Well, Amazon, among other online retailers, files Soundscan figures.

I forget how spoiled for choice I am here in Boston when it comes to 
record stores.  My wife and I walked to Harvard Square last weekend, 
and as we were walking through the square, I happened upon a really 
quite good record store that I had forgotten about.  Not that I had 
forgotten its name, or couldn't remember where exactly it was, I had 
forgotten that this store EXISTED!  When I can just plain forget the 
very existence of a perfectly good record store because you always go 
to one of the other four in the neighborhood (including Stereo Jack's, 
an outstanding place specializing in jazz and blues vinyl, and Twisted 
Village, my go-to place for psych and experimental music), I clearly 
am not fully appreciative of what I have.
