited to late-night camping trips, fueled by spirits, with my friends who play guitar.. and consists of songs like The Cramps' "Goo Goo Muck" and old Johnny Cash tunes like "I Walk The Line." That, and singing in the car. I'm so embarrassed though, I won't even sing if my two-year-old is in the car with me. :) Too bad those friends still live in Maryland. Beth, I got a picture in my mail as well, thank you so much! Milena is looking in fine form, and I sure hope you're getting more sleep now that she's got a couple months under her belt. I am still expecting in late September, finally have an appetite again, and am beginning to look like the side of a house. My husband pointed out that "well, you ARE a house." Ok that's enough catching up I guess. Thanks again and just wanted to let you know I was back among the living. - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 14:21:02 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Cracknell Subject: Alloy: Proposal "Project B-day: Deja Vu" In article <199905140856065@lem.zdnetmail.co.uk>, you wrote: >Personally, I threw in October 2000 as a bit of a joke - it seems like an >awfully long time from now. I was listening to my copy of AAMBC today and I noticed that in some places the tape is showing signs of wearing out (particularily Lissu's track). It occures to me my tape of AAMBC will sometime be no longer playable. Since CD technology has now reached the home perhaps this year we could re-release AAMBC and send Thomas a copy on CD (which he would likely get more use out of anyways since I believe he only has a tape deck in his car). Who has the digital masters of AAMBC? Maybe they could get them into the hands of someone who can put them on CD. Contributors of AAMBC will then be able to (if they so desire) purchase (at cost only) a copy of AAMBC on CD. Then when our tapes wear out we can always make ourselves a new one. If we do do this for Thomas's birthday this year, it will make a nice present plus it will give Monya a chance to either re-record her version of Cruel, or if she doesn't mind, I've had some ideas how I might be able to fix it up a bit and then resubmit it for AAMBC. Then october 2000 will be the release of Project B-Day III. As well as a CD of AAMBC, perhaps this year we could all work on submissions for Robin's Project B-Day book idea. It likely won't take as much time to put together the book so the deadline could be moved back. An arrangement like this will make the wait for Project B-Day III a little more tolerable. Incidently, I have discovered that if you record the songs from TFltryE after the ones on AAMBC without the greetings (so Dissidents comes after the second version of Windpower and then Mulu is the first song on the B-Side) you can fit all of the A-CD from PDB-II on the same tape as PBD-I. Perfect for walkman listening. Anyways, let's call this proposal (dealying PBD-III until next year, and re-issuing a CD of PBD-I this year possibly with Robin's PBD: The Book) "Project B-Day: Deja Vu".
