Not that it'll be much help, though I was in a similar situation just over a year ago. I found myself seriously underemployed (read: unemployed, with the odd job) for nearly two years, barely scraping a living. Luckily I had savings bonds that I cashed in slowly during that period but I ran out rather quickly. Credit cards, in my case, saved me because I was able to borrow money I needed to buy groceries and pay the rent! I don't like to use credit so I was never maxed out--until this dark period in my life, and only because i was at the end of my rope. I don't know how it happened but, perhaps becasue I was desperate with nothing to lose, I jumped at every seemlingly unlikely employment opportunity. This resulted in two offers, one of which I accepted. And this job payed twice what I was making before! Within two months my credit was paid off and I'm finally catching up on other things I've neglected over the the past two years. My message is: don't give up! In fact, go the other way...look fior work like you never did before and even go for the jobs you don't think you'd get. You never know. I may be one of the luckier few that doesn't like to rely on cards. Sure I use them, especially for long distance transactions and the like. Some say that the reason credit cards are a problem because it's painless, unlike when you are forced to give up a wad of cold, green cash between your fingers. ;-) I wish you well and hope you'll find your way out. I think everyone here in Alloyland feels the same. Maybe someone else might have some more useful advice than I! - --omega ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 14:06:13 -0700 From: Peter Fitzpatrick Subject: RE: Alloy: AAAAAAUUUGGGGGHHHHHhhhhh!!!! I'm possibly the worst person to give advice but for what it's worth : locate your local Credit Union, tell them *everything*. They *can* and will help. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE : *think twice* about declaring bankruptcy : It will follow you forever. I know that right now you want something to make it all go away, but declaring yourself bankrupt will make it much much worse - it will all go away to be replaced with something else that you can't make go away. Yes : avoid credit cards like the plague. 5 Years ago we had two gold visa cards. 3 years ago we didn't. 'nuff said. Check the APR rates : it may be less costly to run a bank checking account overdraft (at least I think they're called that in the USA). Get Help. Get it *now*. Do it before it gets bad enough to impact on your health and your relationship. These people can help you deal with your creditors and when your creditors see that you're serious about sorting out your financial situation they will (almost without exception) work *with* you rather than against you. I truly hope it gets sorted out for you. - -Peter ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V4 #111 ***************************
