I work for Barclays Bank and can tell you categorically that International Money Orders (IMO's) work over here too and are a lucrative source of income for us. We charge £9.00 for any IMO under £1000.00, and, just to let you know, they are treated as cash in that they cost nothing to pay into your account and you can draw on the funds immediately (Although they do technically take at least 5 days to clear which may be why they prefer cash?) Dear Dolbyites, Recently, Peter Fitzpatrick wrote: > it doesn't get much further away from Dolby than this... > I took delivery of an Autoharp today. Oh, this is very much on-topic. I can think of three separate recordings by TMDR that have what I believe to be an autoharp in them. Clue: two of these are alternate versions of the same song. Can you name them? * * * This would likely be a very good question for another round of Tommy Awards - a contest of trivia and wit held a few years ago on the precursor to the Alloy list, Kaleidospace, wherein the winner was awarded a TMDR collectible. I believe the winner was our own and irreplaceable Lissu (Louise Ulfstedt). What exactly did you win, Lissu? I, and others, have considered invoking another Tommy Awards contest. It might be a good way to focus these ever wandering, multi-faceted trains of thought that are Alloy onto something exclusively Dolby. Well, at least for a little while ;-) . . . Potentially the contest could be presented in the form of a webpage. (Europa and I did a preliminary design for this idea some time ago, but we're no websmiths. We just used the HTML "Wizard" in Word97 to come up with an acceptable form and filled it in with a couple of suggested puzzles.) This would allow audio and visual elements into the competition and further enhance our enjoyment of the chase. Additionally, I feel all those who participate will benefit by gaining deeper knowledge and insight into the career and art of our proclaimed object of affection. And so, I make a motion to revive the Tommy Awards. Will anyone second me? Keep in mind that I do not wish to run this event, but I will participate materially: I am offering a promotional poster for Aliens Ate My Buick from my collection to be awarded to the most successful competitor. Maybe we can appeal to Mr. Dolby to inscribe and autograph the poster for the winner! Perhaps others will come forward with items which could be assigned to the first and second runners-up. The success of this will require the participation and cooperation of the most knowledgeable among us, and so lastly I would like to suggest a nomination for gamemasters: a collaboration of Europa, Lord Stemish (Brian Clayton), and Russell Milliner, as they likely should be disqualified from the competition due to their vast knowledge of Dolby matters anyway, and additionally in the case of Brian and Russell their knowledge of websmithing and administration will be helpful. Again, any takers? Sorry to have been silent for so long. Yours in AllThingsDolby(tm), /\/\iles ****************************************************************** * * * To humiliate oneself is human. I just wish I was good enough to be a qualified participant... the depth of my TMDR knowledge is about as thick as a CD.. however.. it is a Dolby CD. At any rate.. Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Project B-Day - Background, FAQ, and Update Hello Dears, /\/\iles here with the background on, and an update for our current Project BDay - number three! Since there are more than a few new voices in our wilderness let me restate the premise and intent of this project, and encourage you to participate in this year's tribute. For the past two years the musicians and other well-wishers of Alloy have endeavored to honor Mr. Dolby by creating a tribute recording to commemorate his current birthday, which falls on October 14th. The previous two recordings, "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake" and "The Flattery Earth" took the general form of audio birthday greetings from various members of Alloy mixed over background music followed by covers of TMDR songs submitted by those of us brave enough to do so. With "The Flattery Earth" we added the enhancement of "b-sides": Those who submit Dolby covers may also submit another song, preferably original, to be included after the cover songs. The Project BDay concept originates from the days of "The Tap Room", a threaded bulletin board on Thomas Dolby's Flat Earth Society website. If my historical reference is accurate this idea was first suggested by JAMac (Dennis Alexander). The Flat Earth website "Tap Room" eventually died and the project was inherited by Alloy in time for the first recording "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake" (AAMBC). Ian Gifford, formerly of Alloy but still in touch, compiled, mastered, and produced that recording, and duplicated it to cassette. Crackers (Chris Cracknell) produced the artwork and j-card. This was all done for the cost of materials and shipping only. One copy was sent to each participant and one copy was hand delivered by a group of lucky Alloy members to Mr. Dolby. There is a photograph of that not-yet-world-famous event posted at Paul Baily's website, http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb/onlocation.html Last year's project, "The Flattery Earth" (TFE), is being compiled, mastered, and produced by myself. Duplication and artwork are being handled by Keith Stansell with assistance from JAMac and Beth Meyer. TFE will be duplicated on two CDs. Although there have been an incredible number of roadblocks and delays this recording is about to go to press. As only Europa (Mary Brown) and I have heard TFE so far, allow me to tease: Those of you who had the gumption to participate, and so will receive a copy, are in for a real treat. You'll just have to trust me for the nonce when I say it is well worth the wait. Although the musical program of TFE has been delayed, Mr. Dolby received the Greetings portion of the program on his birthday (his fortieth!) on a specially prepared cassette "single" with graphics, credits, and bonus tracks. For the past few months I have been running a TFE "mini-list" to keep participants abreast of developments, and to preserve an element of surprise for Thomas, who frequents Alloy. For those of Alloy who did not participate last year you will be able to hear scaled down versions of the majority of our work at Keith Stansell's TFE website, http://Keith.Stansell.com/flattery.htm sometime after the recording goes to press. It may be that we cannot post all of the songs simultaneously due to space limitations, or possibly in one case, copyright restrictions, but there will be something to sink your ears into. There is a similar site for the AAMBC project, also courtesy of Keith: http://www.concentric.net/~kasman/aambc.html Again I would like to encourage everyone to participate in this year's tribute. The audio greetings are a free for all, with the only restriction being a length of 30 seconds or less, while songs are selected on a dibs basis: if someone else hasn't already claimed it, any TMDR composition or cover may be selected. Roughly speaking, we need the songs and greetings turned in well in advance of TMDR's birthday in order to complete and deliver the recording by October 14, 1999. You may submit your recordings in any format. I note Peter Fitzpatrick has generously offered to help produce this year's tribute. Thanks, Peter! Let's get together on this and see what can be arranged. Recently Crackers wrote: > Could someone please repost the URL for the Project B-Day III > webpage?
