It's not quite as bad as it sounds in that you can save a partial sequence to disk, add to it, and reload if it didn't work out or save if it did. But I think I must have repeated this load, fiddle, load fiddle, save process about 88 million times. Then I decided that the finished piece sounded horrible with the piano sample I'd used (which is not very accurate) so I swapped to a steel-guitar sample and found that the sequence sounded very nasty indeed with this different sound. So I started again from scratch. It was slightly quicker second time around, since I already had an 'arrangement' to work from. But I guess I must still have aged about 40 years doing it.

Did anyone else catch Mr D on the Adam and Joe show? Who'd have thought - our fearless leader singing in the style of Orville the duck. I've seen it all now.

I saw something a few months ago on VH1 in which two 'cops' and a camera crew
go to musicians' or actors' homes and raid their record collection, to see
what they really listen to. It may also be called Record Police but I can't
remember. Was this show similar? Does Adam and Joe air exclusively in
Britain? Who's Orville? Is he anything like Daffy, or is he more of a Donald
type duck?
:)

Ooops, my apologies! I looked at them again & realised my layout was simply
being compressed - I hadn't been viewing it full-screen (though I'd designed
it full-screen...) So, if anyone should look at my pages and think the layout
looks bizarre, make sure it's full-screen width, and then you can pass
judgement! And thanks so much for the very sweet compliments, Lissu ;)

In the 1984 article, Thomas mentions Clif Brigden laying down 'liver
percussion' over the top of the computer percussion. This is taken
letter-for-letter from the article... but I want to clarify, is this a typo
(as my instincts tell me... it's meant to be 'live percussion') or just some
type of percussion jargon I've never heard? Or was poor ailing Thomas
deliriously slipping liver into the conversation..?

The photographs are very beautiful aren't they? My thanks go out to all of
the incredibly talented photographers who worked on these and to Thomas, for
sitting for so many portraits when he might rather have been doing something
else. He's such an extreme professional about his work. The photographs must
have seemed like just another detail of publicity to him - but I'm so
grateful he took the time to do them all. He has such a pure physical beauty,
he belongs in front of the camera.

BTW Lissu, I'm sorry to hear you couldn't get a Headspace hat. When we're 93
and on our cruise to look at Halleys' comet, I'll let you wear mine, okay? :)

Subject: Alloy: Dolby on KFOG

As I was driving to work this morning, just moments ago, I heard Our
Founder being interviewed on the KFOG Morning Show. He gave an impressive
demonstration of the Beatnik Player by using the Interactive Fame on the
David Bowie website. His one comment about making more music was that he
didn't have as much time as he would like to do so.

The kicker, of course, is that the KFOG studio is about a block away from
my office! Sadly, I don't have the time to run over and say hello; but
next time you are in the neighborhood, Thomas, feel free to stop by. :)

Well guys:

Hello and let it be known that Canada Post Came through for me today (April 4th, 1999). I now have in my Hot, Sweaty hands, my copy of Alloy's TFE. Yes, Yes, Yes!!!

You guys Rock, seriously!

First-off, thank-you to /\/\iles & Keith for a job more than well done...
...it's CRISPY! (haha)

Second, Thanks to Thomas for making it all possible by being such an inspiring writer and performer! Cheers to you man. I also want you (Thomas) to know that it is a dream of mine to shake your hand in person and I know it will happen (I get around ;)

Third, What a Freakin' disc set people! The tunes here are enhanced by your interpretations. All of them!

When I compiled A.A.M.B.C. way back when, I was able to hear each song one at a time and think about the sequence etc. It was fun and exciting. But the thrill of listening to Stephen's body of work was a different thrill altogether. WOW (to echo Lissu's message).

So about the songs....

1) greetings- Crackers sorry 'bout the ducking man but it was all manual. I could have put the tunes way back but I was striving to make the greetings part of the tune. I think I came pretty close (but no cigar?... you be the judge.) These were sequenced by Stephen with the exception of my message and the worked beautifully. Did you check the timing of the Sample from Hot sauce (triplet + a 1/4 followed by the whip crack)that follows Sean Cier's line "Here's to talent that never sell's out..."? It was a total accident! I know I didn't have to tell you that but it brings me to the point that sometime's the stars conspire to bring you these little events that make life even more worth living!!! :)

2) Dissidents- Lee, I bow to you and all your greatness! I have a new unsung musical hero! The Duke Nukem theme has been a longtime favorite! It really does get me in the mood to KILL KILL KILL! (jk)

3) Mulu...- Keith, this is very classy. Very Tasteful indeed! What more can I say? A great follow up to #2.

4) I Love you...-Lissu, I echo Crackers! You have a sweet and wonderful voice and believe that if I had the chance to have it on a disc and put it on repeat for three years... I would! (hey, I do now, don't I?)

5) Cruel- Erik your arrangements are magical. Once again your voice (coupled with Rachel's) afford's the tune an adolescent quality that makes this song sound as if it was a dialogue between high-school sweet-hearts. Tres-Bien mon ami.

6) Weightless- I liked Erik's arrangement of this last time. This version is something all it's own. Yet again in perfect sequence! (yay /\/\iles). I don't remember the original of this one but I don't know that I want to hear it again. (no offence intended Thomas :) Way to go.

7) Europa...- Hey crackers...
... you are tooo kind! The Scatted "doodoo doodoo" etc. was done specifically as a response to your comment on the "comb and paper" from last time. Also the switching between baritone and tenor is in response to your Crash-Test Dummies remark. Mary commented on my voice having an Andy Partridge quality to it when I call out "Europa". I was actually trying for the Brando-esque "Stella" quality but XTC-ish is cool too! The second guitar was a quick improvisation but almost pays tribute to Django Reinhardt. (...like I could ever hold a candle to Django- SUUUUUURE!) Thanks for the great comments in the liner notes /\/\iles. I am truly flattered.

8) Don't turn away.- Mary! What a voice! That, and she works with wine. Someone should consider himself very lucky to be your boy!!! Congrats!

9) Hot Sauce- I wanted to do this one Mr. C. but I thought it would be seen as Un-Dolby. I Applaud your choice of this song however, since you killed it so succinctly. I hope you know that I am kidding and truly believe that you are a freak and more deserving of a ton of radio then Barry Manilow or Bea Arthur for darned sure! Way cool. Shall we collaborate some day? I have a car now and Hamilton is only an hour or so..... Whattaya say?

10) Valley...- Lem? What the Hell is this "dreadfull Version" shit? I am haumbled to be on the same disc as you! Marvellous!! I really enjoyed this and it nicely sets up....

11) The Flat Earth - Stephen; All this fine work and you put together another fine version of a Thomas Dolby song. I am standing and Applauding your efforts right....
...then.

Excellent work people. I truly hope that one day we can make these TMDR tributes into a legit disc for sale! It doesn't cost alot to do it (for a thousand discs it may be as little a $60.00 per song for liscening fees!). If each of the contributors were responible for their own liscencing fees and enough Advance copies were sold then it could be done easily and inexpensively! It would be paying tribute to Thomas in one more fashion as well as making these contributions more accessible to many more TMDR fans the world over! Also, It is possible that any extra profits could be made in the name of ALLOY as Charitable donations to the Organization of Thomas' Choosing. This is my hope and dream and a reason why I hold out a contribution for disc #3. I hope that I don't seem stuffy or anything but as an industry type I have to think BIG!!! Know what I mean?

Thank-you all again for the opportunity to put my name and talents along-side your own! You all could be Stars and my prayers and thoughts are with you that your dreams may be realized A.S.A.P.

All my Love to Y'all

Peace,

Ian

P.S. I am yet to hear all the b-sides and will comment later.

I found it a little thin and slightly unpleasant, myself. Have you
played around with it?

I can make appropriate arrangements with Croydon. Call us, even!

Sorry to respond to something that wasn't intentionally sent to the list
(I've made that mistake before too, as have a few others here) but there's a
point that I think needs clarifying. Public appearances of this sort are
probably about as routine to Thomas as his morning cup of coffee & would
probably never cross his mind as something to mention on this mailing list
(if he mentioned them all he'd never be able to stop logging on to this
list!) Besides which, seeing as how many of you in the Bay area have already
attended a live Beatnik demo, it probably wouldn't have occured to him that a
radio presentation of the same would be a point of particular interest. Not
to mention, I don't know how these appearances are scheduled... it's likely
he doesn't know about them very far in advance which would preclude his being
able to mention them here.

My point is, our having Thomas Dolby as a respected member of this list is a
great privilege to all of us & I would never want him to feel that the list
is a burden, Miles. I don't want him to feel like he has to inform us of
every speaking engagement, guest appearance on a radio show, etc for fear
that we might be 'annoyed', when in fact he doesn't need to say ANYTHING to
us if he doesn't want to... he simply does post to us on occasion because he
is considerate of his fans. It would be extremely respectful and
compassionate of you to try to be as understanding toward him as well, and
the pressures he's facing right now with his business schedule. He doesn't
deserve to be criticized or nagged for not doing 'enough' for us when in
reality he has contributed so much, in what little free time he has.

Enough from me for now..
