Got my shill hat on here: The CRAFTMATIC ADJUSTABLES are SF East Bay Area band headed by Karl Jan Lubbe, a former member of the Flying Colors Retailing Brigade. Not Lame now has the new Craftmatics CD in stock, so I thought I'd pop in here and give you a link and heads-up to check this one out. Here's the link: http://www.notlame.com/AUGUST_-_New_CDs/THE_CRAFTMATIC_ADJUSTABLES/Page_2/CDCRAFTMATIC1.html Karl Jan Lubbe's two favorite songwriters are Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson, and this CD shows those influences in the humor and playfulness found in the songs. Stylistically, the closest "recommended if you like" comparison would be something along the lines of WEEN meets THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS. Among the 14 tracks on "Girl Talk" are three cover songs--- and I doubt seriously (or humorously) if anyone has previously covered these on a pop CD... the theme song from the Chuck Connors TV show "Branded", "The Greatest Adventure" from the animated 'Hobbit' and "Whale of a Tale" from '20,00 Leagues Under the Sea'. Hear and believe! That leaves 11 original songs--- and "Tiny Tear Lake" is a front-runner to make my year-end compilation disc. I'm not sure how to neatly categorize the music here--- there are sure elements of power pop with some crunch, some harmonies and some sticky sweet melodies, so I'll just urge to give it a listen and order it up from Bruce at Not Lame.
