Saturday had the skis waxed & sharpened, but too sharp, so Sunday I could only descend in straight lines. Couldn't turn at all, shouted & swore loudly & hated it all. All stations shut Monday so stayed at home & read Moorcocks' "Ice Schooner" in French. Tuesday afternoon, only one piste & the beginners' slopes opened, so waited 50 mins in the queues for the telecabine up to the only decent red run open. Attacked & bluntened my skis with a screwdriver so can turn like a demon now !! You're welcome!...and I just had to say that the Galilean moons are my binocular's favourite destination,..I just love that feeling you get when you're watching something that isn't revolving around us, you can really imagine the thrill that Galileo must have had when he made that first telescope and figured out that not everything revolved around the earth,.....so magic! My favourite astronomical night came about 2 yrs ago on a very dark road between Turku (where I live) and Helsinki. It was an incredibly clear, cold night, the northern lights were shifting in the distance, and the tail of the comet Hyukatake was stretched out right across literally half of the sky,...what a sight! In my opinion, the worst thing about living in towns is that people forget to look at all the fantastic scenery overhead.... Happy Stargazing! Gee, since Jupiter is my astrological planet and it's behind Venus, that means that all Sagittarians could be experiencing expanding love in their lives. Greetings Everyone, from a newbie to this mailing list. I'm a fairly dedicated TD fan, just love the music and the guy's singing voice. I have all the CD albums (even Gateway), a stack of 12" singles, and a couple of videos too. How sad am I? Well... do you know the Dissidents video? Remember all those bits of paper falling down on our hero... I WANT one! On a T-shirt! hehe. My first question.... I had flu last week and cheered myself up (tinnitus even louder than usual) by listening to the minidisc I've put all my favourite TD vinyl tracks on... now I can't get Urban Tribal out of my head. Trouble is, it's the scratchy version from a flexi-disc single (the one on the video is really dull on one channel) and it's got all those silly changes in level and TV noises as in the video. So... is there ANY way I can get hold of this track in a reasonable quality? Legally? Or not, perhaps... :-) ...and the same goes for my other scratchy faves, The Search for Truth, Therapy/Growth, Puppet Theatre, Samson & D.... ...and the Wreck of the Fairchild too perhaps - although that's not too bad on my vinyl copy of the Golden Age. (Does anyone else REALLY enjoy the PING! sound in that track... hehe. Oh, and sorry, "uno dos tres megahertz FM" is slightly wrong... as an airband frequency it would actually be 123 MHz AM! THAT's how sad I am) I'll sit back in my seat now and wait for the replies to come flooding in.... Toodle-pip +Andy+ P.S. Does Mr. TMDR actually read any of this? If so, hi dude... make some more music... grovel.... please... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 15:05:29 -0500 From: "Stephen M. Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Hi (New member) - Urban Tribal... Welcome, Andy!!! You are *really* sad. And so am I. The phonetic alphabet used in "The Wreck of the Fairchild" is also incorrect . . . But, hey, TMDR was only 22 or so when he did that one. Let's cut him some slack . That PING you refer to reminds me of a warning alert and, pilot that I am, I tend to shudder if I think about it too much. You are *definitely* in the right place. Dear Alloyed, A few days ago I got the idea to search eBay for the addresses of folks who have participated in auctions for TMDR related items and send them an invitation to join our group. I gathered some 60 addresses by going through all the auctions, current and completed, that applied. Early this morning I sent the invitation. Now I see that three of those folks have joined the list already! So a very warm welcome to Rebecca, Anthony, and David. Thanks for giving us a look. Perhaps you might like to tell us how you came to enjoy the works of Thomas Dolby, where you first heard (or saw) him, and any other Dolbynalia you might care to share. And by all means - pull up a comfy chair, grab a bevvy from the fridge, and enjoy yourselves. Welcome! Hello there fellow list members, I like and respect Thomas Dolby's breadth of work. My favorite album is, of course, Flat Earth... I am here because I plan on making some dolls of characters out of Dolby's songs, such as Caroline 452, and maybe the Pirate Twins... recently I was asked to have my dolls of Eden and David from the group ABC featured in Lexicon Magazine, so I'm pretty jazzed about that. If you have any preconceived ideas in your head of how specific characters look from songs I'd love to hear your input. And Thomas, if you're reading this, what color hair did Caroline have? It's killing me. Blue? Red? Brunette? Help! There is a young lady here on the list that goes by the name of Europa who can quite handily address at least some of these issues. How about it, Eurie? /\/\iles P.S. I wish we'd been able to get a better view of Hyakutake but conditions were far from perfect in Boston. If we walked way up to the highest point of the city on a clear night, we could see the tail of it, and the lovely turquoise color. I wish we could have seen it stretched out across half the sky like you describe, Lissu!! To see a really gigantic comet like that has actually been one of my most sought-after dreams since I first laid eyes on an image of one at a planetarium show as a child. I'd never been so impressed with anything in all my life. To even know such a wildly, gorgeously surreal and powerful thing could exist in the world I inhabited just blew my mind. I have been collecting old woodcut images of historical comet visitations ever since; among my favorites, one unnamed comet over the French contryside a couple of centuries ago that is carefully depicted having ~seven~ tails. Of course, I have also made a date with myself to stick around for Halley's next passing (I'll be somewhere in my early 90's) Its next visitation is supposed to be the most spectacular yet, so I can't very well miss it. Anyone else want to meet me for this event, somewhere in the world? Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 19:07:20 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: dolls! I can't wait to see your interpretations of the characters in Thomas' songs! Congratulations on getting your work into Lexicon. Is your work featured on the net? I know you will be a great inspiration for me because I am actually hoping to try making dolls within the next year or so. I'm a visual artist formally trained as a violin maker & am also learning how to sew & do embroidery, etc... maybe doll making would be another good thing for me to try. A girl's gotta have dreams, right? :) Lisa Lichtenfels is one of my very favorite artists in this realm. I'd be surrounded by her dolls, if I could afford them! Yes, you can see some of my work at the following two URLs: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/3426/custom7.html and http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/7329/rebecca.html I do a lot of trading with other doll artists and it's a blast! I have a really wonderful Terri Nunn (from the rock group Berlin) someone made for me a few years ago, as well as "Trixie the 80's Goddess", complete with her own miniature Thomas Dolby record collection, that my buddy Michael made me. If you end up doing fashion dolls, I'll trade with you sometime and teach you some of the tricks of the trade! As far as other types of dolls, I'm pretty ignorant... I've had a passing interest in astronomy for some time, but never really did much about it before . But a few weeks ago I saw an ad in the local press about a 10 week evening course at the college. It was only £20, so I thought I'd give it a go. Our tutor is a real enthusiast and seems to enjoy imparting his knowledge. Next Tuesday we're all off to Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope for a lecture on the new Liverpool University Telescope in Tenerife, which will allow schools, colleges and astronomy clubs to use it remotely. Should be intertesting. Cloudy tonight, I'm afraid. Very little to see apart from half a moon. TTFN Slarv ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V4 #59 **************************
