Actually, yes. And believe it or not, I could practically blame Thomas for getting me into Industrial Music. I've followed it since the mid 80's and now run an Industrial Music site. http://industrialmusic.miningco.com/ <---- innocent plug, really I was depressed one night flipping thru the radio dial. Somehow I ended up on a college station that was playing Billy Joel's "Pressure". It fit my mood well so I left the station on. Next song was Europa and the Pirate Twins and my life was changed forever. Continued to get into other new wave/electronic artists like most of them so I won't list ;) - -- because of Thomas I discovered Ministry (early synthpop version) and I followed Ministry into Industrial Music. Thus, Thomas was very important in my course of music. Esp since I usually listened to metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, I was influenced that much. So much that I listened with tears in my eyes the first time I heard Eastern Bloc and continue to get goose bumps when I hear it, because it wrapped up a decade of music for me. I hope I don't get kicked off the list for blabbing on endlessly. ;) > makes me want to go put on TESTURE right now!!!!If I could only have one > SP song that would have to do...the lyrics alone have the intensity of > fire itself. Very pleased to meet you. Someone with similar interests is always nice to meet! Lich ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 11:52:50 +0200 From: "Ulfstedt, Louise" Subject: Alloy: PLEASE READ if you have the patience! Hi all! If you have the time and patience, please read this! I have to admit that I feel the a little the same as Robin here,...I'm bewildered by what's going on on the list. I've always felt that alloy was not just a posting list, but a bunch of good friends, some talkative, some not so talkative, brought together because of Thomas' music, but happy to share other details of our lives with each other, because we converse, listen, and speak as FRIENDS! If Andy wasn't happy with this kind of list, fine, (although I admit, he didn't need to be rude and snide about it),..all he proved was that our list doesn't suit him, and he doesn't suit alloy either. Let's let it be. We all have our different opinions, and far from being sanctimoniously P.C., I've always been struck by the fact that the alloyites have always shown real genuine respect, openmindedness, and patience for each other, and are a really caring bunch. I think that the list has worked perfectly for years just as it is,...and I don't see the need to rush into any big changes,..the ease of posting to this board is one of it's greatest attractions,...do we really need to make up a set of rules and regulations because a loud minority doesn't like it when we post off topic? If we want to say something special about Thomas, sure, put it in the subject line, but I read everybody's posts, because I love to read what all of you have to say, and VALUE what each of you think. You are my friends! However, I have to say that the one-liners have got me irritated too,...First of all, Lichaem, whoever you are, please, if you're going to post here, be kind & introduce yourself, please tell us who you are! To one-line-en-masse writers in general, could I give you a gentle hint? When I want to make short replies to more than a couple of people's mails, I tend to put them all in one mail,...that way, I'm not costing people a fortune by them having to be on line for an age to download so many mails, I'm not needlessly overloading the smoe server,..(which has to send each mail you send to over 80 people on the list), and...I'll have to admit, I really didn't understand half of your mails, simply because I didn't know what they we're referring too,..sorry. The other thing worth bearing in mind is that Alloy isn't anything like ICQ, or a chat room,...unlike one other internet forum I read, where people in the same time zone can talk almost real-time, there are alloyites based in many different time zones on here, and not only that, this board, unlike many, isn't totally North American-based. There are active members in the US (East & West coast, and everything between!), UK, France, Sweden, Australia, Tasmania, Finland, etc. etc. to name but a few, and not everyone here has English as their mother tongue. We cope with our time & language differences by making it clear what we are referring too, and having meaty coversations,..and please try to remember that some readers may read your mails many hours later, or the next day. So this kind of conversational, cryptic one-liners we've been seeing makes it very difficult for us to follow what is going on,.... and fills up our mail boxes,....I'm so glad that we have all you new members on the board, it's great to have you along, but please, do try to think about your fellow members,...and the pressure you're putting on the their systems! To give an example, due to the mass of one liners from Lichaem and melanie (who sent 18 and 12 short mails respectively yesterday), irregardless of the content of the mails, my usual mail load was more than tripled, and I was shut out of my mailbox this morning because I'd gone over my mail quota. This got me in to trouble with our IT department, who told me I shouldn't be subscribing to high-volume lists at work,....(I don't have internet access at home), so you see, this does cause real problems,...I can only subscribe to alloy if it remains low-volume. Alloy usually consists of something between 10 and 18 mails a day (I've just checked) and went up to 54 mails yesterday. So,...have a heart, dear friends, and don't send a mass of one-liners anymore. Please come in, make yourselves welcome, introduce yourselves, and join in this slow, rich, thorough, delicious conversation like you would a really good chocolate mousse, savouring it, not rushing it! And on that note, its lunch time,..I'm off for my chow,..... Take care all of you! >> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 07:49:00 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: OT - so VERY sorry In a message dated 3/3/99 6:07:33 AM Eastern Standard Time, andyv@FINALYSYS.com writes: << Let's face it, I realise I may be an Information Vampire but we can't ALL know the Man Himself can we? I did spend a fair bit of time introducing myself - it may be that's all I have to contribute but I'd still like to read everyone else's on-topic comments. (And I DID ask a few questions...) If I'm not welcome because I'm lacking in TMDR knowledge/contacts then let me know - even such a crazy world as this still manages to surprise me occasionally. >> ::guilt:: I really was just being dopey with the DIV thing, sorry Andy! But you know (from my private email to you about it) that contributing to this list has to do with asking as well as answering. Trust me, nobody will have a hard time with you because you aren't up on your Dolby factoids. I have no head for that sort of thing. I'm here because I love Thomas' work with a passion :) I've made some good friends here too. I think very few of us know Mr Dolby personally, so this isn't a prerequisite either! I'm glad you want to stay, so make yourself at home & as always, let me know if you have any questions or problems with the list. Please chech the Alloy archives http://www.smoe.org/lists/alloy/ for past discussions about Thomas' work. We do have MANY... just not the day you first came in, unfortunately! Of course,...you're welcome to use, borrow, steal, tear up and glue back together anything you find my mails! The chocolate mousse thing must have been subconcious coz my vocal specialist has banned me from having chocolate (as well as tea, coffee, carbonated drinks, any type of alcohol, any foods that are fatty or greasy, sweets, pastries,...hell, everything I like because my reflux problem is damaging my vocal chords. I would just like to add my 2 cents...This is the best list that I have ever been on...everyone here is friendly and supportive. If I were on another list, I would have never posted the message about my brother-in-law...but here, it felt okay. This a great list with a bunch of great people. We may go off topic but still we're bound by the fact that we are fans of Mr. Dolby and that in itself, binds us together.. That's just my opinion...
