Dear all, Thanks to assistance from my glamourous assistants Lissu and Robin a basic list of my TMDR related stuff is available for view. None for sale I am afraid but I thought people might like to have a nosey !! any comments...... Although there's a common thread through all TT work - the big arching achingly wonderful tunes, I find that the more difficult later stuff, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, are the most rewarding, followed by the acoustic monster Colour Of Spring, and the early It's My Life, on which the guys did as much for the synth as TMDR has. Even their juvenilia, 82's The Party's Over, has a couple of outstanding songs. As a TMDR reference, did anyone else see Thomas on the Megalab? My friend Jos phoned me up to say he was on TV, but I doubt my frantic e-mail got through fast enough. I was out playing in my new band last night - I'm on bass, because no one seems to need guitarist in London. However, I joined them sight unseen, and their songs aren't exactly too wonderful, but at least it gets me out the house.... the_copse ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 09:46:25 +0000 From: Tim_Dunn.JBA_HEATHROW.SPL_EXTERNAL@jba.co.uk Subject: RE: Alloy: playing at headspace ? Hi all and thanks for the track list Trevor. Pity there weren't any of the more obscure Dolby tracks on the Hyperactive CD (Growth/Therapy or Urban Tribal spring to mind). Ah well... It might not be of interest to all, but as Trevor asked for some background on my 'connection' with TMDR, I thought I'd put pen to paper in a manner of speaking. I first happened across Thomas Dolby's work back in '83 whilst in college. A very good freind of mine had returned from a visit to Saudi with a truck load of poorly recorded pirate cassettes, one of which was "Wireless" (minus The Golden Age of) by TMDR. Interestingly it contained the rock guitar version of Radio Silence, although naturally I wasn't aware of it's significance at the time. Needless to say I was hooked and from that point on I tracked down and bought any and all music which bore TMDR's name. The Flat Earth remains not just my favourite Dolby album, but my all time No.1 generally and it's with some pride that I take the blame for the album becoming something of a seminal classic in the summer of '84 in my home town of Benfleet. It seemed as if every home had a copy, it was pure bliss. Like most of you in this group I suspect, I can say that TMDR's music has been the soundtrack to my life with most of his single and album releases coming at key points in my life. Over the years I've done my level best to complete my Dolby collection with the only holes being the REALLY obscure Low Noise and Bruce Woolley tracks. I hope to fill those gap one day, but I also hope that if I can't physically get copies of the original vinyl then perhaps I can at least get to hear them in some form or another via this foum. In closing my only frustration with Thomas Dolby over the years has been the excrutiating wait for new material from the man. Needless to say, his interests in Headspace (whilst certainly capturing my imagination as an Intr anet-designer) have caused me real concern as a fan of his music. I now fear that we've heard the last of Thomas Dolby the artist/producer, unless of course someone else can tell me otherwise. Thanks for your time folks, and I look forward to speaking with you all again soon.
