I know I've been a little quiet of late, but I just haven't felt like talking. However, reading this, I did reach the 'have to weigh in' point. Personally, I find this 'apology' just as snarky and distasteful as the original post. He still obviously feels that we have a 'problem' because we don't remain strictly 'on topic' and that he's doing us a service by pointing out our 'shortcomings' so we can 'fix' them. And let's not even discuss his implication that anyone who found offense was looking for it. Of course, the possibility exists that he's just one of those people who doesn't translate well online. Given what seems to be his current attitude, I don't think he'd be happy here, nor would we be happy having him. Not every list is going to meet the needs of everyone who has an interest in the subject matter, and sometimes there's just not anything to be done for it. I suppose we -could- have another go at 'what's your favourite Dolby tune and why', or 'conspiracy and oppression themes in Dolby's early work', but as has already been said, you can only go over the same material so many times. Besides, I thought XTC had honorary 'on-topic' status due to Andy and Thomas having worked together. ;) I'm late for a chat, so I'll wrap this up now. Hope to be more talkative later. :) Robyn M @ Robyn Moore @ http://www.alveus.com/kbrm/robyn.html @ You knew the job was dangerous when you took it. - S.C. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 20:38:18 EST From: Kichug@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: Alloy Members yeah - but just like SOME of us... :) it's hard to keep our mouths shut when an isolated - or not so isolated thought comes to mind... don't you guys like sharing that kind of stuff.... i know - sometimes as rare as it might be.... :) m ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 20:34:37 EST From: Kichug@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: Alloy Members then maybe Andy would come back sniff sniff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 20:45:03 EST From: Kichug@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: xtc again ooh yes - Mister Belew.... ahhh - fond memories.... and yes - i'm a youngin, i suppose to know such a "dinosaur" BUT i DID see him play live with his young lions tour, i think it was .... no - it was inner revolution... and then on the last king crimson tour..... took my breath away - so i was incredibly ecstatic to find a copy of the tour on tape... from Japan nonetheless.... very good - even ran into a very cute young man in the process.... but anyway............ yes... When I first got on this list two of the members were talking about motorcross bikes. And, at first I thought somehow this subject had some kind of reference to Dolby (maybe one of his children was into bikes too. Who knows??). After I introduced myself and asked questions about the bike subject, I felt very welcome and didn't mind the tangents that Alloy members get on. It's just kinda cool to hear from others who appreciate Dolby's music as much as I do. I hope Andy finds what he's looking for. I am new, so only know a few days worth of the scenerio. I agree he shouldnt have just left so soon, and with such negative comments, but maybe the letters on his delete key were faded so much it just drove him to the brink. Not to mention that negative connotations have been flowing steadily in his absense. I guess it doesn't matter because the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. I am new to this list .. have noticed the overabundance of comments that would not be tolerated on other lists. It's tolerated here, so I hope I can be welcome. I am on the Skinny Puppy mailing list, where they kick you off at the drop of a pin. SP have been dead since 1995, so it's difficult to talk about a band that has been gone for years, even tho they've still put out unreleased stuff in those years. Is there like a FAQ to read for this list? I love Thomas since Golden Age, but feel I barely know him. Knew he was married to a model, but kids? Man, I feel lost. Interesting. Methinks the other Andy, that has caused such a turmoil on the list, must be on other lists where people are terminated for .. hmmmm, I just realized something. Wasn't it Judy Collins who sang .. 'where have all the flowers gone, la-la-la lala lala, dum de dah de dum de dah, lalala, dum de la the um ah flowers yeah where they lalala.." sorry I can't remember all the words .. anyone know if there is a lyrics server available anymore, as I'd like to look up TD lyrics as well. Thanks in advance. Robyn Moore wrote: > > At 02:11 PM 3/2/99 , you wrote: > > > >This message was bounces to me as a non-member submission. I believe the whole issue of posting off-topic things has suddenly, over the last two days, been pushed to its limits by the posting of way too many nearly NONSENSICAL things, 'one-liners', etc. Remember that a lot of people do not have easy access to the Internet, they must pay a lot for their connections, and if they just barely were able to tolerate intelligent, conversational posts amongst Alloy members, they sure as hell won't tolerate having forty posts of someone spouting off one liners etc. The proper way of going about things, guys, is to introduce yourselves, get to know each other & let us know you, please!!!! And do try to ground yourselves, if not to things directly Dolby-related, then at least meaningful in some way to people beyond yourself. I've snapped. If it keeps going this way for even one more day I'm going to take steps toward changing things that some of you will not like. Everybody calm down, take a deep breath, and think about what you are saying on a public-access fan list dedicated to the work of Thomas Dolby. I will not have this list overrun with bullshit. ENOUGH. Write to me with questions if you have them. Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 1999 21:19:13 -0800 (PST) From: "Charles E. Kemp" Subject: Alloy: potpurri RE: Andy Yes, Andy made a hasty and rather poorly woorded retreat from the list, but let's not pound the guy into a pulp. Let's face it, not only do we tend to get off-topic, we tend to get WAY off topic. Worse yet, we tend to stay there. Maybe that's because we don't have MTV attention spans, but to me it seems like we've almost gotten to the point where our little community IS the topic. OTOH, I also agree with those who point out that Thomas has been sitting on his bum. *hides from the fearless leader* If we did try to stay on topic, then we'd see all of about 3 posts a week, and 2 of those would be "is the list still working?" messages. So, my verdict? Stay as you are. I wouldn't want you any other way. Oh, and maybe in a "Welcome to Alloy" mailing generated by the majordomo software, we should put in a warning that the list tend to stay off topic. To quote Blade Runner, we would be "creating a pillow for their emotions", and possibly eliminate any such outbursts in the future. And, in closing off this topic, I don't want to analyze the music. I have to think all day at work, so the last thing I want to do when I get home is think some more. Just kick back and ENJOY the music, lads (and ladettes). and now... RE: musical diversity If you dug through my cd-collection, you would probably find yourself scratching your head a bit. Granted, you wouldn't scratch your head as much as if you took a gander at Crackers' but it's not entirely homogenous either. :) yes, there is an obscene amount of Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode in there (over 70 out of 250 discs), but then again I'm a bit of a packrat. However if keep looking you'll find a fair amount of Dwight Yoakam in there, for when I want to get back to my psychobilly roots. But not too far away you'll see some Liza Minelli. Then I go and get a testosterone rush and start feeling homocidal and that's what the Front 242 is for. And then there's some Bob Geldof for when I just feel suicidal. Most of what I listen to is of a more electronic nature, but there is also a fair amount of Eric Clapton because even I enjoy the beauty in different styles when it is well done. As a nod to impending middle age and the "adult contemporary" label that goes with it, you'll see some Everything But The Girl. Oh, and then there's my Carly Simon discs... As expected, there are the New Order, Electronic, and Smiths CD's. And over there is my Peter collection. Both Gabriel and Murphy. For when I'm feeling silly there's some Dread Zepplin, Electric Amish, TMBG, Michelle Shocked, and L.A. Style. And how can I forget my Laurie Anderson? Can't get much quirkier than her. And that's where thomas fits in. Or doesn't fit in. He combines the elements of all those musicians (well, maybe not the Bob Geldof), and because of that he can't really be pidgeonholed. I originally took a listen to TMDR because of his reputation as an electronic musician, but of course soon found out that he's more than that. Keep in mind, as I've stated before, that I only knew TMDR from Blinded and I absolutely loathe that song...so when I initially bought Retrospectacle it was with a fair amount of trepidation because I thought it would be awful.
