[Kathleen Truelove Subject: Alloy: RE: alloy-digest V4 #92, #91 Hello everyone... >To my amazement I've found that Dolby is mathematically perfect from the waist up! Wow, that's a darn good compliment for a man... just as well it was only from the waist up... any more would result in lethal head-swell. - ----------- Well Rob, I had a peek at http://members.aol.com/rthurf/robslist.htm your Dolby collection and I'm impressed. Jealous even. But relieved to see there's not much I haven't actually heard myself. My own list will be on the web just as soon as my new PC is well enough to go home. (I'm not writing it all here at work) My SBLive soundcard STILL won't work properly. *Tut* Is there any way I can get to hear the other version of Radio Silence. Anyone? - --------- My collection of Dolby has, over the years, been greatly assisted by a second-hand record shop called Music and Video Exchange. Now... I thought this was unique to Jersey but apparently there's loads of them around the UK. How did I find out? Well... (the recent mentions of Talk Talk reminded me of this) when I bought the Talk Talk Asides and Besides album I was looking through the "booklet" (for want of a better word - it's too early in the morning) and there were pictures of various single covers. Imagine my amusement when one of the record covers was seen to sport a Music and Video Exchange price sticker! Discussions with workmates (who travel more than I do) revealed that it probably wasn't bought over here... you live and learn! - -------- Right then... I think I should pop along to the local friendly CD shop and get them to type "Dolby, Thomas" into their computer. I feel the need to order ALL the stuff I haven't already got. Has to be done, doesn't it? Luckily for me (re the new compilation album at HMV) there's a new outlet of HMV opening over here this week. Yeeha. - --------- Back to work then... some ****** has installed the development system for our firm's new product on my PC, so now I've no excuse not to look at the new code. Darn. There was me having an easy ride looking after the old, stable product and now it's time for hard work. I've got to abandon my old Pascal way-of-thinking and slum it with MS-Visual Basic. *sob* Windows? Pah... long live DOS... mmmm, command lines... (sound of distraught programmer breaking under the strain) NOooOOOooOOoo ... don't drag me kicking and screaming out of the 1980s!!! Toodle pip, back to lurk-mode for a few years... +Andy+ At least I can listen to CDs at work.. that's nice. Today I shall be mostly listening to Gate to the Mind's Eye. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 09:57:01 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: Dolby at NY Conference on Artists' Rights Here's some news I've just received about a conference Thomas will be participating in next month. In addition to the chance of getting to hear Mr Dolby speak about this issue, a close friend of ours works at Lucent Technologies & could hopefully show us some of the ropes beforehand. I'm going to try to attend this one, we'll see! Robin T New York Chapter of the Recording Academy Presents Downloadable Music: Liberation or Exploitation Conference on April 24 Exploring The Music Industry's Most Controversial Issue NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--March 24, 1999-- Event Features Creative and Technology Leaders Including Recording Artist Thomas Dolby, Representatives from RIAA, Performing Rights Organizations and Mp3.com's Michael Robertson The New York Chapter of the Recording Academy(R) announced that recording artist Thomas Dolby and technology pioneer Michael Robertson of MP3 will be among the participants in a day-long conference it is presenting on downloadable music. The capability of music fans to purchase and download music from the Internet on a song by song basis directly to their computer's hard drive and then to recordable CD players or other media has created concerns and opportunities for the recording industry. This rapidly developing technology has already changed the way recording professionals and the public perceive and purchase recorded music. The dramatic impact of this technology has created a storm of controversy and uncertainty. This conference will present the most up-to-the-minute look at all of the major cutting edge technological, creative and legal issues surrounding this most contentious subject. The New York Chapter will present a full-day exploration of all of the key issues surrounding downloadable Internet music. Speakers will come from the creative community, label representatives, experts on copyright issues and the technology leaders who are creating and marketing the hardware and software that are rocking the foundations of the music industry. Key corporate leaders will be on the panels including representatives from ASCAP, BMI, IBM, Lucent Technologies and the R.I.A.A. The conference is sponsored by ASCAP and BMI along with Liquid Audio, Lucent Technologies, AT&T's a2b music and IUMA. The conference will take place on Saturday, April 24, starting at 11 a.m. at Webster Hall (125 East Eleventh Street in New York). Advance admission is $15 for Recording Academy members and students and $25 for non-members and can be purchased by calling 212/245-5440 ext. 360, by fax at 212/489-0394 or e-mail to newyork@grammy.com. Most major credit cards are accepted. Registrations the day of the event are available for $20 (Academy members) and $25 (non-members). Tony Visconti, New York Chapter president, commented that "As a record producer myself, I have been more and more involved with the Internet. What makes this conference special is that, for the first time in New York, all the major players will be here to look at all sides of issues such as technological options, copyright protection and marketing opportunities for the creators and consumers of music." The event is part of the New York Chapter's Millennium Technology series which will include similar conferences on DVD in June and Home Studio Projects in September.
