You really need to know how to mapread & a map with a quadrilateral scale is a must - the 100 000 IGN maps in France of which I have loads are no use, the 50,000 scale is mandatory. I programmed in the route to the UK over the Christmas & was amazed to find that I'd programmed the location to my Mothers' house to within 40 metres ! It made the journey back home a bit more interesting, but strangely enough it doesn't work in the Channel Tunnel, so there's a fifty km 'hole' in the route home. Rumour is that the US military are going to scrap the built-in "randomisation" factor which causes your position to jump about, so the thing will be pile-poil accurate. Other than that, I was amazed about the lack of response from the techno-weenies of Alloy about GPS. Perhaps following my little tantrum in November everyone agreed behind my back to ignore my mails. Whatever. Anyway, wishing everyone on the list a very Happy New Year, whether you celebrate it or not, happiness & good fortune to all. The fact that it's going to that label is mainly thanks to the chap I'm working with (I think I'm supposed to call him a producer, but he doesn't look like a producer,..more like a student/DJ,...nice lad,...) who is already signed to the label. I am too curious,...what on earth is GPS??!! >It sounds like some facinating navigation system,....do tell, Hello Louise.. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, and is a system of navigation by satellite, run by our dear friends the US military. Basically, for users it consists of a receiver the size of a GSM telephone, which can receive the signals from the satellites. I'm crap at maths, but if you are on a globe and can receive signals from three satellites above, apparently you can determine your position on the surface of that globe. That's how it works. In addition to telling you exactly where you are on the globe, you can program into it the coordinates of where you want to go to, & it will tell you which direction to take & how far. It can also tell you which direction you are travelling in, how fast you are going, your average speed, maximum speed, altitude, much the same as a bike computer, but handy for walking, skiing, boating, horse riding or whatever. It draws a pretty picture of the route you have taken, and works anywhere in the world, but not indoors. It works in the car and trains too. You can even hook it up to your computer so that you can program it more easily. It has been programmed with virtually every type of map system in the world, and you can enter coordinates in either latitude & longtitude or OS coords or whatever. It works in miles, kilometres & nautical miles too. They cost about 200 quid, but are worth it. They are incredibly accurate, to within 5 metres (I've tested mine to 14,8 metres), but would be more accurate if it was not for a random error margin built in to the system by the US military, which changes your exact position by up to 40 metres. Presumably this is to stop would-be terrrorists incorporating one into a guided missile system in order to launch a missile at someone. But there is a rumour that the US are going to ditch the error factor system & we'll have 100% accuracy. - --IMA.Boundary.0795455190 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; name="RFC822 message headers" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: cc:Mail note part Content-Disposition: inline; filename="RFC822 message headers" Received: from ns2.baxter.com ([159.198.1.38]) by ccmailgw.mcgawpark.baxter.com with SMTP (IMA Internet Exchange 3.11) id 0005C054; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 04:54:15 -0600 Received: from siren.shore.net (siren.shore.net [207.244.124.5]) by ns2.baxter.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id EAA09448 for ; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 04:53:22 -0600 (CST) Received: from smoe.org [204.167.97.154] by siren.shore.net with esmtp (Exim) id 0zxU4B-0002l3-00; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 05:50:28 -0500 Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) with SMTP id FAA09095; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 05:49:30 -0500 (EST) Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.10); Tue, 5 Jan 1999 05:49:27 -0500 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id FAA09081 for alloy-outgoing; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 05:48:58 -0500 (EST) Received: from teleste.fi (root@teleste.fi [212.213.16.8]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id FAA09077 for ; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 05:48:54 -0500 (EST) Received: from obelix.teleste.fi ([212.213.16.9]:27148 "EHLO obelix.teleste.fi" ident: "NO-IDENT-SERVICE[2]") by teleste.fi with ESMTP id <291197-25573>; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 14:01:56 +0200 Received: by obelix.teleste.fi with Internet Mail Service (5.5.1960.3) id ; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 12:44:08 +0200 Message-ID: <514B833CB5E4D1118E320008C724B24B03FE80@obelix.teleste.fi> From: "Ulfstedt, Louise" To: "'alloy@smoe.org'" Subject: RE: Re[2]: Alloy: What did Santa bring you? Hi, folks; Thanks, John, for the info on your new GPS system! I do hope that the random error thing does indeed get scrapped -- from what I've read about the system recently, this "security" measure is one of those fairly pointless things that makes life inconvenient for everybody but wouldn't do much to stop a really determined terrorist. Oh, well... >Other than that, I was amazed about the lack of response from the >techno-weenies of Alloy about GPS. Perhaps following my little tantrum >in November everyone agreed behind my back to ignore my mails. Just to reassure you, I *seriously* doubt that this was the case -- certainly wasn't on my end! From what I know of the Alloy techno-weenies, most of them are expert in general-purpose or business computing, sprinkled with a few in areas like sound engineering and video game design. None of which has anything to do with GPS. And there are so many nifty new technological toys out there that you may be the first one on the list to try that particular one. So I suspect that, rather than burdening the list with a set of "I dunno" responses, everyone pretty much waited for someone expert in the area to speak up. Maybe that expert will turn up here someday :-) Cheers, Beth (confirmed weenie, though only moderately techno) Beth Meyer bethmeyer@mindspring.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 15:18:11 +0000 From: Tim_Dunn.JBA_HEATHROW.SPL_EXTERNAL@jba.co.uk Subject: RE: Alloy: Still here Well it certainly wasn't me - I was unsubscribed for the holiday, but am now back at what they laughably call 'work'.
