Hi Paul - sorry to hear about your recent losses - but remember, insurance claims can be wonderful things. The guy who's going to be playing keyboards in my new band was once driving down the M1, when fire started coming through the bonnet of his car into the passenger compartment. Given that the car wouldn't be worth much to resell, he calmly steered onto the hard-shoulder, took a grandstand seat on the embankment, and watched as it burnt itself into a write-off. With the insurance money he bought a fabulous keyboard! Another guy who I worked with, and briefly sang with, in Birmingham, had his entire CD collection stolen from his house (including my Blur orange album). I'd been borrowing his wonderful Del Amitri album, but he claimed for the amount anyway, and bought himself (yuck!) the Catatonia album instead. (Any Americans who haven't heard of this repulsive talentless outfit yet - I envy you). So you see this could be a great opportunity to indulge in all the things you've been meaning to get around to for a while!! Good luck with it! the_copse ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 12:43:59 -0500 From: MacSuirtain Subject: Alloy: Bad Karma and An Embarrassment of Riches Well, folks, some of you know my stories of postal woes. There is a semi psychotic postal worker in my neighborhood, and he has targeted me for repeated postal abuse. Sometimes, mail I send doesn't reach its destination for months and months - sometimes never. Often, mail reaches me munched up, late, or gets sent back (a birthday gift last year was returned to a college friend, marked "address unknown".) About 30 minutes ago, a car pulled up in front of my building. An unfamiliar guy in postal gear got out, carrying a big plastic bag. He knocked on my door and introduced himself. It was the Bethesda post master, with whom I've spoken on the phone several times because of the weirdness with my mail. He came bearing apologies; the bag, wet, mushy, mutilated, contained my Christmas cards. 63 hand-stamped, embossed, calligraphy-addressed cards I crafted for friends and family across the planet. I lost it. I was furious. The post master kept apologizing and apologizing, and I kept pointing out how many times I called and written to complain about this guy. This morning, the post master explained, Crazy Letter Carrier had been fired upon discovery of this mess. FINALLY!!!! He'll be brought up on mail tampering charges. That's a federal offense. I have to catalogue all my time and $$ put into the cards (I gave the post master a copy of my business card, so he knows I make handicrafts for money, hence I can be recompensed for my time.) That doesn't, of course, make up for all the love that went into these, but it will have to do. So, to those who were expecting a card from me, my apologies. Guess I'll try again this year. Sigh. I just hope that Crazy Letter Carrier gets charged and imprisoned (or at least placed in a soft-walled room) before he comes looking for some revenge. On a happier note, thanks to Beth and Keith for the very kind offers of a place to stay in Denver. Wow! You both beat out "Manic Depressive Richard," the guy in Denver who keeps calling me (I was a friend of his ex-wife, back in Moscow - she ran away a few years ago to become the mistress of a writer in St. Petersburg - and he calls once a month to let me know he still can't get a date...) I'll let you know if my trip gels - I'd love to see you guys! Off to deposit the remains of my Christmas cards in the trash room... - -- Melissa - -- Melissa R. Anyway, I guess the first time I heard TMDR was in '82 or '83. This was at the peak of MTV I think. But, I didn't have cable. There was a syndicated show called MV3 (get it?) that was sort of a cross between MTV and American Bandstand. My sister used to watch this, and they started playing She Blinded Me With Science a lot. Then, Thomas made a couple of "live" appearences on the show. He talked about the idea of the EP, which was new at the time. A short while later, a local TV station played the Live Wireless video one Saturday night at midnight after Saturday Night Live. I thought, hey, that's the guy who does that song, so I recorded the show. I started watching the tape, and quickly got hooked. I think I watched that tape everyday for year, I liked it so much. Saddly, the tape was recorded over by my sister some time later. If anyone knows a source for it, please let me know.
