Had to tell you guys about this.... Last weekend, I was sat in my favourite cafe by the river, reading the newspaper & drinking tea. I noticed an add for one of the two major ferry companies that operate between here (Turku) and Stockholm,...first of all I thought the add had to be a joke,...."Nik Kershaw" it read,....live in concert, Wed 10.2. Well,...it seems to have a certain stigma attached to it, so I don't mention it much, but I'm a big fan of Nik's music. Nah,...I told myself,...this has got to be a joke. What the hell would Mr. Kershaw be doing on a boat between Finland & Sweden. Lissuhubby, in the meantime, decided that he would arrange a surprise trip for me. Then, rats to it,...I Caught a cold. Dammit. But we made it to the boat anyway, and with several hot rum toddies inside it, I made it into the big bar on the boat. And it really was Nik & his band playing. The show was excellent, as was the music! Nik and the band were having a quiet warm up for their bigger tour dates, and playing smaller venues, they said, so they could all get back into playing live without any major stress (several band members were from the original line ups used in the 80's,..) We nattered to the crew during the concert, and after the show, myself, hubby and three fans from Sweden were invited back stage, and next thing we knew, we were having a bevy with the gang, chatting with the star himself, and Nik & the band had me calling up the UK on my mobile to get the football scores,..(damn,..what is my phone bill going to be like!) a grand time was had by all, and I achieved a life time ambition,..I got my copy of Human Racing, (had it since nineteen eighty dot) signed! Also, I got lots of great advice from Niks manager for my own musical endeavors. I did ask Nik the traditional Dolby question (he'd been on the phone to him last a few years ago,...and has met him) and I also asked him if he knew anyone form The Fixx (another of my faves) as they used to be on the same record label,...Nik nattered on about the Fixx at length,...he knew their keyboard player quite well, and it was wonderful hearing a bit more about the 80's music scene. By all accounts thought, being a pop idol took it's toll on the poor guy,....sounds like the prospect of screaming girls scared the merry hell out of him, and made it more difficult to get his music accepted on his own merit. After that, I slept 16 hours, and I have to say, I'm still feeling shitty,...but it was worth it,... and one tip,..Mr Kershaw has a new album coming out soon & will be touring soon,...check it out, because his new material was great, and this guy has not lost his edge or voice at all! Oh,....and I couldn't resist it,..I did ask him where his huge 80's quiff had gone (he has short hair now),..."it's at home," he said "in it's cage!" Well,..better stop now,...back to work and reality! bye for now! 80's-saturated Lissu :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 08:25:47 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Drawn in like a moth In a message dated 2/11/99 11:53:29 PM Eastern Standard Time, weasel@gothic.net writes: << I am not really a musician. Woohoo! I'm so glad you joined our little family! It's Mary here, aka Europa, and Stephen and I are very pleased that you followed up on our recommendation. I, too, have always had "Flying North" in my head at airports but at that time, the version of "Europa" Stephen and I were sharing was that performed by one of our much beloved members of Alloy, Ian Gifford, which we find very charming. Perhaps this will goad my better half into saying a few words about "The Flattery Earth" but he's got much catching up to do since we were in Beth's old stomping ground for longer than we thought. Melissa, the reason why I've been silent is that we traveled to Atlanta for me to have surgery which, though it had a complication which caused me (and Stephen too because he had to see me suffer) much anguish, will hopefully improve my quality of life immensely. And though I've spent most of my life in snowy climes, I've never heard the expression "plowheave". I like it though! I'll quit rambling here since I sense that the pain medication is interfering with my editorial capacities but I really wanted to say a big hello to Darren and to welcome the other new folks who joined while I was otherwise occupied. Befoggedly yours, Europa P.S. Melissa, I'm trying to find it in my heart to forgive you for putting the damn Styx song in my head the other day, especially since these days it seems I have too much time on my hands! P.P.S. The plane was a 20 seat commuter and I had the very back seat which was a bench that went all the way across the back. It was a night flight and there was a tremendous thunderstorm outside. These flights are typically bumpy due to the mountain updrafts, but this night the storm made it even more so. So, what do I do while this plane is being thrown around with lightning flashing outside? I put on my headphones and listen to the soundtrack album to the film "The Hunger" which happened to be in my walkman. If you aren't familiar with the soundtrack, it is very scary electronic music interspersed with some classical bits. Thanks to the internet, you can sample what I'm talking about here: http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=33543056/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/albu m.html/ArtistID=FRN-HUNGER+(SOUNDTRACK)/ddcn=SD-3020+47261+2 I sat there, in the back of the plane, both arms stretched out touching the sides of the plane holding me in place, with an evil grin as I watched the heads of the rest of the passengers bob in synch as the plane tossed about. (listen to track 2 above) The music and lightning accentuated the feeling but rather than being scared, I just felt like I was on some strange attraction. It was a 1 hour thrill ride that will be difficult to top. - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Friday, February 12, 1999 3:52 PM Subject: Re: Alloy: Drawn in like a moth > >In a message dated 2/12/99 12:43:33 PM Eastern Standard Time, >Kathleen.McClelland@online.disney.com writes: > ><< I like it when your on the plane in the sky, you have a seat on the wing >and the > plane hits air disturbances and you feel all of it.
