I'm just a lowly listener - even Adam Clayton plays better bass than me ;-) - but I can't imagine 75% of all bass playing post-1970 doesn't owe some serious debt to him. And I'll second the mention of Tony Levin. Is there anyone that can even come closet to matching the breadth and quality of his work?
