Nice to see this thread started out with Elastica, but the other 
bassist (besides arguably Entwistle) who not only fronted his own 
band's sound but influenced scores of other important bands (at least 
in my line of work) --and an entire school of TV commercial 
soundtracks (again with posthumous help from The Ox) was JJ Burnel of 
the Stranglers.

The initial Messthetics compilations from Scotland and Wales are out 
around year's end, btw.
