Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Obsidian - soundtrack by TMDR and Headspace A couple of months back Europa wrote about the game "Obsidian" for which TMDR and Headspace produced the music and sound effects. I am writing to encourage those of us who enjoy a good Myst-like adventure (I know you're out there, you closet-gamers) to find yourself a copy before it slips into obscurity (published 1996). The music and sound effects are great, the puzzles are challenging and rewarding to solve, the visuals are intricate, and in many instances quite stunning. There is also plenty of humor for those with an eye for it and the background to support it. For instance (and Keith S. (our resident "Brazil" expert) take note), the first phase of the game takes place in an impossible bureaucracy which is *clearly* influenced by the seminal movie "Brazil". This Bureau is a little more light hearted than the one in "Brazil", but if you know the movie you'll soon see how much the game designers owe Terry Gilliam and company (Mr. Gilliam conceived and directed "Brazil"). I saw the movie for the first time after playing the game and it didn't take long to make the connection . . . The premise of "Obsidian" is human versus machine intelligence, and there is, of course, a message in the madness. I've seen a few copies come around on eBay and it is apparently still available new from a few vendors online. You may wish to acquire the "hint" book to help you through the more difficult puzzles, that is unless you have a lot of time on your hands. "Obsidian" comes in two versions: PC (Windows compatible) and MAC. The PC version comes on a set of 5 CDs. There are no guns, rocket-propelled grenades, or other implements of destruction required. And of course there is the lovely music and sound effects by our esteemed object of affection and company . . . Happy gaming, /\/\iles P.S. Robin - didn't you acquire a copy of "The Dark Eye" - the E. A. Poe based game with soundtrack by TMDR and Headspace? I replied by adding that the phonetic alphabet (you know: A=alpha, B=bravo, C=charlie, etc.) used in the radio communications voice-overs for the song were incorrect as well. Andy replied privately: >> The phonetic alphabet used in "The Wreck of the Fairchild" is >> also incorrect . . . > Wow! You got me there! Are you sure? I'm a radio ham myself > (GJ7JHF), so I don't know how I'd have missed that... could you > supply the details? :-) Certainly. During the ensuing weeks I listened to the track and noticed two things. As indicated above the phonetic alphabet is incorrect, and the air-ground communications are in Spanish. This is wrong and here's the reasoning. The international language of pilots and air traffic controllers is English, period, the end. (That's right, Virginia. Even in Swaziland, or Seoul.) The phonetic alphabet used in these communications is also standardized (makes sense, huh?). For those of us not in the know about such issues, a pilot or controller will never say "class B airspace" (read as class "bee" airspace), or "aircraft XYZ - report your position". No, the correct and required way to say this is "class Bravo airspace" or "aircraft X-ray Yankee Zulu - report your position". So when the "controller" in TWotF is frantically trying to raise the Fairchild on the radio he says, "Whisky Zulu Torre - Whisky Zulu Torre", etc. The correct way to say this would be Whisky Zulu TANGO. Now I know Andy told us (and demonstrated with his mangled lyric quotes ) he's not the obsessive type, but Andy, you *did* ask. ;-) Further, let me cover my butt by saying I'm fairly certain that the rules are stretched in countries where English is a second language, but in the context of the subject matter of the song (international airtravel) there should be no deviation from these conventions. When it first arrived we went through it a little, and I LIKED what I saw & heard (this is a game starring Dolby's music, written by Russell Lees, inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe, with voice work provided by William S. We all made it out of India alive.Logan is doing well after the monkey bite. Only two more rabis shots to go and he's holding up like a trooper. Dubai is very nice, at this time of the year the climate is very balmy, not too hot, not too cold. We went to the beach today and played in the surf. It was neat seeing wild monkeys in India and it is cool seeing wild camels here. I'll have to snap a picture of a "camel crossing" sign before I leave. I'll be in england on the 15th of march and heading back to Canada on the 16th. I'll give the alloyites who sent me their phone numbers a call as sometime early on the 15th and hopefully we'll be able to get together that night somewhere. Somepeople might be getting a trip update for the first time with this message as I noticed when I logged on today that I had made some typos in some of the email addresses. The internet connection in India was so bad that I couldn't see what I was typing it took so long for the letters to come up on the screen. The connection here in dubai isn't much better. The web server here is heavily censored. I couldn't even access my own webpage, but I don't know if that's because of the poor internet access here or if somethng on my webpage was tripping a censor. Anyways I'm having a great time here. It's nice to be able to eat some western food again for a change. Curry morning noon and night gets a little boring when you're used to living in a country where you can get any type of food any time you want. I've taken a tonne of pictures and it will likely cost me a small fortune to get them all developed. My e-mail box was full to the limit when I logged on today so I deleted almost all of my e-mail unread. I'll ask for someone on Alloy to post me a condensed version of what has transpired since I left canada when I get back. Well i should head off now for the shower. I smell slightly of dead fish from swimming in the ocean. I'll send a more detailed post about my adventures in India and the middle east when I get back to canada (and have readjusted to Canadian time). I can play "love is the 5th horseman" over and over...the last 15 years I have probably played them WAY more than Thomas Dolby, XTC, Cure put together. (rapid gunfire, ouch '-)WHY? Who knows...my daughter loves them too and she's 14. BUT I think there are at least 1 or 2 songs on each CD I don't like at all. I figured my boyfriend would HATE them so I started him on TWO WHEELS GOOD (steve mcqueen in the uk) he was hooked on the first listen, he'd never heard anything remotely like it and enjoyed the change of pace. He bought a copy of it even, then he even loved FROM LANGLEY PARK TO MEMPHIS. Then he tells me he bought JORDAN THE COMEBACK and I said OH NO that is really for prefab die hard fans, most people would not listen to it 10 times before making a decision. He loves it too. (I was shocked) THIS is a guy who wears black lipstick, eyeliner and black fingernail polish when we go dancing. His collection is Bauhaus, sisters of mercy, cure,. so go figure. For me it's a combination of unbelievably thick complex melodies, PRODUCTION (Dolby) and I think the lyrics hit me perfect because it feels like he has lived my life. Anyone know what I mean there? There have been times in my life where more than 30 of their songs would make me sit down and cry like a baby. "Elegance" off Swoon at least, world awake, life of surprises off protest songs...ALL of 2 wheels...knock on wood, the golden calf off Langley park, all of that one is like poetry to me!? I AM the biggest prefab fanatic I know of. I get their email newsletters, called their kitchenware studio, upontyne in England.(for copyright info) and only one band;Clan of Xymox could I say I love as much, if not more. Defensive? No it's NOT that, it's just we all don't HEAR the same things when we hear music and it is SO interesting to me. My two Blinded By Science EP's are dangerously worn out and I fear the worst. And while I do have several copies of TGAOW on CD, the album edit of that song doesn't do it justice. >> Welcome Jon! I hope to have some good links for hard-to-find recorded work compiled on my website soon, in the meantime keep checking out sites like eBay... you never know when you'll strike gold there. 'One of our Submarines' is a great, scary song & I've always loved it too! My husband wanted me to get a tattoo on my head when I was wearing it in> a mohawk years ago, but I knew it'd be too painful. ======= Oh what an experience, not just that your skull is right beneath the skin but you actually feel your brain shaking inside. I had to concentrate on breathing like when you're giving birth!(sorry guys I know you can relate)I held my hands tight together and they were wringing wet after the nearly 2 hours. But the difference with "controlled" pain I think is you know you can say STOP. I think I had a headache for a while...duh Another paradox; I can't even LOOK at a needle for a bloodtest but the "short" tattoo needles don't bug me.???? Maybe Freud would clear that up for me...not... there's a photo of the main page of...http://www.darkpoet.net If you wish to see such a sight! I like it when someone says "why did you do that? I think people who stare at it are either admiring it (and might be too shy to say so) or they just don't get out of the house a lot & aren't sure how to react. I've had some odd comments on mine, depending on who I'm dealing with. The occasional skittish passerby will misguidedly ask if my wrist tattoo is 'satanic'!! (when in actual fact, it's really the name of the Archangel Gabriel... can't get less satanic than that, folks... and scripted from an ancient Hebrew mystical text which is made up of unpronounceable symbols) It's kind of a mouthful to explain to, say, the clerk at the local convenience store... so I've been thinking of having some informational cards made up that I can hand out to those who ask. Think of the time & confusion it would save :) The worst was when the guy who was cutting my hair at Costcutters asked about it. I explained... and he inexplicably replied, "oooh, I knew it was Egyptian! Can you *levitate*?" Of course, I became very frightened (I had a confirmed lunatic hairdresser aiming a pair of sharp scissors at my head!) & managed to escape by just talking him down calmly for half an hour as he snipped... I wonder if Thomas has any tattoos?
