Sorry in advance for taking the bait,...don't feel you need to read this answer,....warning!!...Political/Historical! Please also forgive me if I've read this the wrong way,.... . . . I think the UK government are not much better or worse than the next one,.....(what can we expect when bloody politicians run these places!!) I have to admit though, that I felt a bit stung by the mail below,...funny, considering I've been living abroad for 7 years now,...... Even though I think that our British politicians suck like everyone elses, and that I haven't liked ANY of the governments irregardless of their politics in the last 15 years, I wouldn't mix up the UKs "empire" history of two generations ago with how things are now. That generation and it's ideas are long gone. It's a common misconception, I've noticed, over here in Finland and elsewhere, to assume that the "empire" attitudes of the UK in the last century are alive and well in our generation. They are most definately not. I don't think that the UK government would dare to have much in the way of those kind of attitudes anymore,...at least I think that's the case. Hell, you hardly even see a Union Jack these days! I feel that both government & people are afraid of an outward show of patriotism in the UK nowadays, maybe because of the past. I'd also say that our government has maybe learned a few lessons from that period of history,....and that there are governments around the world treating people far worse now that the UK is (i.e. the top news story at the moment, etc.),......of course it seems silly that I'm defending my own government when I dislike a lot of what they do,...not to mention that I always vote green (very unfashionable in the UK!) which is virtually unrepresented in the UK government,...but after all, the UK people vote them in,...so what can I say? If you criticise the UK government nowadays, I suppose it's criticising the UK people too,......I know a lot of people are stupid,...but,... well,....it hurt a bit that you said that. Sorry to bite back! Anyway,..I'm feeling particularily unclear in my writing today,...and I promise not to write one more jot about Politics (YAK!)! On a different slant,...if any of you out there are keen greenies, mail me,..I have a good friend who works as an anthropologist in Papua New Guinea, who has recently heard how the government there are going back on their word, and will destroy 800,000 hectacres of rain forest, not to mention the lives of the tribes he's been working with. If anyone is keen to help, do a bit of lobbying, or letter writing, just send me a mail privately! okay,..back to work now!! Lissu :-) P.S. The emerald forest is one of my favourite's,....a great film. > -----Original Message----- > From: Kathleen Truelove [SMTP:Kathleen.McClelland@online.disney.com] > Sent: Wednesday, April 07, 1999 12:07 AM > To: alloy@smoe.org > Cc: Stephen_Tilson@compuserve.com > Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: TFE: The Flattery Earth Newsletter #5 > > > Hats off to Dolby to write song about such an inspirational story.
