I've never done this intentionally,..(unless my subconcious was playing tricks from my school music lesson memories), but now I've come to ponder it,...I've used some simple palindromes (if you can still call them that) within musical phrases without thinking about it, especially in the folk music I used to write whilst being with my parents folk band. I think it's something of a natural progression in music to "retrace your steps", especially if you write accompaniments, harmonies....but I've never conciously used structural techniques,..and never sat down and written a piece of music by applying a complex structural pattern. For me, music comes from emotion, and these would be too rigid a format for me,...that's why I love the work of people like Jeff Buckley, who let his music "wander" more. Perhaps these techniques used in Haydn's day were born out of simple natural musical instinct, and crystallised into something more elaborate thanks to man's obsession with symmetry & a fashion for some musical formula? Who knows? Damn, that's deep for before 10am! Something strange is going on here,...LOL! Well,...that's my 10-penneth worth,.... They're just brine shrimp - and, man, if you don't keep their little plastic world clean, does it ever get gross and cloudy real fast! I never had any sea monkeys myself, but many friends in college did. At one point, I lived in the Russian House along with this incredibly tall, incredibly stoned guy named Bailey. Bailey seemed to spend most of his time hallucinating. One evening, I walked into the kitchen to see Bailey sucking down a big bowl of pasta. There were two empty chicken ramen noodle packets and, rather suspiciously, an empty sea monkey environment. I knew his roommate had some of the "royalty of the sea", and I got worried. Yes, kids, sadly, Bailey had decided to see what "sea monkey ramen" tasted like. His roommate nearly killed him. As I recall, Bailey spent the next week sleeping in the hallway... A friend that I made in college would play Dolby for me. I had to go and buy "Astronauts & Heretics" for myself and been hooked ever since. I don't know if I've seen them or not, I might have. There is a really interesting deck of 'medicine' cards based on a Native American motif, not really tarot, but it is said to help you find your animal totems/spirit guides. These cards are gorgeous! A friend lent me her set last year for a few weeks & I want my own set some day. You might like them, Kate. Dave is playing Tomb Raider, what a fantastic game! During the instructional part of where Lara shows you her home & tells you how the controls work, I could swear her voice is being acted by the same girl who did 'Saffy' in Absolutely Fabulous! Does anyone know, is it her? When Lara hits her head or runs into a wall, I just picture it as Saffy because of the vocal effects & I feel guilty! Robin T Is there a version where Lara has a can of Guinness Draft & takes swigs in between moves? She needs this! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 21:53:42 -0800 (PST) From: Elaine Linstruth Subject: Alloy: Another List I joined another mailing list recently, which I fear I'll have to unsubscribe because they are being so ANAL.. RETENTIVE.. about keeping the subject ON TOPIC. A performer who hasn't done anything new in many years. It's really stupid. Anyway someone, in an off-topic moment, let us in on the following URL: http://www.van-halen.com/5150_preview.html Evidently Eddie has designed a special Wolfgang edition guitar, and a special small one for his son.. and there is a picture there, among other things. In fact, I found the whole van-halen.com website to be quite better constructed than a lot of others that I'd expected more from. While mostly off topic, at least there's a TMDR-Van Halen connection. And at least I know you guys won't stone me to death.
