While lying on the floor of an airport lounge the other day it struck me that I'm never going to be able to complete my cover version for this year's BDay tribute in the eleven weeks remaining, given my work schedule, ambitions for the song, finanical status and lack of equipment. It also struck me that I'm probably not alone in thinking 'my God, we just did the last one!'. It then further struck me that it would be embarrassing to miss TMDR's birthday yet again. Also, I would hate to see our efforts to create such fine works of tribute dribble away. Nothing saps creativity like regularity. During my trip this week past I met up with /\/\iles and it seems plain that he needs a little more than a few weeks to re-charge his creative batteries before embarking on his own BDay III track - after Herculean contributions to BDAy II. Then there's the fact that birthday presents shouldn't be predictable. So I have a proposal that I'd like everyone to consider - those already committed to BDay III and those just maybe thinking about it after the recent BDay II discussion. We have a significant date coming up that, while not TMDR's birthday, is almost equally significant - the new Millennium. Does anyone else agree that it would be fitting to adjust our schedule to honour our founder with a New Millennium compilation, to be delivered at least one week before the Big Day?(We wouldn't even have to change the acronym - BDay III = Big Day III). I even have a name to suggest (somewhat predictably): The Golden Age of Alloy - Millennium Issue - 6d. Don't run away with the idea that this gives us oodles of extra time and that thoughts for a tribute can be back-burnered. The adjustment only adds an extra eight weeks. But, for me, the extra would help a lot. Finally, as an extra bonus, this plan would give us a clear 1000 years before we definitely had to do another :-) Alternatively, given that we missed this year's birthday by six months through nobody's fault, we could just take aim right now for Thomas's 42nd birthday in October 2000. 42 is, after all, the most significant number in the Universe. I agree with Lem. Though I'm not a contributor it did strike me that writing, recording, and producing BDayIII in time for Thomas' birthday this October would be practically impossible, considering the thoroughness with which I know everyone here likes to work. Meanwhile October2000 seems like an especially fun date to aim for next. It would give everyone a chance to refresh themselves & to put some personal creative distance between that last project and the next, and in which case, I might even be able to finally do some artwork that could be contributed to the cd. I've completely given up on ever being able to record anything for it. My work might be a little too atypical of what you'd expect for the cover of a birthday tribute, so I'm not interested in doing the cover art necessarily, but I would be very pleased to do a background image for inside the jewel case or for the booklet if there is one. Who is doing the layouts for the next project? Please get in touch concerning requirements (dimensions, theme etc) if there's space for my contribution. Stephen, LOL, now that email got me up this morning. I'm over the 'Valley thing' today so no more silly talk. Anyway, after talking to my husband about the Bday entry, we've decided to do a cover for the song 'Samson and Delila' from the Live Wireless video. He's very excited about doing this and so am I. Will be visiting the page you suggested ASAP.. Pax Aye, Kate;-) Stephen M. Tilson wrote: > Kate the Val wrote: > > > Sounds like someone is familiar with the Simpsons you know. Like, > > totally..... I agree, 42 is the most significant number in the universe. We should aim for the big 42 in Oct. of 2000. It'll give us more time to get musical again despite all of the highland games and other things we do. By the way, I have a few wedding jpgs that I would like to share with ya all. Is there a place to email them to???? Please let me know. Pax Aye, Kate;-) RThurF@aol.com wrote: > I agree with Lem. Brown" Subject: Alloy: A BDay suggestion... Another voice pipes up from the crowd... I like the idea of the next tribute being for TMDR's 42nd birthday as well. Even though I'll probably only send along a greeting, I still could use a little more time to enjoy the peace here before /\/\iles gears up again. And I say, yes, yes, to Robin's creation of some graphics! It really didn't seem right to not have a contribution from you on BDay II, Robin, and it was a shame that your book idea didn't come to fruition. And while I'm posting, let me comment on some earlier messages: Lem, you are *most definitely* a babe, space or otherwise! Crackers, thank you so much for your kind words about my vocals. I ended up being very dissatisfied with them and had Stephen not worked so hard on the music, I would have just jettisoned the whole thing. I was very touched. Lissu, I hope your poor wrists, hands, and whatever else hurts is healing quickly. And thank you very much for your compliments! They meant a lot coming from she of the golden voice! Ian, welcome back! It was a pleasure talking to you this weekend. Perhaps I should send you copies of the original versions of Don't Turn Away so you can hear what it's really supposed to sound like. Peter, thank you very much for taking over the production duties this time. That will go a long way in restoring my sanity! And let's hear it for TMDR's wife, Kathleen. What a formidable ally to have in our corner! Europa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 22:50:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Cracknell Subject: Re: Alloy: A BDay suggestion... I just don't really want to get into the habbit of having people not take the deadlines seriously and having it delayed further and further each year we do it. It's more fitting, I believe, to pay tribute to the man on his birthday than any other day of the year. If we do postpone the release of PBD-III until a later date we should make it known that there will be no delay in the release of PBD-IV so if you don't think you'll find time to do it next year then do your PBD-IV recording at the same time you do your PBD-III one. I would like to see the projects maintain a tradition of being in Thomas's hands on his birthday. If everyone else agrees to delay this year's PBD-III in order to compensate for the delay of last year's project then let's do it with the fore-knowledge that there will be no delay on PBD-IV otherwise people will just keep saying "I can't (or can't be bothered) for whatever reason do my recording on time so move the deadline back to accomodate me." which isn't fair to the people who bust their ass getting their recordings done on time. Given the circumstances I can understand letting things slide for PBD-III but I think we should really try to get back on track if we're going to keep doing these things otherwise if we don't have a solid commitment to do these things on time I'm afraid interest in doing these projects will fizzle out and I'm having way too much fun with it to want to see that happen.
