My Universes Are Colliding! Okay, I should be sleeping, but I'm such a geek, I had to read the issue of "Star Wars Insider" I got at this Smithsonian shindig last week. There's this article on "Bantha Tracks", which was the first official newsletter of the Star Wars fan club waaay back when dinosaurs ruled the earth and I was just out of grade school. At some point, I finally left the fan club - don't remember why - and, so, didn't get any more issues of said newsletter. Well, I'm reading along and what do they mention? AN INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS DOLBY!!! Too weird! They call Our Fearless Leader "proto-techno keyboardist Thomas Dolby". The interview coincided with the release of "Howard the Duck" (hence the Star Wars to Lucasfilm to Dolby connection.) Never in my wildest dreams would geek-girl here imagine opening up Star Wars Insider to find a Dolby reference. ...you know, the Star Wars movies has its share of funky musicians (just look at the Cantina Band - I still whistle their "b-side" number) - couldn't you see Thomas decked out in trippy gear, just hangin' out in the background of a Star Wars scene, playing whatever passes for keyboards in some great "used universe" spaceport lounge? My world is, apparently, a very, very small one. Hulk tired, need sleep. Cheers, Melissa - -- Melissa R. I spent it doing laundry (it's so hard to get the washer in this building) and preparing my 7 layer taco dip for the Superbowl party I'm going to tomorrow. Hey, how did the Smithsonian Star Wars thing go? What was the big "secret presentation". And again, what was the Star Wars thing you were talking about in Denver? I'm curious. Later, Keith (can't wait for the bowl, 1. - I'm excited about watching it, 2. - the hype here has been so over done I'm ready for it to end) Stansell Denver (Go Broncos!) I have to go out for a few things momentarily to feed the one person who is coming over to see what atrocious things Cher will do to the national anthem. Why in god's name do they need 300 dancers to do some pseudo-Love Boat pre-game dance number - followed by Kiss (!?!?!) and 600 (!?!?!) dancers, moving to "I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night." Welcome to my country, non-US folks. The land of bizarre excess. Keith, I'd say the Broncos have won the pre-bowl game day psych-out. Nothing like having a key player on the other team - a bible-spouting guy teammates call The Prophet - picked up for solicitation of prostitution the night before the Super Bowl, eh? (Handy hint: don't ask undercover cops for blow jobs the night before your most important work day of the year...) > Hey, how did the Smithsonian Star Wars thing go? What was the big "secret > presentation". Ah, turns out it was nothing. Well, not quite nothing, but not what we'd all hoped for (the 4-minute trailer for The Phantom Menace.) I had a great time - I won a grab bag that had this really cool book (Star Wars: From Screen Concept to Collectible) and an embroidered shirt from Lucasfilm. Food was great. Company was fun. There was a guy there in a FANTASTIC Boba Fett costume - took him two years to make it. Dang - I wouldn't have the attention span to handle that one. > And again, what was the Star Wars thing you were talking about in Denver? > I'm curious. It's the Star Wars Celebration. Only the second Lucasfilm-approved Star Wars gathering ever. Uncle George may come. The martial artist who's playing Darth Maul will be there to do demonstrations of his handicraft. Tech people, actors, writers, and tons of fans will be descending upon Denver for 3 days of Star Wars fever. They'll have tons of models, props, and costumes never before displayed, including full-size ships used in the films. What a hoot. I really think I must fly out for this, job or no job. It's like a pilgrimage. Enjoy the game, Keith! Cheers, Melissa - -- Melissa R. Glad to hear someone else has similar experiences in synchronicity (I think this would fall under that heading) Jung's paper on synchronicity is one that I think you'd like, Melissa.. one of my favorite stories in his paper is of the woman in Germany who brought film to be developed, on which there was a photo of her young son.. however she ended up not picking it up because the war began. Then, about ten years later, she again brought film to be developed & when she got the photos back, what should she see but a double exposure of her recent photo, over the photo she'd taken a decade before of her son! Somehow the film had fallen back into circulation after the war started & she was the one who eventually bought the exact same roll of film she'd originally dropped off. Too weird!!
