This used to drive me nuts,..Nowadays, if I subscribe or write to anything in the net that I think might result in Spam (e.g. anything where you have to fill out a form or leave details), I use my hotmail address (free e-mail service) as it has the "block sender" option. That way you can click the "block" option for these mails, and then you can forget about them, and don't have to bother to un-subscribe. I keep this address I'm writing from for personal e-mail & work stuff only. That's my suggestion, because then you don't get stressed and waste time unsubscribing from things you never subscribed to in the first place,....oh and I think all spammers should be shot too! Anyone know how to get round > this ? That's usually because the spammer had his email account revoked almost immedietly after sending the stuff out, so you can't reply anyhow. However, even so, Don't Unsubscribe Yourself! It's unfortunate, but more often than not, all this accomplishes is letting the spamming organization know that your email address is, in fact, valid, and hence should be kept on file for future mass emails. If you really want to do something about it, the best you can really do is find *all* email addresses referenced in the spam (the From: and any reply addresses mentioned -- but the From: address is often faked, so you have to look at the full headers to really know for sure), and then forward the spam to postmaster@ (that is, if the spammer's address is @) with a note that one of their users is abusing their email account. It's worse than this, even, since the best mass emailers send from their own domains (rather than hotmail, yahoo, what-have-you), and so *can't* have their own accounts revoked. In this case, it's a bit more technical, but you have to look at the headers and figure out the 'downstream' provider (ie, their ISP -- the first machines the email is routed through after the spammer's domain) and alert those organizations' postmasters. If you're not this gung-ho anti-spam, though, you just have to delete the stuff :-< - -spc /- Sean Cier -\ ( Death to Vermin! ) \- http://www.PostHorizon.com/scier -/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 12:49:41 -0500 From: MacSuirtain Subject: Re: Alloy: Spam Sean Cier wrote: > That's usually because the spammer had his email account revoked > almost immedietly after sending the stuff out, so you can't reply anyhow. > However, even so, Don't Unsubscribe Yourself! I have always heard that Parisians hate it when Americans try (and in their opinion, butcher) French while visiting France. A friend of mine just got back from a business trip to Paris, and he said that it was the opposite. He said if he spoke English the people he encountered would get totally annoyed with him, but if he did his best to try to ask for things in French, he found the people would intently listen and helpfully correct him, and he always ended up getting his questions answered. What's the dilly? Has this changed, or was it always this way? If it's not, then it's confirmation that you have a valid email address and you may get on even more lists. There's not a lot you can do. Usually the headers are faked so it is hard to track where the mails come from. If the message has a web page address in the body that is from a internet provider, such as www.freeyellow.com/~sex.html you should send a copy of the mail (the full message source) to the provider, usually they have a mail address called abuse to report users of their system who abuse their policy. For the example above you would send it to: abuse@freeyellow.com Usually the page will get removed. It doesn't necessarily stop you from getting more mail, but at least it makes it more difficult for companies who send unsolicited commercial messages to make a quick buck.
