Hi, Keith (and everybody) >I don't know if you are much of a fan of (American) football, but I must >ask, since you are an Atlanta to Denver transplant - who will you be >cheering for in the Superbowl? Well, I actually have never been much of a football fan, but that doesn't keep me from being in a total state of shock at the moment. To give you a little background -- I was born in Atlanta 34 years ago. Thirty-three years ago, Atlanta acquired a football team in the Falcons, who have been their team that entire time. And for that entire time, until this season, they absolutely SUCKED. We're talking bottom of the league, pretty consistently. Along with every other sports team in Atlanta, until 1991, when the city's baseball team suddenly went from last place in the league to the World Series. And the entire city proceeded to go completely bananas, as all the success-deprived sports fans got their first taste of glory. We're talking dancing in the streets, people leaving work and taking their kids out of school to pack the streets for the parade, etc. Now it's happening again -- check out this quote from an Atlanta online newspaper: "When Morten Andersen's overtime field goal sailed through the uprights Sunday, it propelled the Falcons to the Super Bowl for the first time. It also set off a wild celebration that had metro Atlanta partying well into the night....Fans spilled out of sports bars and danced on Peachtree Street, closing some blocks to traffic. Drivers honked their horns. People grinned and laughed and high-fived. What else do you do when the unthinkable happens?" Personally, Mark and I are taking it as a sign of the apocalypse. However, to return to Keith's question -- who to cheer for, the old hometown or the new hometown? In our time here in Denver, we've also developed a certain affection for Denver Broncos, which is clearly an awesome team. So basically, we'll be happy whoever wins, and will probably cheer whenever either team does something good during the game. Which means that we'll be very confusing people to have at a Super Bowl party. Of course, this also means that this will be the first year that I have any interest whatsoever in the game, other than for the commercials....;-) Cheers, Beth Beth Meyer bethmeyer@mindspring.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 23:51:55 -0800 (PST) From: T_Dolby@webtv.net (Thomas Dolby Robertson) Subject: Alloy: www.tdolby.com ........is now back online! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 09:19:56 -0800 From: Kathleen Truelove Subject: Re: Alloy: Hallo again! Alexander, The group you described with bagpipes and guitars sounds like the group 'Brother'. Brother is okay, yet I prefer the 'Wicked Tinkers' over 'Brother'. The 'Wicked Tinkers' play with only drums and bagpipes. They really, really rock. When you listen to them, it's all you can do to keep from getting up and dancing a jig. Some other ones are 'The Chieftans', 'The Pogues' and 'Capercaille'. If I had a wave file of any of these bands, I'd send it to ya. Good luck with your girlfriend. Maybe you can get her a celtic style engagement ring instead of just a diamond ring. Pax Aye, Kate;) dalexander@juno.com wrote: > Hello all! Sorry I've been away for so long.
