Brown" Subject: Alloy: Obs(idian) and Ends Hi Alloyed, I've been meaning to write to say a few words about the computer game Obsidian which contains music written by our Founder. I'm not one to play these things as a rule but this particular one had a lot of aspects I found appealing, even beyond having some Dolby work. Much of it called to mind Alloy members which I found especially entertaining. The character that one plays is a female scientist with a PhD (hmm, think I could relate to that?) named Leila. She reminds me of our own dear Beth with her body build, hairstyle, and love of the outdoors. Her field of expertise is similar to that of Barbara's (are you out there, B?) so I thought of her as well. Part of the game involves maneuvering through a series of bureaucratic roadblocks which brought to mind what Slarvi does for a living. The puzzles were quite challenging and though Stephen was the one to figure out many of them, one was a chemistry problem which allowed me to use my skills. There was a lot of humor in it, including a sly joke about Myst. I recommend it for those who prefer mental challenges to blowing up aliens. I don't know if it's still available in stores but we got our copy on the recent resource for Dolby-related material, eBay. I'd also like to extend a belated but still very warm welcome to our newbies. The people of Alloy are quite wonderful and I am proud to call many of them my friends. Which reminds me, there have been many messages I've meant to comment on so I'll briefly do that now. Melissa, no way could someone as lovely as you be considered the resident troll! I think that's *my* title... Slarvi, your accidental typos have given me a much needed chuckle these days, what with us having to "sing" in for the FES site and the fact that you didn't take "paino" lessons. I can't believe CRACKERS let that one slide. BC, it was lovely to see you last weekend. Let's not let as much time go by before we get together again, okay? Lee, I'm really glad to hear you're doing better. You've been on my mind a lot lately since I, too, am having surgery next month. I'm not as brave or nonchalant about it as you are since even though I've had surgeries for this problem in the past (Beth, anytime you want to watch the videos, come on by! You'll probably find yourself humming "Turning Japanese" just as I do when I view them), this time things are going to be more extensive and I have to travel halfway around the country to get it done. Wish me luck everyone, please! With a wish for much happiness in this new year, Europa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 11:11:44 -0500 From: "Lucinda L. Any help would be appreciated. Every once in a while a copy shows up for auction on eBay. Also, put feelers out on the eBay wanted board -- I've had marvelous luck with folks there either directing me to things or digging them up for me from their collections. It's constantly changing based on whatever people come there to auction.. so you never know what you'll find. Good luck (and welcome!!) I made up my mind several weeks ago to get a Fishman transducer for my cello (alas, I can only afford a crappy one.. a nice one is way too expensive. The cellos I make are way out of my own price range, go figure! So i bought an ultracrappy $200 cello & will ELECTRIFY it, and add effects pedals as I go along) And I thought that was to be my big brush with modern technology.. til Dave and I started talking a bit this evening... and we have decided to get a live cam for our computer after we are relocated! 'StudioCam', which will show the inner workings of the artist's studio, as well as the violin maker in her natural habitat. It will probably be incredibly boring for viewers, but at least I won't feel so 'alone' all day working in my little business all by myself..! I can do little puppet shows too, it will be so much fun :) !!! I've always wanted to do Merchant of Venice in sock puppets. First of all, may I point out how delightful it is to see you on the list again. And thanks for the Obsidian description -- it does sound interesting indeed. >The character that one plays is a female scientist with >a PhD (hmm, think I could relate to that?) named Leila. She reminds >me of our own dear Beth with her body build, hairstyle, and love of >the outdoors. Ummm...presumably my body build from about eight months ago, not the current version. Though a female scientist who is about eight months pregnant could make for an interesting video game character. (Let's see...Level 1: Race against the clock to complete an experimental session before you have to run to the bathroom again! Level 2: Set up a bunch of heavy lab equipment without giving yourself hemorrhoids in the process! Level 3: Try to discuss your data with a straight face while your abdomen is shifting around entirely of its own accord!) >Melissa, no way could someone as lovely as you be considered the >resident troll! I think that's *my* title... Please, please -- no more arguing over the title "Resident Troll," there are no trolls here! Of course, what comes to my mind when you say "troll" is the variety that I would call the "Boulder Troll" -- a skinny white guy in his early twenties with dreadlocks down to his waist, various tattoos and/or pierced body parts, who apparently hasn't bathed in at least a month, and who divides his time between panhandling in town and camping out on the front yards of people who live in the mountains. Can be found underneath the occasional bridge over Boulder Creek. Any other regional troll variants we should watch out for? >I, too, am having surgery next month. >I'm not as brave or nonchalant about it as you are since even >though I've had surgeries for this problem in the past (Beth, anytime >you want to watch the videos, come on by! Whenever we're in the mood for some really intimate video, we can always pop in the latest ultrasound of the little one and play "Guess the Body Part" ("Hey, there's the nose...no, wait, it's a foot...")
