We just got a DVD player a few weeks ago,...one of the main reasons being the difficulty of getting hold of rarer films etc. in this "low choice" market we live in up here (it affects everything but computer parts, which tells you a lot about the amount of engineers in Finland!), and the other being that its an easy way for us to see films that don't make it into the cinema here (for example, I remember last year , Event Horizon was never shown in the cinemas here because a slightly similar film, "Sphere" was) by ordering them from other countries. Debrah - thanks for the character reference, hehe. I've been looking at your web-site... wow! Thank you /\/\iles... Lichaem... two comments... 1) Hmmm... and 2) Thanks... in that order! Robin - hi - you'll find my introduction and "How I found The Way of Dolby" in an earlier digest... somewhere around 60. Was Thomas ever in a silly vampire movie? I can't find my video tape with it on and I'm begining to wonder if I dreamt it! I have a video recording from back in the 1980's featuring The Great One who was a guest on a pop-jury sort of show. Three guests had to watch new pop videos and then hit big red buttons on top of the telly when they'd seen enough. They then passed judgement (with an e, Debs) on the music/videography. Very entertaining, I miss it. Anyway, Thomas made a few comments about his love of bulldozers (earth-movers, diggers, JCBs, in case that confuses those overseas). Maybe one day I'll be able to "capture" the video or record the audio to MP3 for you all. Bye for now... got to pop out, I'll get to read the rest of #70, and digest 71 later! +Andy+ P.S. I'd love to hear The Police cover Commercial Breakup ... only I reckon the song itself is a bit monotonous.. maybe they could enhance it a little. Maybe that's a topic for discussion... what's your LEAST favourite TD song?! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 02:30:28 -0800 From: Robyn Moore Subject: Re: Alloy: replies At 12:46 AM 3/4/99 , you wrote: >Was Thomas ever in a silly vampire movie? She did, but a biscuit solved the problem. "Off-Topic" isn't such a problem now, is it?! Mary.. thanks - I'm not sure about this e-bay thing, being a European-ish... I'll have to investigate ways of getting hold of these rarities. And yes, the tinnitus is extremely upsetting for someone like me who LIVES for music (I find I actually get depressed if I go for more than 3 or 4 days without listening to good music - I mean really getting INTO the music, not just it being there in the background. Retrospectacle lives in (or close to) my PC's CD drive here at work for that reason - Leipzig/Submarines/Hyperactive/I scare myself/Flat Earth/Pulp Culture/Cruel/NoCigar and of course luv-ya...bye all keep me nearly sane). That's it! That explains my Monday morning outburst! And today I'm happy because I had my weekly dose of radio-studio/"Chance to Shine" last night, at Hospital Radio Lions. I don't know what caused the tinnitus ( or TinTin-itus as a friend of mine once called it, and we'll never let him forget it, hehe) - I've never been a regular at loud pubs/clubs, I've always tried to avoid loud noise, but maybe I did listen to my music just a little too loud in my teens. Or maybe it's the constant fan-noise from all these PC's here at work? I don't know - it's only noticeable at night really when trying to sleep. It's as if there's a TV on nearby all the time - that high pitched noise from the 15kHz flyback, but lets not get too technical... I've found the Names To Faces web-page... what ("Genuine mode" ON) a good looking bunch of people you all are! Me, well look at http://www.finalysys.com/users/radio/bah/ajv7ko98.jpg if you dare! (beware it looks squashed and narrow on my 640x480 screen, but OK on my 1024x768 one - - Lord knows why - oh the joys of Microsh** software, IE4) The digests site is handy too, that'll give me plenty to read... I've gone back to about #38 so far... I can appreciate the flavour of this list more now. I really am SO sorry I was too hasty - I just didn't know a digest format was available, and my flooded in-box ticked me right off. I KNEW I should have used an anonymous Hotmail account, hehe. Does anyone know if Thomas made any music that never got released? i.e. fully recorded and mixed tracks that got dropped from albums for any reason? The chance of commercial release for such music (along with rarities) is unfortunately slimmer than an anorexic stick insect, but maybe the impending era of direct music-purchase via MP3 (or whatever) will REALLY make my day - if it ever allows me to audition and then buy single tracks, any track, straight from the musician. I live in hope. Darn, I've got work to attend to (the life of a programmer is never dull... err... hang on, yes - yes it is. Ooops) and I haven't even read digest 71 yet :-) Be well, +Andy+ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 11:11:28 -0000 From: Andy Venables Subject: Alloy: Oh no!!! err... ("Trust me, I'm a DJ" - one of my favourite self-mocking phrases). All this trouble I've caused - I REALLY didn't want to - I simply quite naively wanted to express my disappointment and let you all know why I was going - I believe in communicating and thought it might be more interesting than simply slipping away. One more item to add to my Regrets list.. it's growing a little large now :-) I'm shortly going to write privately to Melissa to try and persuade her back. Maybe I shouldn't get involved but I feel I ought to. Darn, I hate myself now. I've been looking back at the troubled digests #66 to #69 to see what on the Flat Earth she said that was so bad. Bad enough to prompt whichever sad individual to resort to real offensiveness. I didn't find anything. She may have been amongst the ladies that objected to my message (the most understanding messages seem to have come from gentlemen funnily enough - not that I'm usually sexist but I do find that interesting - if anything I'm usually more anti-my-fellow-men, not being the warmongering football type myself) but I had no reason to single her or anyone else out. If I remember rightly the only messages I sent direct were copies of those sent to the list - although I had been unsubscribed at that point! (I did think twice about making that sexist comment but I've this strange compulsion towards honesty and speaking my mind) I can't tell you how much I want to put this whole sorry business behind me, and I hope you believe my Truth. Melissa received that insulting anonymous letter (don't worry Andy we know it wasn't you!), along with some things others were saying which just made her feel inclined to no longer participate. A brief bio on Melissa: she is in her 30's, fluent in five (?) languages including Russian, where she's spent much of her professional life helping communities through Goodwill & now as a representative of the US government. She is a skilled craftsperson & makes wonderful clothes, and owns her own small business. She is also a serious world-class writer & her work has more than impressed everyone here, especially her colorful & sensitive travel journals which I cherish. Melissa has a real way of connecting with people & describing the events she sees. On our encouragement, she's working on being published by a few different magazines right now. For the last few months she's been looking for a new position in Washington DC (having resigned from Goodwill due to internal politics problems) At literally the very last moment before she would have to move (last week!) , she landed two job interviews, both for contracts helping communities become re- established in Russian provinces. She chose the best one of the two, and her first day was this Monday... when Alloy ran into problems. Being attacked by a very rude anonymous jackass in the privacy of her own home from a list she'd come to trust as a refuge from worldly troubles, along with the other random turmoil, was more than she wanted to deal with. Especially after everything else she'd just been through. Maybe it would help if folks here very politely asked her to return, maybe it wouldn't... she seems to have her mind made up that it's time to move on in life, away from Alloy. Still, it couldn't hurt to try. I know I'll be writing to see how she's doing, & I'll try to bring back some good word. Meanwhile try not to worry. It's an internet radio station which works in conjunction with an online CD store so you can buy what you hear. The modern rock channel has a New Wave sub channel that has really been bringing back some memories. I have a feeling most of you will like the station. Right now they are playing a mix of Situation by Yaz that I've never heard before. Also, I checked out the CD Point page that it connects to. They have the new XTC CD, and you can also buy an import of Aliens Ate My Buick at a reasonable price. Their server seems to be down at this moment, so try again later if you can't connect. Sorry if this sounds like an advertisement (I swear this is an unpaid endorsement) but I just thought you'd like to know. - -Keith Stansell ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Mar 1999 01:28:03 +0000 From: "I T Admin @ Govt Office North West" Subject: Alloy: Slarvibarglhee - the bio V3.0 Oooh, er missus, deja vu again. Hang on a mo, it isn't deja vu, I DID do this three years ago, and then again two years ago so I can amend the last copy and send it out again. So, here it is, everything you never wanted to know about Slarvibarglhee and probably a lot more besides. I'm 45 at the moment, married with one wife and two kids (a son, 20 and a daughter, 18) a dog, a cat and a variable number of cold water fish. I work for the Government Office for the North West (GONW), in Manchester (UK) as IT Administrator, Helpdesk Operator, IT trainer, PC/printer technician/installer (very basic) and office manager, looking after around 300 IT users (in what used to be the North West Regional Office of the Department of Employment until we merged with the Regional Offices of the Departments of Trade and Industry, Environment, and Transport about three years ago and became GONW). I've ALWAYS worked for "the department" having taken a temporary job at Openshaw Unemployment Benefit Office when I left school at 18, and never left. Since then, I've worked in employment offices, training admin offices, as an accounts supervisor, a training officer, an open learning development officer, and have been doing my current job since 1990. This is the best job I've ever had, though the training job came a close second. Promotion prospects are now poor in the civil service so I have no great ambition to get into senior management. My son's into all kinds of music, but mainly metal, and is learning rock guitar. He's currently trying to buy his first house. My daughter prefers pop and is heavily into amateur dramatics. My wife likes Simply Red and we often used to see Mick Hucknall shopping in Safeways or riding his mountain bike, as used to have a house about a mile from us. John Squire (ex Stone Roses, now guitarist with The Sea Horses) used to live next door, and we used to look after his house and feed his cats when he and his girlfriend were away, and I even had to jump start his Merc one cold winter morning. He once cleaned our kitchen after causing it to be filled with plaster dust when he was doing alterations to HIS kitchen. I like many types of music, being and ex-hippie and flower child......, well "ex" is only as far as my appearance is concerned, inside I'm still the beautiful person I was at 18, or at least *I* think I am. I like old "progressive" rock music and lots of other stuff as well (Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, John Martyn, Steve Hackett, Brand X, TMDR [of course], CSN&Y, Crazy Horse, Neil Young, The Incredible String Band, Procul Harum, Clannad, Camel, Led Zeppelin, Fairport Convention, Roxy Music, The Beatles, Bruce Hornsby, King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Scritti Politti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sting, Tears For Fears, Judy Tzuke, and many, many more) My most recent discovery is Ozric Tentacles and I' working my way through their back catalogue. I like to read Tolkien, Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchet, Spike Milligan and lots of other sc-fi, fantasy and humour. When they're shhowing, I like to watch Frasier, Friends, X Files, Monty Python, Billy Connolly, American Gothic, Due South, Northern Exposure, Cracker, Prime Suspect (these last two are filmed in my area, so my wife and I like to play "Spot the Location" when they're on), almost ANY old black and white films, in fact almost ANY films at all, though I do like sci-fi best of all, even crappy old films with terribly amateurish special effects, not very frightening (e.g. Hammer) horror films, and science/new technology documentaries. I used to be a keen cyclist and I still cycle to work every day, despite having a nine year old Datsun, though it's known as a Nissan over here, and in fact only started driving out of necessity when I was 27 in order to ferry the family around. I used to swim a lot, and did karate for a few years, till the injuries became too much and I gave it up. I'd just starting to delve into astronomy, but the seeing isn't too good in Manchester, and I don't have the spare cash for a decent telescope, so it's a bit tricky. I started playing acoustic guitar when I was 10, played bass in a band briefly when I was 17, but couldn't tell you the name of a single chord that I can play. I don't play much these days, much to my regret, but there never seems to be enough time to do everything I want to. (This is a lame excuse, but it's the best I can manage.) I think the internet is the most fun place I've found in recent years, and I've made contact with people all over the world as a result of finding people with similar interests, like you good people. I should explore it more, but time is against me again. I used to log in to the FES chat Room everyday until its demise, and I miss it terribly. I met my best net buddies in there and many of them are still subscribed to Alloy. Manchester is not a bad place to live, though like most cities, it has it's slum areas, drug and crime problems and it's share of homelessness. We have some excellent music venues and sports facilities, but the centre of the city was severely damaged by an IRA bomb in June three years ago, and it'll probably be another year before it's fully rebuilt. I live about 3 miles out of the city centre, in a village suburb called Chorlton-cum-Hardy, which I think is a quaint and very "English" name, as is Didsbury, which is another Manchester suburb where I lived until I was 18. We're about an hour's drive from the North Sea coast, most notably Blackpool and Liverpool, and about 90 minutes from the Lake District, which is where Wordsworth wrote about the "host of golden daffodils" and where an aunt of mine lives, and about 4 hours drive from London. Manchester is the home town of those surly Gallagher brothers (Oasis) as well as the original home of Graham Nash and the rest of the Hollies, Peter Noone, New Order (originally Joy Division), The Smiths, and a lot of other talented people I can't remember the names of. From my office window on the 21st floor I can see the Pennines in the distance, and from the other side of the building Granada TV studios where they record Coronation Street, probably Manchester's biggest and most enduring international export, as well as Cracker and Prime Suspect. I have little interest in politics, but think that the world is now such a complicated place that NO political parties will ever sort it out, but I just wish they'd all stop sniping at each other and work together for the common good. I try to do my bit for the environment by recycling whenever I can, and by cycling to work even when it's raining cats and dogs, but I'd like to do more. I'm worried by the increased competitiveness in business, which causes downsizing, streamlining, redundancies, insecurity and exceptional stress. I'm worried by the lack of jobs for school leavers, the general rate of unemployment, and all kinds of "-ist" discrimination (racist, sexit, ageist, etc.). I worry about how we're going to pay for all the additional retired people now that we're living longer, the queues for medical treatment and the lack of affordable housing. This has turned into much more of a biography than I'd intended, but never mind, it'll give you more of an insight into the life of Slarvi. TTFN Slarvibarglhee P.S. Slarvibarglhee, my net handle, in case you hadn't realised, is just Bill Hargreaves rearranged. I didn't think of it myself. A Scottish colleague of mine a few years ago had the habit of rearranging the letters of people's names to make amusing alternatives. The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy was popular at the time and he turned me into something not entirely dissimilar to Slartibartfast. When I first found my way into the FES I couldn't think of a handle to use, so used Slarvi and have stuck with it ever since. >> ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 21:37:10 -0600 From: "Guy Story, KC5GOI" Subject: Re: Alloy: Cool music site Keith, I found New Age but not New Wave.
