Of course, I've been feeling rather guilty for having solicited new members from the void: Guilty because I didn't thoroughly explain the state of Alloy. This is likely due to my limited experience with email lists. Although Alloy is not the only list I've been subscribed to, it is the only list I've remained on - so I have very few points of comparison. I do agree that the list should be efficient for everyone. I don't agree, however, that I should be blasted for things that other people are guilty of, including the blaster. My 18 posts yesterday were sent knowingly that they would upset some people. But, you know, I threw some content in there too and got some great responses from some great people on this list. Nice to meet you, Debrah and Andy, you showed me respect and kindness and answered my questions, while another decided to attack. Correct me if I'm wrong, Lissu, but don't correct me for something you're just as guilty of. My name is Michael and I've been listening to Thomas Dolby since 1983. In my last post, I explained how important Mr Dolby is to me. Hopefully, I won't get thrown off the list now, but felt some issues needed to be addressed. And, with Lissu's help, they were. Let's let it be. Finally, where can I find information on an upcoming tribute to Thomas Dolby? I heard there was one coming up. I think a lot of us who are new should learn to control ourselves and I am including myself. I collect dictionaries of all kinds. I have a great love for words. I can read a dictionary all night and forget to sleep. I have learned that Webster (quite on purpose) took Oxford English and tried to AmerikaniZe it. I am a native Californian but I don't respect Webster. I don't wish to offend anyone here but it is quite acknowledged that he peppered it with ultra-Christian definitions whenever possible and "flavoured" it without the U's et cetera. Look up the word pagan! It's obscene, leads us straight to the spanish inqusition or monty python jokes perhaps...'-) I don't blame that one on Webster totally, this "type" of definition name-calling is all over Webster though. I believe Voltaire was asked what he learned on his travels to England and he replied "to think." Many writers, poets of today enjoy using real English for it's texture and original beauty and Webster stole this heritage from us. Actually it's "quite gothic" to dredge up outdated English spellings. I have heard it's very expensive to get "real" Oxford though. > Anyway,...if this isn't up your alley, why not try and order an old > dictionary from one of the on-line old book stores based in England? > > Lissu :-) I am ignorant to this...can you give me an idea on how to find such an online store, not like amazon.com. I am serious about this search. I don't like my hit and miss usage of old English that I use in my work. Webster took the E out of judgement for instance. Then I look up judgement in my NEW oxford and it's now vanished too? It confuses me. I don't wish to appear illiterate in my poetry books. I am in final edit for my 2nd book and I can see I am not being consistent at all. Please send private email on this subject to darkpoet@darkpoet.com. And a big welcome to all newbies from downunder-downunder (that's Tasmania). Now I think I can help with the 'Captain, I said wot' question. As you already know it was Captain Sensible. The track can be found on his album 'Women and Captains First' (a pretty good album actually). I don't know if he did any more solo albums but he did a track on 'Hunting of the Snark' (which also boasts tracks by Cliff Richard, Julian Lennon, Paul Simon just to name a few - a strange mix to be sure). This was a concept album based on a 'rock opera' stage production musical (I think) which was in turn based on Lewis Carroll's epic nonsense poem by the same name. What a difference a week makes! Now I've been scouring the planet for it ever since but keep coming up empty. To top it off, I found someone who had the lp of it, still sealed, that he was willing to sell me for a decent price. After a very protracted, exhausting back&forth correspondence, I finally received it yesterday. It's still sealed, yes, but there are big GOUGES in the cover, which caused three of the tracks on side B to have dents in them. Metamorphosis, The Beast in the Crypt, and The Final Seance are hopelessly unplayable & I'm sure Thomas didn't mean for them to be heard with big holes in the middle. The album was called "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake" as a play on the Thomas Dolby album "Aliens Ate My Buick" (AAMB). <-(answer to another question) The tribute consisted of birthday greetings recorded by members around the world as well as covers of Thomas Morgan Dolby Robertson's (TMDR) songs. The tape was presented to Mr. Dolby in time for his 39th birthday on October 14th, 1997. A copy of the tribute was provided to those who contributed to the project (either with a greeting or song). I posted an online version here: http://www.concentric.net/~kasman/aambc.html - ------ In 1998, again a tribute album was created to honor the 40th birthday of our founder. The title of the tribute is "The Flattery Earth" as a play on the Thomas Dolby album "The Flat Earth" (TFE) Due to technological advances, more people were able to contribute to the project by recording their birthday greetings by phone. Mr. Dolby was provided a copy of the birthday greeting on tape in time for his 40th birthday. We are unsure if he has had a chance to listen to it yet because one of the kids used the tape player as a coin slot or something in the mini van. Due to many compounding factors, the remainder of the tribute (which will be on two CDs and include the greetings, Dolby covers and also original songs by Alloy members) has yet to be released to the contributors. Or not, perhaps... :-) > > ...and the same goes for my other scratchy faves, The Search for > Truth, Therapy/Growth, Puppet Theatre, Samson & D.... Puppet Theater is on Part One of the Silk Pajamas CD singles collection which appears occasionally on eBay (www.eBay.com - our precious Melissa clued us into this site which has been the source for many Dolby rarities. Thanks again, Queen of the Quad Cities!). The Search for Truth is on one of the Hyperactive singles released in support of Retrospectacle (this one is tougher to find). As for the others, I don't think they are available on CD and as far as I know, Samson and Delilah has never been released though Kevin Armstrong does have some of his work with TMDR out on vinyl (Local Heroes SW9 - though it ranks right up there with Girls at Our Best as far as I'm concerned, i.e. it's only for us die hard fanatics). And to answer our doll-creating new friend, Rebecca, I own a copy of the book _The Pirate Twins_ which was part of the inspiration for the song. If you write me privately, I can get you a copy of what the twins look like. As for Caroline 452, she may be a blond since Lene Lovich covered her lovely dark hair with a frizzy blond wig for the video. But then again, it refers to a pirate radio station TMDR used to listen to as a teen so perhaps she has dark hair as well. And I was very pleased to hear some Robyn Hitchcock today on a local radio station since it was his birthday. Though he made an unmistakable contribution to White City, I have to say that I was disappointed with his comments about Thomas in the liner notes of the Rhino rerelease of his CD, Black Snake Diamond Role. He says, "Matthew [Seligman, bass player and good friend of TMDR] dragged Thomas Dolby down at one point and said, 'This guy is going to be famous, you've got to use him'. So Dolby was stuck in front of a fairly conventional keyboard, which he played fairly conventionally; he hadn't gotten his worldview in front of him yet." Thomas is credited with playing "Ocean" on the track Love for those who are interested. A warm hello is sent to all of our newbies and I send sympathy to Andy - I can't imagine how horrible it must be for a music lover to have tinnitus! You are a very tolerant bunch so I hope dictionaries, most music subjects, science, philosophy and other thinking subjects are welcome when there's no Dolby info on the plate. I think a lot of us are new here and we are posting too much in our new found excitement. >> Thanks for the compliments, Debrah... much appreciated, and I agree with your views on this group. I always hope this is a place where people will feel comfortable discussing intelligent topics such as Dolby, music, philosophy, science etc... and some not so intelligent (like that time I was nine & threw up on my dad's hardcover Alice in Wonderland book on a car trip) sometimes... But one word of slight correction - I'm definitely a 'she', not a 'he'. It's true! I just have a boyish spelling which sometimes confuses people who can't see my pink hair & other typically female attributes :) I think Thomas would find my proposals of marriage far more disturbing if I were a boy (just joking... in truth neither of us is up for marital grabs... I haven't *really* been proposing marriage to him thousands & thousands of times over... honest!) The venture joins the Beatnik technology and Zomba's extensive music production library catalogues ensuring copyright protected music to be distributed over the Internet. In addition, Zomba has become an equity investor in Headspace through its venture capital division in Europe. Web site designers, creative directors, and entertainment professionals can now access an extensive range of high-quality production music libraries via the Internet. The combination of easy-to-use technology and extensive audio catalogues provides all the tools needed to search, select and license music and sound. This agreement has simplified a process that is normally complex and time-consuming. "The Headspace/Zomba partnership will revolutionize the way companies access audio and music online," said Clive Calder, Chairman and CEO, The Zomba Group of Companies. "Working closely with a technology company led by a musical innovator such as Thomas Dolby Robertson, we can now offer the compelling interactivity and secure copyright protection that the online music market demands." Zomba is one of the largest publishers of music worldwide with comprehensive music catalogues and significant holdings in the area of production music libraries. The music for the venture will be supplied by Zomba's production music libraries, beginning with FirstCom Music, Hollywood Film Music Library, Gotham Music Library, Access Music Library and Chappell Recorded Music Library. This online service will provide a one-stop shop for Web site developers, creative directors and sound editors to enhance their creative products with copyright protected interactive music and sound. "As an artist, I know the impact this will have on Web content developers," said Thomas Dolby Robertson, Chief Beatnik and founder of Headspace. "By providing them with a streamlined workflow process for selecting and integrating pre-licensed music, via an easy technology like Beatnik with its quick downloads and built-in copyright protection, we are creating a service that would never have been possible without the Web. This is a significant development for the next generation of Internet media and entertainment companies." This strategic partnership underscores Zomba's commitment to bring audio to the Internet and its support of Headspace. The joint venture and equity investment renews the relationship between Zomba and Thomas Dolby that began in the early 1980s when Dolby began his career as an extremely successful songwriter and recording artist. "Headspace is excited about Zomba's decision to extend use of its music catalogues to the Web," said Lorraine Hariton, president and CEO of Headspace, Inc. "Zomba's investment in Headspace is a clear indication of the evolution of sound on the Internet. With Beatnik software and the Zomba catalogues, Headspace can become the technology leader of audio and music online."
