HI alloyites! I don't have words to thank you all for all the advice and kind words I've been receiving,...but now have to show exactly how naive I am,....does anyone here know how one goes about copyrighting songs? Stupidly, and trustingly, I thought I would leave that until I had a contract someday,...and that people I do and have worked with wouldn't make untrue claims,..... now I'm getting a nasty wake-up call I suppose,...let's hope I'll be able to put it down to experience. It just hurts when I know this is a total bull**** claim in the first place,...the guy doesn't even have any structured chord progressions in his own work, let alone know how to write them for a song (he makes quite nice, but very unstructured progressive house music) Is copyrighting something I can just go to a lawyer and get it done,....? Would I be better off just going to a big record company to deal with my songs? Help me if you can (won't you please,...)! (copyright Lennon& McCartney,...credit where credit's due,...! LOL!) Thanks, Lissu P.S. Slarv, thanks for the offer,...you'll have to line up behind Max, my bud Keijo and my Dad, but hey, the more the merrier ! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------- Louise Ulfstedt DTP Specialist Teleste Access Systems http://www.teleste.com louise.ulfstedt@teleste.fi ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 17:51:29 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Re: Alloy: Any musical advice? >>I was just wondering if those of you with musical connections have any >>advice to offer me? >> > >Dog damn it. This faq suggests talking to a copyright attorney to understand all the nuances of the law - - I would imagine that a good entertainment lawyer would have this knowledge. Take a trip on the internet and find out what office handles copyrights for Finland (or UK? or wherever you'd want this done) - here it's the Register of Copyrights at the Library of Congress and give them a call. I hope you can get this situation worked out. I know what this feels like. I wrote a honors thesis on dissident writers in Soviet Union - did an analysis of legal codes and the USSR constitution and, playing devil's advocate, took the position that the Soviet gov't was in the right in their handling of the two dissidents in question. One of the professors on my thesis committee proceeded to "borrow" my work and presented it in a lecture I happened to attend! Now, that takes some pretty big cojones. I was really intimidated initially, since I was only an undergraduate student, just barely in my twenties. I went and talked to the head of the department, who, at first, didn't believe me, but finally agreed to interview students who'd attended the class. Sure enough, he found out that I wasn't kidding. He confronted the professor (a visiting academic from a large university) and she just said, "Yeah. So what?" She figured, since I was just a lowly undergrad, it didn't matter. She lost her job. And I didn't feel sorry for her. A couple of years later, when I was in Moscow at the embassy, I ran into her -- she was leading a tour group. She was very icy to me and said she'd been unable to get a new academic job after this episode. I still did not feel sorry for her. She was an unrepentant thief. Never once did she apologize for stealing my intellectual property. Cow. Good karma, bad karma, Lissu. I'm directing lots of good karma toward you. You can guess where the bad karma's going. I think it's a hoot, too. I also like "city cams". There's one in Moline (my hometown) that looks over the Mississippi River and the docks for the gambling boats. I tune in occasionally to see the paddlewheelers cruising the river. When I get a bit nostalgic for Moscow, I go to a site that has a camera mounted up on the highest point in town (right by Moscow University and the olympic ski jump). I like to watch the sun rise and set over the city. Very pretty. I just went to Peter's site. I'm listening to the Raiders of the Lost Ark soundtrack, and the eerie music from the "Map Room" sequence was playing, building and building, more and more ominous, with that kinda creepy "aah-ahh" chorus in the background, as the images formed in Peter's office and kitchen. That really got me laughing - I kept wondering what was going to appear as the music came to a climax. Alas, it was an empty office and an empty (but spacious!) kitchen. You know, that chick who runs the JennieCam site now lives here in DC. I'm trying to imagine what I'd say to her if I ran into her on the street... "Oh hey! I've seen you naked on the Internet!" Bet that wouldn't be the first time she's heard that... I wonder if her site has been good or bad for her business. Taking no bets on that one here in Intern-ville, Melissa - -- Melissa R.
