I played guitar until 1985. Then Swedish Fish needed a bassist while theirs was off getting a PhD at school so I switched....and never turned back, really. That band was mostly Motown/Style Council driven at the time (not so much in their current incarnation). As bassist with my revised Moving Targetz after that I was a follower of the Dennis Dunaway school of bass playing. McCartney melodic but heavy on the accents. We had one guitarist, so my roll soon became one of Geddy Lee hole-filling. Later I joined a blues band for two years. They had the Skynyrd/Allman Brothers guitar wall of death going on so I learned how to un-play and hold down the 4/4 in the pocket with our meat-n-potatoes drummer. In the '90s came the cover bands and it was all over the map. I glad I had the different styles to tap into so I could grab funky, melodic or steady at will. Just to f*ck everyone up at IPO Toronto I played bass in three bands and electric guitar during my own set (and didn't join Swedish Fish for their set....the bassist they've got is a monster).
