I think Brian saying he destroyed the tapes was just a way for him to get out of completing it or talking about it because it was such a painful place for him to go mentally. The bootlegs that have come out have been quite comprehensive and it's certainly possible to piece together a 60's equivalent of the Brian Wilson Smile CD that came out a few years ago. The main one that he claimed to have destroyed was the Fire part of the Elements suite but even that exists on bootleg in multiple versions. I'm definitely looking forward to this coming out in proper sound. It's just amazing it's taken so many years and also amazing that the remaining members have put their litigous natures to one side and agreed on something.
