Yesterday i received a copy of Keyboard which I won at eBay, the May '88 issue. I've never read this interview before & even though I wouldn't know my Roland MKS-20 from my Alesis Midifex, this interview provides such great insight into the construction of Aliens Ate my Buick, and song composition in general. I loved Thomas' reasons for hiring Mike Kapitan (aside from being a great musician, he looks like the keyboard player from the Muppets :) A definite plus! I was really amused when reading this interview to hear Thomas say (about 'Aliens'), "Some people who have known my stuff from the beginning find it a little bit hard to stomach. They think it's a bit brash. It's certainly unsubtle in a lot of ways. It goes for the jugular." I never found it hard to stomach personally but I WAS disoriented by it at first, the horns were so hard & bright, not like anything I'd heard a lot of before, and the relentless slap-bass which stood out so clearly from everything else, even from the brass..! Very unusual. I love this album, however even to this day i still have to brace myself before listening to it, because I know I'm in for something that isn't going to quit until it's through with me! oh, and Dolby's line about this album being 'unsubtle in a lot of ways' has my vote as the understatement of the millennium. You have no idea, it's been nagging at me that I still can't watch the Hot Sauce video so I've taken up a sort of Hot Sauce therapy session for myself where if I can listen to the song all the way through without covering my face with both hands, blushing from head to toe, or dissolving into fits of laughter at the sheer hilarious outrageousness of it all, then I will be ready to see the video (but I haven't succeeded yet!) A really fine interview overall. Including, I might add, a photo of him wearing a pretty lizard pin on his lapel (I know it was really trendy at the time of this interview to wear those big jewelled lizard pins!) I love lizards :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 18:01:22 -0800 From: Kathleen Truelove Subject: Re: Alloy: '88 Keyboard magazine article! Robin, You are soooo funny. I usually try to quiet them.Not. They don't know all the words and don't have a clue as to what the song is really about. It's too funny listening to them. Oh well, give my oldest a few years and he'll be getting a clue or two. Anyway, gotta go home and make some dinner. I drank beers with Boz and the other members of the Morrissey band (minus Morrissey and Spencer Cobrin) after a show in October 1992 in Salt Lake. I happened to be in the downstairs bar of a club I liked when the band came in along with a DJ I knew from a Salt Lake radio station. The opening band Gallon Drunk was also there. Even though I saw the concert, I wasn't sure who was in Morrissey's band and who was Gallon Drunk. I kind of figured it out when I heard some of the guys mention they were staying at Motel 6 (Gallon Drunk). One funny moment was when Alain Whyte, Boz, Gary Day, myself and a few other people were in a small room in the bar where the band was sitting on a couch. One of the guys took his shoes and then socks off and threw them at one of the other members of the band (I can't remember who was who at the time). The recipient of the socks said "Hey,there are a people outside of our hotel who'd pay a lot for these socks!" Anyway, before the night was over, I got Alain Whyte's autograph and got a high-five from Gary Day because he thought he offended me by saying something about my Big Audio Dynamite T-shirt. (I wasn't offended). Anyway, the point is, those guys were really cool. It wasn't until a few weeks later when I saw them on Saturday Night Live that I really knew who I was drinking beers with. Tell Boz I said Hi (as if he'd remember me). I'm not 100% sure he was there It may have been Spencer Cobrin instead. - -Keith Stansell Denver (Go Broncos) Colorado - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 1999 6:13 AM Subject: RE: Alloy: Amazing thing > >Gosh - I don't know, I'm going to write back to him today, and then >probably go and see him next week when I've been paid. I had my place broken into once, nothing got taken though. I guess they looked around and said, "Yeeesh! What a load of crap, we should leave 20 bucks for this poor shmoe." But then I found out from a friend that his place had the same thing happen. It's a more organized type of criminal. They break in, take an inventory of what you've got, then find buyers, and if they find enough buyers to make it worth their while they come back later and clean you out. Fortunately for me they never came back. Unfortunately for my friend they did and he lost his entire guitar collection. Of course I've engraved everything of value in a very visable location so that might have helped out a bit too. Remember this list goes around the world & into many households. You wouldn't want to risk being misinterpreted. I believe it wouldn't be Thomas' style at all to make the statement which you propose, so I will have to differ with you here. I have taken this song as a sexual fantasy-based story (and so much of the rich Mexican culture is present in Southern California, I imagine this may have been what lends its spirit to this song) but certainly not as a statement on anyone's culture or a generalization about women. Indeed, do please come visit us! Along with the Star Wars Celebration, you could meet most or all of us at the legendary Wynkoop-ee, the virtual birthplace of the TMDR Song Parody Contest from a couple of years ago. And you would be more than welcome to stay in our guest room, which should be very comfy and might even have drapes by then :-) Of course, given that you would be sleeping (or attempting to do so) down the hall from a three-month-old, you might find sleeping in Keith's bed to be more appealing...
