Sorry John, I looked through my pictures from Mexico City and although I did get a picture of a Beetle taxi, it did not have Magna Sin on the side of it like some of the others. By the way, part of the reason I liked the name was because I lived in Salt Lake at the time and there was a small Utah town nearby with the name of Magna. I kind of liked the double meaning of the name. - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Thursday, February 11, 1999 3:15 AM Subject: Re: Alloy: album title? > > > >That sounds cool Keith - speaking of scanner art..... Is that Kershaw of my Stiff Records box set fame? I'm confused about it, I might be thinking of Nick Lowe? What songs have we heard from Nick Kershaw? Nonetheless, congrats Lissu because it sounds like you had a really smashing good time. All except for the cold of course. Boy between Lissu and the_copse, we're all picking up some good vibes from 80's musicians-in-kind these days. Now all we need is for Mr. Dolby to give us good news! Or tell us some good stories anyway ;) Oh that reminds me, the other day I saw a segment on TV about some of these chaps, and I remembered that there had been a discussion before. To update some of you, contrary to what we thought -- Howard Jones evidently became a millionaire at a young age due to his shrewd/smart ownership of his songs (something like that). As I recall the discussion in here was whether he had the ability to work musically anymore, and whether he needed "help." Apparently he is doing great! Another one that outsmarted record label fatcats in the same manner is the Tears for Fears Mr. Orzabal. And another story was Andy Partridge. I hadn't realized that XTC had stopped touring because of Andy's having contracted a horrible stage fright. The band has not broken up though. Ok, enough nontopic 80's from me :) Or, I dunno, I guess TMDR likes these folks and their music too. - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) On Fri, 12 Feb 1999 TBlagg@aol.com wrote: > > Wow Lissu, > > Nick was one of the all time 80's legends! If I'm not mistaken, one of our newer Alloy member is a friend of Andy Partridge and has a web page with an extensive interview he did with Andy. From what I remember of the interview, Andy and the boys didn't have such a good contract with the record company and have held off recording anything new in the past few years until this contract from hell ends. As I recall, they were going to release some new material this year because the contract has expired. I think the contract had a bit to do with Andy's "stage fright". Apparently touring was hell due to the way the record company was handling things and the stress that was causing. I wouldn't be surprised if Andy got over the "stage fright" with the end of this contract. Who was it that had the Andy Partridge interview? It was Hyperactive! Lucinda, I can't help but wonder, which version of "Hyperactive" was played on M2? Was it the extended mix one they used to play occasionally on MTV or the shortened one that was commercially available on "The Golden Age of Video" and the Video 45? The extended version has the lines: "Semaphore out on the floor/Messages from outer space" where you see Mr. Dolby standing in his white suit shielding his eyes from a blinding light from above. There's much more of what I think is called "black theater" (Melissa, Robin, and you artsy types help me out here) where the illusion of disembodied limbs is created by dressing background people all in black except for those parts which are supposed to be floating, e.g. feet in this video, and the subject is dressed as their photographic negative. I know I'm not describing it well but TMDR talked about it in an interview on MTV at the time. Maybe I'll dig out my tape and hear what he said! And a belated hello to our new friend Bill who lives in Chicago! Did you see TMDR in '84 at the Auditorium Theater? It would be fun for me to meet someone else who had been there. Nick Lowe - Cruel To Be Kind (and what great tuneage that is!), Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good? (with the video that reminds me of The Day The Earth Stood Still). I think that song was the only real hit Nik had here stateside. Someone who spent less time than me in West Podunk during the 80's could probably correct that thought. Human Racing is a good album. > Nonetheless, congrats Lissu because it sounds like you had a really > smashing good time. All except for the cold of course. Or tell us some good stories anyway ;) No kidding - I've been having major league 80's nostalgia this week. I've been listening to Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, and Nick Heyward while I read the want ads. Oh - I want to plug a really good disk - Nick Heyward's recent release "The Apple Bed" rocks - it has a wonderful Beatles-y feel to it. Marvelous stuff. I was hooked with the first track. > To update some of you, contrary to what we thought -- Howard Jones > evidently became a millionaire at a young age due to his shrewd/smart > ownership of his songs (something like that). As I recall the discussion That's cool to know, and it's funny that you mention it, oh psychic soul sister, because only yesterday, on a whim, I typed in "www.howardjones.com" to see if there was anything there. Lo and behold, I found it a very well-organized, info-filled site - wish I lived in London, so I could hang out at the Borders on Oxford Street and hear him play some tunes on the 27th. > in here was whether he had the ability to work musically anymore, and > whether he needed "help." Apparently he is doing great! Another one that > outsmarted record label fatcats in the same manner is the Tears for Fears > Mr. Orzabal. I understand that Roland is starting his own label and prepping material for the next album. Raoul and the Kings of Spain is a fabulous recording. I'm so glad I got to see him on that tour. Can't wait for him to get some new stuff out and get back on the road! Mary, I didn't know there was a shorter version of Hyperactive. I've always heard it with the "semaphore" line. Arrrrg! Too many versions of too many songs!!!
