Mary and I recently acquired another Iki Levy album Thomas worked on, "Lovelorn" (1996). We really like it, had never heard of it until recently, and have it here on our desk with the intention of posting about it to Alloy. Mary figured out the Haza-Levy-Dolby connection on her own and was about to share it. Synchronicity! Terry, could you post publication data about Cathexis? Like Cathexis, Lovelorn has two tracks with co-authorship, and performances by Thomas. In addition, he produced these as well. I like "Illusions" and Mary likes "Indemnity". I guess that's a good deal for us both, eh? This copy of Lovelorn was released in Japan by TDK Records for Maki Music Production, Inc. The catalog number is TDCN 5608. /\/\ilesBob says, "Check it out!" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 02:54:44 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Tilson" Subject: Alloy: For I have seen the Earth, and it is Flat(ery). ANNOUNCING "THE FLATTERY EARTH" Saturday, April 24, 1999 From the desktop of Stephen "/\/\iles" Tilson: Ladies and Gentlemen, Allow me to announce the completion and release of our BDay 2 project, "The Flattery Earth"! WooHoo! Our tribute to Thomas presented on behalf of Alloy in honor of his fortieth birthday has hit the streets. All the packages are shipped out and on their way to the contributors plus one copy for some guy who has something to do with this list's reason for existence . . . I've been keeping the details of TFeryE (this avoids confusion with The Flat Earth (TFE)) off the list so as to avoid dragging the Alloyed at large through all the hoops of the project, and to preserve some element of surprise for Thomas. Well, the cat's been out of the bag for a day or two now and there's no more sense to keeping it quiet. Some of us already have our copies. You may recall that a couple of days ago, and in an off-hand fashion, Beth Meyer mentioned a recent gathering of the Colorado Alloy Contingent. This was a hush-hush pre-release party for TFeryE attended by JAMac, Keith, Erik, and their host, Beth. (I heard that besides listening to the recording, and collecting their copies of TFeryE, part of the party concerned eating a cake that was a perfect replica of the one featured in the graphics.) Mary and I have our copies, and I heard that two of the mailed copies were delivered today. Thomas should receive his copy Monday, or the next time he's in his office thereafter. The rest of the contributors should have their copies by the first of May, or sooner. I believe that Keith is working up a Flattery Earth webpage where you will be able to hear our efforts in RealAudio format and see the graphics. But give him time - he's likely still recovering from the marathon finish he gave us, what with duplicating all the discs AND designing and printing all the documentation to my nit-picky tweak- tweak-tweaker's standards in just under three weeks. As producer of TFeryE I owe Keith a lot of gratitude for his hard work. Thank you, Mr. Stansell! If you would like to see and hear these things for yourself, you will eventually be able to visit: http://Keith.Stansell.com/flattery.htm If after visiting Keith's page you are inspired to contribute to this year's BDay 3 project, visit Russell Milliner's site, http://www.iag.net/~milliner/tmdr/signup.html and sign up for a song, offer a title suggestion, or anything else that suits your fancy. In case you missed it earlier, I have created a BDay project backgrounder and FAQ that I will happily repost upon request. May The Cube Be With Us All, /\/\iles ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 03:07:20 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Cracknell Subject: Alloy: Project B-day III Well gang, Project B-Day ][ is now officially a wrap. The tribute should be in Thomas' hands early next week. Woohoo! Better really freaking late than never, eh? Anyways, perhaps we could have a reposting of the Dibbs for project B-Day III to the list. So who is going to be compiling B-Day III and shipping the finished product out? I just want to remind everyone to record your submissions whenever you find the time. Don't put it off, time will run out faster than you think. I stumbled upon it totally by accident and all the the info I have came from http:www.cdzone.co.uk and they managed to get the artist name wrong (Revy Iki - Iki Levy). If memory serves there was a catalogue number on the search result, so it might be worth taking a second visit. I'll check it out and post back. Probably not going to be of much use I'm afraid... TDCN560B ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 17:05:01 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Iki Levy-Ofra Haza-Thomas Dolby Terry and Crew, I just spent about 40 minutes on the web searching for more information about Iki Levy. The only sites that had ANY information that I could find (before my patience ran out) is the aforementioned cdzone.co.uk and the All-Music Guide (allmusic.com). The All-Music Guide had a pretty extensive listing for the artist Iki Levy as a side man, but no mention of either "Cathexis" or "Lovelorn" or any other solo projects. Interestingly, Iki worked on some other TMDR projects: The Gate..., and "We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story" in addition to Ofra Haza's "Desert Wind". The information at CDzone (or lack thereof) inclines me to believe that Lovelorn and Cathexis are in fact the same recording (the titles *are* somewhat related). Along with clearly misspelling the artist's name as Iki "Revy", CDzone lists the catalog number as TDCN 560B. The catalog number for Lovelorn is TDCN 5608. Seems like a gigo situation to me. Conclusion: Terry, jump on that CD! I couldn't find another one anywhere. It is quite good, especially if you like world music. I find the recording reminiscent of The Gate to The Mind's Eye, Peter Gabriel and the Real World catalog in general, Nana Vasconcelos, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, and Andreas Vollenweider. This would make great material for jazz dance. Re-searchingly yours, /\/\iles I found no listings for the CD I own, "Lovelorn". ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 17:05:04 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Perhaps the quality of the finished work will exhonorate me - somewhat . . . ********************************************************************* Hello Dears, /\/\iles here with the background on, and an update for our current Project BDay - number three! Since there are more than a few new voices in our wilderness let me restate the premise and intent of this project, and encourage you to participate in this year's tribute. For the past two years the musicians and other well-wishers of Alloy have endeavored to honor Mr. Dolby by creating a tribute recording to commemorate his current birthday, which falls on October 14th. The previous two recordings, "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake" and "The Flattery Earth" took the general form of audio birthday greetings from various members of Alloy mixed over background music followed by covers of TMDR songs submitted by those of us brave enough to do so. With "The Flattery Earth" we added the enhancement of "b-sides": Those who submit Dolby covers may also submit another song, preferably original, to be included after the cover songs. The Project BDay concept originates from the days of "The Tap Room", a threaded bulletin board on Thomas Dolby's Flat Earth Society website. If my historical reference is accurate this idea was first suggested by JAMac (Dennis Alexander). The Flat Earth website "Tap Room" eventually died and the project was inherited by Alloy in time for the first recording "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake" (AAMBC). Ian Gifford, formerly of Alloy but still in touch, compiled, mastered, and produced that recording, and duplicated it to cassette. Crackers (Chris Cracknell) produced the artwork and j-card. This was all done for the cost of materials and shipping only. One copy was sent to each participant and one copy was hand delivered by a group of lucky Alloy members to Mr. Dolby. There is a photograph of that not-yet-world-famous event posted at Paul Baily's website, http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb/onlocation.html Last year's project, "The Flattery Earth" (TFeryE), was compiled, mastered, and produced by myself. Duplication and artwork were handled by Keith Stansell. For the past few months I have been running a TFE "mini-list" to keep participants abreast of developments, and to preserve an element of surprise for Thomas, who frequents Alloy. For those of Alloy who did not participate last year you will be able to hear scaled down versions of the majority of our work at Keith Stansell's TFE website, http://Keith.Stansell.com/flattery.htm sometime after the recording goes to press. It may be that we cannot post all of the songs simultaneously due to space limitations, or possibly in one case, copyright restrictions, but there will be something to sink your ears into. There is a similar site for the AAMBC project, also courtesy of Keith: http://www.concentric.net/~kasman/aambc.html Again I would like to encourage everyone to participate in this year's tribute. The audio greetings are a free for all, with the only restriction being a length of 30 seconds or less, while songs are selected on a dibs basis: if someone else hasn't already claimed it, any TMDR composition or cover may be selected. Roughly speaking, we need the songs and greetings turned in no later than September 1st in order to complete and deliver the recording by October 14, 1999 (TMDR's 41st birthday). You may submit your recordings in any format acceptable to the as yet un-named producer. I note Peter Fitzpatrick has generously offered to help produce this year's tribute. Thanks, Peter! Let's get together on this and see what can be arranged. Recently Crackers wrote: > Could someone please repost the URL for the Project B-Day III > webpage?
