I'm not sure Cohen is an "artist" anyone is *supposed* to like or even 
*get*. He just is. He's like this wise old sage who has wisdom but a very 
limited amount of actual talent (he was quite amused many years ago after 
winning a Juno Award for "vocalist of the year"). His influence on music has 
been his poetic approach to the adult genre which he neither over hypes or 
even promotes. It's amusing that others put more importance on what he does 
than he has for himself. People follow his every word and movement with 
reverence and he just shakes his head in disbelief.
