And there's a BIG difference between compression used in RECORDING instruments/voice and compression used in MASTERING. It's one thing to crunch a kick pedal to make it stand out alongside the other sections of a drum kit....it's a another beast altogether when the kick drum becomes as loud as everything else on the recording because the mastering engineer has compressed the hell out of the stereo mix to make the dynamics a moot point.
