There's a place on Ryerson Avenue about six blocks from the Rivoli 
called the Alexandra Hotel that my wife and I stayed at a few years 
ago when our usual TO hotel was booked solid.  "Basic" is the correct 
word -- it's roughly as luxurious as my college dorm -- but it's also 
only about $80 a night, so on a trip where you're only using the hotel 
for sleeping and showering, you could do worse.
